  • Steve Excellent!

  • Yeah "What he said" ^ lol

  • @SuperPlectrist have you ever met steve lukather ? He is also one of my favorite guitar player! because I heard that steve lukather and petrucci are friends, oh and btw, can you watch that video of me playng

/watch?v=YBJg4gERFLY it is from my other account and I just wanted from a professional.

  • @SuperPlectrist you have a lot of luck to be rich and meet all those kind of people. It would be a dream for me to see perurcci my hero but i am very poor so I will never

  • He should be in G3

  • Holdsworth, Morse, Dimeola, Lane - The big 4.

  • @MrGuitarguy1986 Don't forget the new kid on the scene Guthrie Govan

  • 4 people don't know good music

  • Most anyone would kill for a guitarist on their recording that sounded 1/2 as good in session as Steve does live. He is beyond MY imagination! Thanks for the great video! - Mike

  • Thats true.Petrucci is very good to speedpicking, but musically me think Morse is a more seasoned musician. He can play everything.

  • God dammit , that slap prelude...Is SO FUCKING...lovely. =]

  • The best thing about morse is he is a virtuoso who doesnt need to constantly show off and bore me with how fast he can play scales. He's all feel.

  • What can one say about...the extraordinary and very astute playing... the arrangement of the piece...and for the myriad of: tones he achieves through ought: from the pickups(S); including the blending - in and out - e.g - the implementing of the synth pickup - the pedal-board - very enthralling guitar tones, indeed - *Simply mind-boggling! - It's much like a juggling routine, - quite hard to get a proper understanding, if one has not had the good fortune of seeing a Morse or Dregs show live -

  • I had the good fortune to Steve Morse open for McLaughlin, diMeola, and deLucia in the early 1980s. I was familiar with some Dregs recordings, but this of course was solo acoustic work and it was fantastic. It was very cool when he came back later and joined the trio for a little four-way guitar flurry.

Catch a couple of photos of Steve with the great Allan Holdsworth on The Real Allan Holdsworth site (click on the Pix link).

  • @moodlifter Oops. Just noticed you said the same thing. This was before malmsteen hit the scene and eddie was the bomb too. Back then I think holdsworth was playing with bill bruford. Great shows. Also, like Robert fripp and king krimson.

  • Brings me to tears of joy every time I watch it. Thank you Steve, Dave and Van. It just never gets old does it??!!

  • I categorically disagree w/audiobrazil: you'd be right if you were talking about practically *any* other rock instrumentalist, but that is precisely why so many of us think it's a crying shame that more people don't know about Steve Morse. With Morse, it's ALL about the music; his musical heart is what drives him to master his instrument like he has. Go back and listen again, from 3:10 to 5:32. Close your eyes and listen to the phrasing, the variety of styles, moods and colors in his solo.

  • SOOO vokkin' right you are. Morse is good beyond imagination. Perfect technical skills but not a slave of his furious playing but using it to make blues the way I never heard it before. If Jimi good have heard this he most certainly go wild.

    Gr. Jan

  • Steve is so freakin good! To me, he's the best...and only because he plays the guitar the way I like to hear it played. No other player inspires me like Steve Morse does. Are there better players technically? Of course! There's always someone better!

  • does anyone know, what he uses for the sections sounding like a string section?

  • A great tune, oops.... great composition ;).... Dregs' 2nd studio album "What If". Dug it then (at 17) and still diggin' it today.

  • There are alot of guitarists that make my jaw drop and shake my head with amazement...but then putme to sleep with their never-ending guitar solos. I have seen Morse about 100x and he never bores me. No other guitarist can put a smile on my face, like Morse can. I have seen everybody and this guy is the genuine article. I have met him a dozen times and he is personable and humble. A unique talent...I hope he plays forever!!!

  • Victor YEAH! fact is, theres sooo many talented players out there. Francis Rocco Prestia, Stanley Clarke, Stu Ham, Ginger Baker. What I like to see in a musician, being one myself, is that they play clean, unobtrusive, supporting the band and then when instructed unleash their power. Because you have to be a team player and let the other guys or your boss..shine in the spotlight. Then when it's your turn....MELT THEIR FACES!!!

