  • I had the plush toy of My Pet Monster. And I loved both this and the cartoon. If kids of today love either Star Wars, Star Trek, Ghostbusters, Batman, Superman, Marvel Comics, G.I. Joe, Transformers, TMNT, and/or anything else that was popular during the 80s, THEY WOULD love My Pet Monster! Looking back at My Pet Monster, the Monster himself looks like a big rip-off of a Chuck-E-Cheese mascot or a giant Muppet from either Sesame Street or The Muppet Show. Bring this Live-Action flick to DVD!

  • thanks for the upload. you rock!@

  • I used to love this movie when I was 5 years old!

  • Oh, and in the books, the monster was a separate character. Neither Max nor anyone else turned into him.

  • A little different than the book. Max's sister's name is Annabelle and there is no older brother in the book. I'd say it's a good change though.

  • 3:00 and 3:29 good god even Urkel is not that clumsy!!!!

  • how old is this?

  • HOLY CRAP. I have had such a hard time finding info about this movie. I just know that I still think about it every time I hear Monster Mash, but I never remembered enough to formulate a semi-intelligent search for it. Thank you for posting it!!

  • yayyyy thanks for posting this!!!

  • Detective Murdoch and Loonette are so young!

  • 8:49 WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!? Nostalgia Critic

  • I loved this movie as a kid. Movies were so much better back then :)

  • I haven't seen this in years!!

  • is this cult classic? Why is max the monster but in cartoon he is not? Can anyone tell me other high top feature movies like a live action cabbage patch dolls i think + when they finished.

  • dammit, not it

  • holy shit, did i find it....the drink is lookign good...now all i need is wierd colored food tha makes people not see the monsters

  • ive seen another TI TOP video in 80s but forgot? Can anyone list any others.

  • The crack baby of where the wild things are!

  • OMG I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

  • I saw this movie when I was 4 or 5, and it scared the living shit out of me.

  • @SeventhEve wow nostalgia critic is right that is a scary ending for kids

  • yea i couldnt make it past the 3rd minute

  • OMG I was just a BABY when I saw this ><!!! I had the stuffed animal lol

  • to(tnp202) i was just watching that on tv and the monster doll is in the backround in adventures in babysitting in the bigining

  • Holy shot I still remembered the lines! I bet I watched this a hundred timed as a kid no joke

  • OMG, THIS WAS MY FAVORITE MOVIE next to adventures in babysitting!!!

  • OH MY LORD!! this is a total flashback from my childhood. i would watch this over and over again! major kudos!

  • i remember that Hit tops video logo, so coool HAH!

  • "excuse me sir, your statue turned me into a monster"

    "good one bernie"

always wanted one of those trapdoor fences and what the hell was in that shake lol

  • As a young child, I desperately wanted to own one of the fake monster statues used in this film; I even planned out exactly what part of my living room I'd position it in some day. Years later, in the age of ebay and countless other websites to help shoppers track down rare items used in cinema, I've had no luck. I'm sure they're out there somewhere; probably displayed in a T.G.I. Friday's.

  • I remember this as a kid but I couldn't remember the name. Great find

  • That's a good one Bernie! ( first base attempt)

  • @horsepheus LOL! I SWEAR TO GOD, THAT KID IS GAY FOR BERNIE!!!

  • @oHellnAwxproduktions Ha, Good one!

  • @oHellnAwxproduktions Let me guess nostalgia critic?

  • @supermariofan03

    yes sir

  • Nostalgia Critic just reviewed this, yet I still secretly think it's awesome!! :D

  • Thanks for adding this! I've looked everywhere for it. I still have my pet monster after all these years.

  • I remember this movie, I just couldnt remember the name of it. I was thinking it was called the Monster Mash because of the song in the beginning. Thank you for Loading it.

  • wow i watched this movie so much when i was little, i forgot all abt it til now

  • OMG! I looked up who played Dr. Snyder on Wikipedia and it says he played King harkinan on the legend of zelda cartoon! The one that inspired the faces of evil king harkinan who always wanted "Dinner".

  • @Dudinator123 The man who played Dr. Snyder also played the Shopkeeper from The Haunted Mask episode of the Goosebumps series (he also reprised the role in The Haunted Mask II episode).

  • @Clamanath: Wow, That's suprising since the Director Timothy Bond from this movie, also directed those same two goosebump episodes! :D

  • I used to watch this movie aaaalllll the time. This is bringing back to many memories.

  • I am so...so looking forward to the Nostalgia Critic's review of this...:)

  • Excited about the Nostalgia Critic doing this, although I don't know if he's going to review this movie or the cartoon series. I still have good memories watching this show, even though it's incredibly dumb as an adult.

  • @83phatman The movie but he does acknowledge the T.V. show.

  • This is Awesome!

  • i loved this shit when i was like 5

  • My god looks this stupid, and the acting is so bad.

I thought the Series was silly. But that takes the cake.

  • The Nostalgia Critic is going to review this in a few months. He's going to a have a field day with this.

  • i still have my my pet monsters

  • I had the toy. Looks so awesome and the breakable chain is a nice touch.

  • I remember this,it brings back memories of my childhood!

