Man I want an EV. My little 4 cylinder powered car has been perfectly reliable but it is very, very worn out. I'm sick of the vibration, the noise, the smell, the oil changes, the cost of gas, and the changing gears. I just want to hit the accelerator and GO!

i agree, top gear is propaganda. there's no way driving it like that will cut the range to 50 miles...that's almost the volt's range!!!

and they try to make it look sooooo bad! they put down the prius by saying it only got 17 mpg on the race track...that obviously can't be true for a 50+ mpg car...

i like the show, but top gear is propaganda...they love oil, they love the oil copmanies.

Pushing it hard, the engine will be running all the time. That plus the weight of added components brings it down below levels of normal cars.

Then they tested it against a BMW M3, which weights only a little more, plus they had it drive leisurely behind the Prius. It turned in 19 mpg - obviously becaus it was easy going for the car, accelerating and breaking less than the Prius.

Also, the other problems Clarkson said they ran into didn't exist. They blew a fuse and... that's about it.

If it has Air Conditioning, how is the A/C powered? Does using A/C effect the driving range? Or is there a separate battery?

Yes it has A/C and sure it will affect your range - same as gas mileage for fuel powered cars :)

BTW... You have a targa top in this roadster, why would you use A/C then :)

because electric doesn't have any torque curves or any of that nonsense, an electric horse power equals many many combustion HP. The tesla may have around 500 gas HP, but idk. whats the mpg? around a hundred, right.

i think that 60-70 KW are enough to pull the beast! electric power is less than gas power, but efficency is about 95% compared to 10% of a gasoline car...

Yes, assembly is in the UK, the headquarters are in the US, and the motor is produced in Taiwan...quite a blend.

I find the choice on producing the motor in Taiwan a questionable one on grounds of QM though farther QM can be done in the US they likely got a deal on purchasing an existing plant vs buying motors from GE or Siemens.

Though they do produce the battery cells in the US.

I agree there are negative connotation to QM in Taiwan, yet these may not always have a basis in fact when it comes to modern Taiwan, and particularly the selected facility. Countries highly regarded for QM overall have their exceptions. Overcoming the outdated image is the challenge of many asian tigers today, yet their human resources and drive to excel in the post-American world are very formidable.

Hey, most of our computer parts, TVs and lots of other stuff are made in China (both Taiwan & mainland), Korea, singapore, etc... and they are worrking quite well. It ALL depends of manufacturer if their goods are "crap" or "High Quality". When motor is designed by qualificated engineers (in US, europe, anywhere) and manufactured exactly with standards why should it be bad?

Today was my day in the Tesla Roadster, not behind the wheel, but in the cockpit nonetheless. We launched from the new Santa Monica dealership onto the 405 freeway and proceeded to rocket past everything. The G-force sensation is pure motorcycle or runway take off. Telsa Airlines has arrived.

I have been following Tesla's development the last 3 years so it was unreal to be actually sat in one, let alone drive it. It is a really strange feeling, polling along making no noise and the acceleration is really just phenomenal. It has the quickest 30 - 70 mph of ANY production car and as Clarkson will no doubt say.....it's absolutely astonishing...