  • Oh, And lets not forget Mr Dave LaRue, who is one SICK, WICKED MF'r of a Bass player. I like him better than Billy Sheehan, But that is my opinion. One of the best i've seen. Jeff Berlin is also one of the best. As is Miroslav Vitous and Jaco. It's a never ending subject. BYE

  • In my opinion what makes "the best guitarist" is the ability to juggle different styles. Some just Rock, other just Blues, others are just shredders. SM covers all these bases and then some. He is conservatory trained, BUT is not cold like most conservatory trained musicians who frown on Bluegrass, Rockabilly, blues, Jazz. Steve plays all of the above plus Classical with taste, style and flair. All you need is an open mind. PS Oh by the way, he is the best.

  • Couldn't have put it any better than how you just did.

  • I dont care who thinks what guitarist is the best in the world. All I know is by far steve morse always keeps me listening I never get bored watching or listening to him play coz unlike most solo artist/guitarist steve to me is the best. Not only that too but seeing him influences me to get better.

  • This is so fkin amazing... Good music

  • Its sure that Steve Morse is not worried about being the best guitar man. He probably is more interested in playing

  • @adolfothedrifter I agree, and I believe this is the way every guitarist should think cause if not you will just be shot down cause there will always be someone that would appear to you as greater than you, if guitarist cant admit it to themselves then theres no helpin ya.

  • Thats the reason why in some sports an athlete cant reach 10 points. Some other athlete can have a better performance than the previous one.

I love watching Steve's performances, but I have to admit that I'm more interested in Dave La rue's performace. Being someone who loves the sound of a bass, I 'm impressed with La rue's ability.

  • And thats a choice that I can fully respect, I love the way Dave plays too, just on the oppisite end though. Dave is an outstanding bass player Period! but I have to admit I like Victor Wooten alot better, just as for listening preference though. You can kill me for that statement. lol

  • That's your opinion and I respect it. Good players are always admired.

  • I see the argument over who is "the best guitar player." Except that is isn't, not really. It's an argument over "who I like better." Let me put it this way: you may like Slash or Dimebag (or whoever) better than Morse, and that's perfectly valid. But this man plays guitar like no other on Earth. This clip is TWENTY FREAKING YEARS OLD; it was recorded in 1990. Really watch his playing closely: maybe three or four other guitarists on Earth could play this whole piece, even if given his exact rig.

  • @jfl440

and some "props" to the Kid on Da Bass...

  • @timminananda You said it brotha! Dave Larue is amazing!

  • @jfl440 not to mention tho playing it exactly like him its possible to play this peice exactly using a volume pedal what makes his style crazy is how he gets his different tones not just from pedals but by certain volume settings on his guitar, that takes alot of coordination and accuracy on hitting strings you need to hit.

  • Now the clip itself: It's good that this clip is up, because the DVD its taken from is an instructional video, which would not interest a lot of people who will really enjoy this top-notch performance by Steve and the band. The sheer breadth of styles he covers in this one piece is stunning, but the real point is that this is a *great* piece of music. It wasn't written this way to show off. As a friend I played this clip for observed, "all I can say about it is that it makes me smile." Exactly!

  • First, off, techie stuff: too bad the audio isn't hotter. That would make the quiet parts more audible, and get rid of the hiss. I have this DVD, and the sound quality is much better than this.

Perhaps the uploader will go back and re-rip this track with higher audio gain. A little higher video resolution would be good too, but of course, if its too big, those folks without super-fast ISPs will not be able to play it without a lot of lag, so there's that balance to consider.

  • This is one of the most amazing piece of music that I've ever heard! Holy shit,

this rocks !!! Love the Steve Morse band!

  • I know, Damm Genious

  • slashes style is a mix of Blue's/rock. Steve morse -instrumental rock, hard rock, jazz fusion, classical, country.

what i would really like to know is how is Slash being brought up on videos on a "Steve morse band" Video???

  • brilliant. a classic tune by the dixie dregs. and steve morse plays it to perfection. steve is undeniabely the best guitar player in the world, very nice.

  • look at Dave's trainers they are ace!

Can't beat Steve Morse can you really...