  • takes me back to when i was around 8

  • This brings back so many memories for me. First saw this 1986 Canadian produced feature in 1992 on VHS and surprised to see it here after all these years.

Also surprised to know that Colin "Psi-Factor" Fox was in this too

    Thanks for posting this

  • How come there wasn't a sequel to this...the end of this movie makes it seem as if there would be since the doctor guy gets the power to turn into a monster himself

  • OMGGGGGG! I cant believe u have this video...

  • I remember receiving the plush monster at age three. It was given to me because I adored this movie.. but the plush monster.. well, it gave me nightmares!!

  • What warning comes before your warning?

    a) Blue background with yellow text

    b) Sky blue background with black text (seen on a few Barney videos)

  • thanks much

  • oh my gosh, memories here!! honestly, i would rent this video just for the opening credits. for some reason, the whole video game themed credits fascinated me as a child :)

oh yeah, and those green shakes freaked me out

  • I also got this from a TEENY little video store. About the size of four phone booths pushed together. Ahhh... Late eighties, early nineties.

  • The middle monster statue is said to be Beastor I believe, and it's implied Schneider will become Beastor. Is this setting him up to be the main villain in the cartoon? Which came first? This, or the toon?

  • TheCripplerChick: The movie came first, one year before the cartoon.

  • My parents would take us to a little video store almost 2 decades ago when I was a kid. I used to rent this movie EVERY time...and I couldn't for the life of me remember anything except a little boy chasing a school bus through backyards and something about a monster.

Then look at what my girlfriend digs up: the movie I haven't had any idea about in forever! Great job...I think you'll probably become one of my most-watched members.

  • Knowing that lots of rare and/or obscured movies ended up on those $1-DVDs that are sold at Walmart or any place that sells $1-DVDs, I'm surprised that this one has not been released onto DVD, which would most likely be released as a $1-DVD if it is ever to be released onto any DVD or digital video format.

  • wow, no way.

i watched this EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT as a kid !!

    thanks for posting (:

  • When I was a kid I would rent this movie every weekend from this old mom and pop video store till one day they just gave it to me.

  • i used to get this all the time, also! It was and still is virtually unheard of hear in England though. Its a great memory

  • Sadly since the My Pet Monster cartoon has been released onto DVD, it's sad they didn't include this live action movie. This is a very obscured and rare movie from the 80s. I rented it a lot from a local video rental back when I was still in elementary school. The only other place that I've seen the actor of Snyder, Colin Fox, was in Tommy Boy with both S.N.L. stars David Spade and Chris Farley. The first customer who bought break pads from them two. "Okay. I'll buy from you."

  • I love this movie!! Hi-Top videos was the thing back then

  • Haha I watched this so many times as a kid. The intro always made me wish such a video game existed.

  • Wow families in the 80s were sooo white lol.

BTW I always remembered them drinking that goddamn green shake. I always wondered WTF was in it.

  • Prune something or other. And yeah the green shakes were a vivid memory for me too.

  • same here. the green shakes, the bus, and the red monster guy/statue. I still have the toy(minus handcuffs) and his one of his horns is deflated. Rex our rat terrier did it. His nose was dangerous! Like a kilo of plastic! Rex broke his nose on it!

  • I wish there was a part 2. The end left you thinking there was going to be a part 2.

  • wish i still had the movie and toy!!!!

  • this movie is classic! Wow the memories coming back like crazy!

  • i was just watching the trailer for this movie and had to do a search for it. This is a classic. Thanks for posting up this video.

  • fucker, your statues turned me into a monster!

  • Used to rent this all the time back in the 80's. Thank you so much for posting this!!

  • YAY i found it!!!

  • I've spoken a few times with Alyson Court ( played the girl... also played the original Loonette on Big Comfy Couch ) and she said the reason for the poodle sub-plot was that this was a pilot initially.

This would've been a show, but it became the cartoon. Which is also why the actors who portrayed Max, Melanie and Snyder all ended up doing voices for the cartoon.

Because they had spent so much money on this live action version it was released as a straight-to-video movie.

    - trevor.

  • That's awesome.

  • @DustbinOfChildhood that's not my pet monster is ratioactive Garfield pleshie

  • Omg Alyson Court. Drool!

  • why couldent the actor who played the big brother been on the cartoon serus as well make him a cartoon teenager

  • Executives, my friend. For only in television can people who are completely unqualified be in charge of making vital decisions.

Another reason, I've been told, that the series never made it in live action was because the monster suit was so elaborate and heavy.

Plus, the blue dye never completely dried and it left the actor inside the suit ( not Max but a midget ) with a weird blue stain on his skin for several weeks after shooting.

Alyson didn't remember if the toy came first or not.

  • wow thanks for replying on my comment man i used to rent it all the time those were the good od days

  • @Exit13online I think the live-action version would've have a more profound effect on my childhood. Awesome story. I remember buying this tape for .99 cents at a 2nd hand store.

  • @Exit13online I wonder if Doug "Nostalgia Critic" Walker knew that before he reviewed the movie.

  • Ahhhh good old 80's child hood memories.

  • I was sent here by me. :) lol I have this movie on Vhs tape from when i was little.
