The only thing I didn't like about Loaded is that there is no crashy loud noise rock song. VU & Nico had European Son, WHWL had Sister Ray and VU had Murder Mystery
It's strange, this song has all the ingredients that I dislike about some American music. From the accentuated New York drawl to the twangy sixties guitar.......arghh. But then that blistering back beat, razor sharp guitar and bass bring it back. Fantastic!
Man, that guitar playing. You can hear similarities of upcoming lead guitarists like Robert Quine, Tom Verlaine, and James Williamson. And this was in 1970! I have no trouble agreeing on Lou Reed being one of the best guitarists ever. Just as influential as Hendrix.
@00Jackacid No, Lou Reed does most of the lead stuff, it was his band and he wrote most of the songs, and all that. Sterling Morrison often took lead in live performances. But the solo towards the end has Lou Reed written all over it. It's wild and manic like his solos in stuff from White Light/White Heat and other songs at that period.
@DrugStabbingTime his band? he was the principle songwriter but never a great guitarist. before cale left they used to trade off licks a la early stones but after cale left morrison became the lead guitarist with Reed playing strickly rythmn. another reason i know this is probably sterling is because Reed hated overdubs and liked to do everything live.
@00Jackacid Yes it's mostly 'his band' hence the reason people know him as "that guy from the V.U." or "Lou Reed & the Velvet Underground"
'Never a great guitarist' I disagree. His guitarwork in I Heard Her Call My Name and Run Run Run is some very visionary stuff. Most of the lead stuff is him man. He's a brilliant lead guitarist/soloist. Now that I think about it though I just remembered that Lou doesn't do the solo on this song so the ending of this song is definitely Sterling.
zep's rock and roll is a more powerful song but i love this one too more subtle is guess which one do u think will hold p better a hundred years from now?
TOTALLY!!! You can tell that the Strokes were clearly influenced by Velvet Underground especially Casablancas. He's actually said that Lou Reed had a major influence on his vocal style. They're both awesome bands and vocalists!
i grew up on velvet underground and lou reed, im not even from that time but they just have my groove. and whenever you are down, lonely, confused, angry, this stuff helps so much every time haha.
@ELEMENT1111100 so i smoke a iittle grass now and again big deal it's a hair span away from being legal. hell peopl have been doing it for centuries. at least im not getting hammered and plowing my car into a schoolbus full of kids. i like to get stoned and chill out or just chill out. so why is my life wasted? I could go to work come home go to bed get up the next day and have nothing in my life that excites me or fires me up. now that would be a wasted life.

@VULou91 Lou Reed has never been a vocalist that try's to "Hit notes" per-se.He more of just goes along and makes great amazing music. It's not that he can't hit supossed notes; it's just that he makes his music just go along in a flowing fashion, giving the listener as well as himself the "Feeling of I don't care".His music makes me just relax and put my worries behind. @hermygagala I've heard him actually sing one song, although I can't remember what it was - I think you're right that he just sort of goes along. I'd compare his singing style to Mark Knopfler's. Their _music_ is entirely different, but they both have that lassez faire singing style.

one of the best songs of all time. says so much with such a simple line - " Despite all the computations, you could just dance to a rock and roll station, and it was alright". Truly makes me believe that the Velvets were as good as, if not better than the Beatles and one day people will realise that.
'Despite all the amputations you know you could just go out, and dance to a rock and roll station, and it was alright.' One of my favourite lyrics ever.
Lou sings about himself here, just like so many of us,he was utterly saved when he discovered 'Rock'n'Roll'. This track is about all of us. It was(is) ALRIGHT!
She had the willies twitchin' to that spankin’, strappin’ pleasurableness, you know, her spunk was snatched from the jaws of death by Viagra and Crumpet, amen,

Bivalve tranny hairdos and double whammy Cadillac old crocks, well, you know, it ain't gonna lubricate me at the whole bang shoot, not just a girlish, snug straitjacket
Then one dribbling’ cockcrow she corkscrews on a New York underground railway, she doesn't swallow what she smells at the whole bang shoot
She had the willies twitchin' to that spankin’, strappin’ pleasurableness, you know, her spunk was snatched from the jaws of death by Viagra and Crumpet

@VincesVinyl this is a fine album indeed...with some timeless classics - but compared the earlier velvet/reed albums it seems lacking in originality...the musical influences (especially the stones and zappa) are very obvious on this record. but it's still better than anything produced in the last twenty years (at least)...

Jenny jabbered when she was just five days old, there was bugger all karaoke at the whole bang shoot
Every time she roots on the vibrations there was bugger all tobogganin’ at the whole bang shoot, not at the whole bang shoot
Then one dribbling’ cockcrow she roots on a New York underground railway, you know, she don't swallow what she smelled at the whole bang shoot

I think anyone that used to listen to rock music in his childhood (and probably still does) can relate to this song, it's one of my favourites.

Among the prettiest guitar solos ever! Lou makes his guitar sing with a beautiful voice here.

The way the riff kicks back in at 2:35 is one of the most sublime things ever.

@VincesVinyl It's actually 2:34

@VincesVinyl this is a fine album indeed...with some timeless classics - but compared the earlier velvet/reed albums it seems lacking in originality...the musical influences (especially the stones and zappa) are very obvious on this record. but it's still better than anything produced in the last twenty years (at least)...
uclrichard 1 year ago
@VincesVinyl agreed, the velvets are one of the greatest. i personaly say in the 60's #1 The Beatles, #2 The Velvet Underground