  • omg that volume swell trick he did didnt even sound like a guitar sounded like a synth steves such an innovator hes up there with the best prog guitarists definately

  • It IS a synth! Steve uses only three effects: long delay, short delay, and guitar synth - the amount of each being controlled by a volume pedal. His "dry" sound comes from the main amp/speaker while his effected sound is routed to a separate amp/speaker. When he wants one of the three effects (or a combo), he presses one of the volume pedals with his foot and the effected sound is blended with his "dry" sound. He controls the rest of his tone with massive pickup switching and the volume knob.

  • Say or think what you will. But the fact is that there has never been nor will there ever be another guitarist / musician like Steve Morse. There are many that can play faster or maybe do something a little bit better than Morse. But Morse's ability to write and play in so many styles as a virtuoso is without peer. Most of the modern prog guitarists today have been influenced by Morse and have respect for his vast accomplisments. Musicians like Morse aren't made too often. His music is a gift.

  • @cyclist4now

i like steve morse much, but he isnt as great as steve lukather as.

  • @cyclist4now Believe me, I generally agree. Though I side with reanimator that John Petrucci is comparable, either way, Steve Morse is up there. But language like "But the fact is" is dangerous in music. Steve Howe and JP are competitors, and my guess is you don't listen to Julian Bream or Andres Segovia, or some of the world's best Latin fingerstyle guitarists. And for you to predict the future and say there will never be? People thought that about Duane Allman and Eric Clapton

  • @cyclist4now Check out Richie Kotzen. He fits your description pretty good, too :-)

  • @cyclist4now

I agree. Listening to him make me realize where guitar can actually go. It has a range of capability yet undiscovered and Steve takes us to places no has yet.

I intend to keep learning from him by listening. I may never be even close to him, but every time I hear him play it makes me want to try to improve a little more even in my later years.

  • @cyclist4now bravo majstore, long live Steve Morse!!

  • @cyclist4now You got that right

  • @cyclist4now pffft.... "gift"? Right, it sure is fun how naive people can be. It's hard work, a lot of soul and living a dream. Not some magical gift. Surely an inspiration to everyone.

  • rod is better

  • john is better; john idelizes morse but the rule says that the next generations should be better than the past; anyway the truth is that morse should be proud of his fan john petrucci XD

  • They are both phenomenal guitarists and very under rated there are things that one can do that the other cant when it comes right down to it

  • agree

  • XD men... of course i was kidding haha

slash is shit steve morse is god i have all of his albums and they are the best shit that i heard in my life

Baroque and dreams from his new album outstandig in their field is one of the best songs ever

collateral damage, highland wedding, the great mountain spirits, air on g string, cruise missile, cut to the chase and tumeni notes are master pieces

if anyone wants the tab for this version of ice cakes i have it in PDF only email me =D

  • i recon morse is an excellent guitarrist

but I still think Slash is a better musician

IMO, what we see here is music in service of technique

I believe technique should always be in service of music

no wonder Slash is famous for his own songs and Morse is famous for being Blackmore´s substitute

I knew him before that, but that kind of stuph does not turn me on no more.

but I respect those who preffer this kind of music.

  • sorry i respect you but Steve is my fav guitarrist XD

    larga vida al rock!!

  • XD yeah

  • A musician is someone who studies music out there lives like "Steve morse" , steve has his fame in deep purple but he's no substitute for ritchie because ritchie is not returning to Purple, steve is also recognized as "Best overall guitarist for five consecutive years". now everyone has there own opinion but steve morse is not only famous with deep purple.. now go up to a student or instructor at berklee and try this, its going to be steve morse.

  • "A musician is someone who studies music out there lives " I disagree. A musician is someone who makes music. the study is one way of acquiring knowledge.

All theory that exists to be studied was created from 'real' music.

most ppl at berklee may agree that morse is "the best" - which is obvious a very strange term when it comes to ART - cause it´s impossible to be the best at art, since there are different tastes and infinite way of creating emotions.

  • i never said "Best", i enjoyed listening to slash awhile ago but the main type of music i enjoy is instrumental, along with folks i know at berklee that would choose steve morse for his composition skills. & tell me, how does slash end up being compared pretty much on a steve morse band video?

  • I am 100% sure that if you ask Morse if he agrees with him being the best guitar player he´d tell you something very similar to my previous comment. No artist - if he´s a true one - will agree on being "the best", since it makes no sense in artistic terms. It´s just like the OSCAR, an artifact created to attract more audience, so you can sell more advertisement, etc. Useful for those who see music as a product that needs to be labeled, categorized, priced - but not for the music lover. XD

  • of course a guitarist isn't going to call him self the best, its about enjoying playing music.

well i don't need to say more since i have things to do, you have your opinion, i have mine & and i prefer someone with a wider range of music and ideas like steve morse.

  • Actually Petrucci idolizes Steve. And Steve really likes Petrucci....so stop the stupid comparisons. There is no scoreboard or statistics in music. But if you want one: "Best all-around guitarist" so many times in guitar player mag....that he had to be disqualified to win the award anymore!!!

  • low audio level.....

  • Good work steve and dave la rue

  • amazing!!!!!

  • awesome right hand technique! :-)

  • He's fakin it. I know he is! I JUST KNOW HE IS!!!

    (just kidding, of course)

  • bass player is dave la rue?

  • yep

  • Perfect techinic, composition, playing and expressivity. For sure one of my favorite guitar players. Very Impressive alternate picking Nice Tone and guitar

  • actually his alternate picking is rather flawed since he anchors and now has carpel tunnel syndrome.

    otherwise brilliant!

  • He does fast runs and all very clean ... i do think he has nice accuracy in his alternate picking

  • he does very fast runs and all very clean .. i do think he has a cool acurracy is his alternate picking .. take a look at tumeni notes or his alternate picking exercises

  • no I know that he is very accurate and in control of his dynamics but it's still physically flawed.

  • But, you can see its not trouble for him

  • but it is, he has to warm his hands up before playing every day.

Besides, this recording is almost 20 years old.

  • Some docs recommend everybody to warm the hands before playing.. and he plays perfectly until today

  • it works not only in guitar playing but in most activities where precision is required.

  • Flawed my ass.

  • he's not really anchoring from what i can see, he's just laying his finger down, which is useful for his style since he's constantly lowering his volume and switching pups. and i've never heard of anyone getting carpel tunnel from anchoring. and may you point me to some players that have proper alternate picking technique that don't anchor?

  • Paul Gilbert, Kirk Hammet.

  • lol one of them is right, Gilbert does have near perfect picking. Hammet is a tool. but you must not know much about Gilbert, he also tends to rest his fingers on the guitar when he picks because he keeps his palm so close to the bridge like most guitarist do. but he's not anchoring and neither does Morse you think he is for the reason i stated, and i'm sure he does not have carpel tunnel for that reason, as there is no proper picking style for the electric guitar.

  • john petrucci got the ultimate technique

  • lmao cool story bro

  • petrucci is a kid in comparison With Morse...wake up

  • idk man i think Petrucci and Steve are pretty evenly matched i think Paul Gilbert is up there too

  • they are all 3 some guitar monsters...

But I think that Petrucci is less versatile than Morse...

anyway I like them all ( ok, Petrucci in last lol )

  • they're all gods!!

but steve morse is a 5x best guitarist

  • It's my opinion !!!

  • @reanimator9 But at least petrucci credits morse, lifeson and gilmour as his main influences. I remember morse heavily touring NYC back in the 80's with the dregs and his own band so I wouldn't be surprise if petrucci was in the audience with me back then. In those 10 yrs I must've seen every show morse did, including a cameo when McLaughlin, Paco Delucia and DiMeola and he came in from side stage ripping away on acoustic. It was awesome. I even got a early 80s tele deluxe because of him.

  • @reanimator9 petrucci is my favorite musician...but compared to steve morse :/ hes nothing

  • @reanimator9 Petrucci's main influence is Steve Morse

  • @hoanson12 false, petrucci's main influence is Alex Lifeson from the band Rush

  • @reanimator9 and i also think that petrucci would agree with you fella!petrucci has practised his ass off but steve morse is a real musician and he has also played every kind of quality music..!! what do you think?:)

  • Shawn Lane and Marshall Harrison are two examples of perfect picking and do not anchor anywhere near the guitar, but have floating wrists. most fusion players have flawless technique.

  • marshall puts his pinky on the guitar body for support, i thought that was anchoring?

  • he does not. it might look like he is, be he utilizes all of is fingers on his pick hand to hybird pick lines, like Brett Garsed. his write is always floating for this reason.

  • seriously it is, when hes using the figers for hybrid you are right that he does somewhat float the hand but even then he has to rest the palm on the strings to mute them (he even says he does this) and when he is performing a fast picking run or sweep picking run he places his pinky on the guitar body just watch a vid

  • love the harmonics at 3:30!

  • Became a Morse fan when freefall came out, and he's still The Man.

  • that motherfucker is clearly not HUMAN.

  • lol

  • Steve Morse is one Great Guitarist .. actually this whole band is a bunch of talented musicians .

  • " tsifteteli " lol

  • xaxaxxaxa! kala to pes megale... o morse einai ena xantho arxidi ! xaxax

  • J'adore l'intro :D

  • My sweet God.. this guy is too huge to be real...

  • Damn Dave LaRue just rocks! The best! 5 Stars

  • 5:35 :)

  • yeah jaco style. :>

  • Song feels a little empty without the violin and keyboards but whatever still fucking AMAZING!

  • KANSAS w/ Symphony DVD Filming Feb 7th @ Topeka.

"There's No Place Like Home" DVD Project.

STEVE MORSE & Kerry Livgren to Join Them !

    See = KANSASbandCOMM

  • This was not Steve´s best day, but he´s still god :)

  • well his worst day is my best day.

  • 2:37... Where are the violins???

  • that's his guitar. he's doing volume swells using his volume knob, delay, reverb, and probably some other effect.

  • actually, i think he's using guitar synthesizer effects as well.

  • in my opinion, you are looking at the best guitar craftsman on the planet. he knows his guitar better than any other guitar player that i have ever seen. he is well versed in everything fron chicken picken to the blues, to jazz or classical. he can get so fast that you can actually miss his runs. actually listen hard to hear any note at all that isn't played crystal clear. watch newer material on him. he is the king.

  • this is imo the best song ever

  • Steve morse is the best guitar player in the whole world and probably in history! he's not only an amazing guitar player but he also innovated the guitar playing methodes, created technics and he actually feels what he's playing. he doesn't show off while playing and he doesn't do commercials, he's just one of a kind! Steve morse RULES!!!! he's a living legend!

  • I love the crescendo section. It's very uplifting.

  • amazing bassist!!

  • i saw this guy do a clinic about a year ago and he blew my mind. he's a very nice guy. and one of the greatist guitarists ever.

  • steve is the best

  • steve morse is one of the bests out there

  • Unbelievable! Just Fkkn crazy off the top Unbelievable!

  • the bass has the best groove i have ever heard

  • You should hear "Cruise Control " Find the CD and buy it --- It is well worth the money---- The whole CD is awsome

  • Steve Morse has been one of my guitar heroes for years second to Chet Atkins. He is totaly an awsome guitarist.

  • incredible maniability of everyhting

  • i learned to play guitar from that video!!! awesome guitarist! definitely one of the best! i love his bluegrass/rock/jazz style!

  • @stinger66666

Dude... why is he underrated??? dont u rate him highly?? man's a legend!

  • 2:35 to 3:07 sound like a full orchestral piece...not one guitar.

    Amazing!

  • the best song for electric guitar...

  • does anyone have the tabs?

  • There is no such thing as tabs for this type of work

  • i swear, Steve Morse is one of the most underrated guitar players on the planet. Why is it that great performances like this have such a shitty bootleg quality?

  • Don't know --- But I totaly agree --- He is awsome

  • DAVE LaRUE is just as amazing as Steve. They make such a great team. And thought we barely see video of him, Van of course rocks back there on the set. Man, this reminds me of my childhood...

  • god, I can't play whenever I wear my blazer. Vai, and Morse are awesome. Way better than me...

  • This is the standard...

Support this man and buy his shit!!!

  • Yed ---- Definitely buy his stuff

  • steve morse is the best player that i have ever seen. period. i love that he is blistering fast, only as an accent, and you can't even pick it up most of the time. hell, you can't even see it. a tasteful, veristile master with steve vai like vision. (only better than vai.)

  • Un fucking real.

  • I could not agree more. Except I would say it like this..........UN FUCKING REAL!!!!!

  • this man is not from this planet he can,t be f.king insane player damn.

  • There's alot of great guitarist in the world doing some great stuff...but who in the world comes up with stuff like this!!!Only Steve Morse can.

  • Chet Atkins was great at coming up with good stuff -- only he did not use a straight pick

  • best guitar player in the world. guthrie govan too.

  • in my opinion morse brings together technique and harmony perfectly! he´s got ideas no one other has! sorry for my bad english! i´ve already drunken 5 of that german "weißbier" or so called "weizen"

  • dude i just was introduced to morse, he is now one of my fave! this is truly amazing. who all is in the band?

  • Dave Larue on Bass (just finished a tour with G3), Van Romaine on drums. This is a 3 piece version of a Dixie Dregs tune, which is usually a 5 piece band(violin and keys). Morse covers some of the violin and keys parts very well, considering it's just the 3 of them. Welcome to the world of Steve Morse...he never stops amazing me...and I have seen him about 100 times since 1978.

  • I was a young guy when i first heard the Dregs do this back in 1978. I couldn't believe that this type of music existed. I never heard such a tight, clean, sophisticated blend of different syles in one song(and of course from one band). I have seen hundreds of bands since, and i Have yet to hear anything like the Dregs or Morse. I can't believe that Steve still does not get his just due...but maybe that's a good thing. I don't have to fight the gen pub for tix, when he comes around.

  • the ultimate fusion song xzanterx its about 20 yrs old and like steve would say if theres a time for that to happen it should have been then! i have a bootleg of the introduction live at san jose U 1984 same week they was putting it on the shelves he does freeway jam and little wing f'n incredidble and the medly all dregs tunes

  • Hey fastrfret can i get a copy of that bootleg? I also was at that SJSU show and saw The Dregs at the Warfield the night before. I go to any SMB, Dregs or DP show that is withing 150 miles of the Bay Area, they are all such amazing musicians. Not one bit of ego in any of them, completely down to earth. I'm up in San Mateo and work in Atherton and would be willing to go anyplace to get a copy. Call me at 510-714-2090

  • this song is pure art...steve morse is not only an amazing guitarrist, he's also one of my favourite composers ever...I saw him with deep purple once and he stole the show, i bet he allways do that hahahaha.

  • Unique because it seems to encompass so many elements... rock, fusion, country, funk... all in one song it seems. Steve is great and I would have loved to see him with the guitar trio.

  • wow 4 pickups... not bad lol

  • I don't want to put down Purple fans(I love Purple just as much as anyone)...but do they know what Morse is actually capable of???Listen to Ice Cakes, Kat Food, Refried Funky Chicken, Assembly Line, Cruise Missile,Patchwork, etc...If they think he's great in Purple...Rock music actually confines a player like Morse. The Dregs and SMB are his true calling.

  • Man you've got that right on the nose...I saw them (purple) in London,Ont last year...He stole the show in MONTREAL from Dimeola,Paco, and Mclaughin around the time of the above video as well...ALONE on ACOUSTIC.

  • Saw Morse open up for the big 3 back in the early 80's. He joined all 3 on stage, at the end of the night and got the biggest applause. By that time...everyone was a little overwhelmed by all that speed and Morse was a breath of fresh air with his unique style. The amazing thing...was that very few people knew who Morse was that night, and he still recieves the loudest applause.

  • Yah lots of Dregs fans around then ..He was already huge amongst us "wannabees'(ha ha)...so the same show? And he\'s such a humble guy too..good to see..He's my top 3 fav players ..always. Check the vid on here with him and Rik Emmett..good stuff they wrote it just before he show which was a Much Music taping.

  • Unreal...

  • thank you ZHARLOU for requesting this music..

    thnks TIOHC for uploading..

hopfuly this song will be popularized!!

    indescribable...

wat kind of song was this?/

  • this is a real man, the kind that rape dinosaurs, because their manlyness allows them to! this guys soo good he killed one of my friends when he was listening to mechanical frenzy! his damn eyes exploded R.I.P buddy boy

  • I only saw the Dregs once. I was living in Portland, Oregon. It was the "Dregs of the Earth" tour and they came to the Neighbors of Woodcraft. I went with 16 other friends. We took up most of an entire row. Great show.

  • WOW..When was this? What a command of the electric guitar! Beautiful piece. A Master piece.

  • morse is just simply one of the best, unknown genius on guitar. this should be mandatory listening for all those tone-deaf thrashers out there.

    man, i miss this band.

  • Great guitarist, great composer. Which one? More please.
