And logically the licensing fees would be larger. The companies whom bring it over have to figure out a way to earn the money back and then some. After all they are a company out for profit. If they can't make money they won't stay in the industry for long.
Not all series will make money that way though. We're going to have companies like Aniplex and NIS america that are going to bank more so on collectors while people like Funimation and Viz bank on cheap otaku. Sentai is in the middle.
I'm HOPING Aniplex will later down the road release a cheaper half set. What they're doing with that set is literally importing the Japanese blu ray set and slapping an extra book on it. What I'm also hoping is that they're targeting people who import by doing it that way.
I don't think all series will go back to 4-6 episodes a disk. The reason I'd like to believe we're seeing certain series handled that way is due to licensing fees. Puella and K-ON were huge hits in Japan.
The sad thing is, that Fate/Zero boxset is only half of the series. Aniplex is clearly only targeting a certain audience because people are insane enough to drop 400+ on half a series. It's a surefire way to make 800 dollars since if you buy the first season, you just have to buy the second. IYou don't have to look further back than Kara no Kyoukai, where they charged something like 600 dollars for 7 movies...and it was sold out within a day or two. Insane.
most companies do make anime expensive like sentai filmworks and aniplex america and so on i would only buy from them if rightstuf has a sale and also funimation is awesome with there prices in my opinion compared to most companies and i think kon was expensive since the company is no long sellin anime i think 35 bucks aint bad for bakuman since the anime is awesome
Man here in Australia anime is a total rip off. I mean for season 1 of code geass here is $80. Seriously thats just not code geass thats other sets of 26 episodes. Box sets are ridiculous too.
I stick to the anime that are within the $1 - $2 per episode range which usually means I don't get anything that just came out. They get cheaper as time goes on at least (sometimes) I have been noticing the prices going up though but I just try to not play favorites when i buy unless I REALLY WANT IT BADLY. Go for the best looking anime at an affordable price usually though and wait for the more expensive ones to hopefully reduce at some point.
And this is one of the many reasons why Funimation dominates over 80% of the anime market in North America, they + Sentai Filmworks are the only 2 I know of who release complete sets, 13 episode sets, or season sets over volumes
Media Blasters has also gone back to doing volumes but 7 episodes of Bakuman for $20 isn't that bad honestly, back in the mid 2000s it used to cost $30 for just 3 or 4 episodes on DVD
I'd gladly pay 40 dollars for the complete series of 12 episode series like Baccano or Sengoku Basara. If an anime is obsecely long like One Piece is they should charge a little less. And 370 yeah i'll pass.
The Japanese fans are willing to pay at least $60 US for 2 episodes of Madoka. In the US they are selling 4 episodes at a third of the price 4 episodes would be in Japan.
This is just the beginning. I foresee a day when they'll be trying to charge us directly for watching trailers. If they're allowed to get away with it.
The One Piece collections are an amazing deal though. I wanted to get into One Piece since Funimation got it in 2008 but those 12/13 episode parts were just way too money for way too less for me so once the collections have been releasing I've just been preordering those the second I see them on RS
I have to be honest I don't mind the slight switch to single DVDs at all, it makes them much cheaper if you buy from Rightstuf or even Amazon its like $15-18 dollars for 5-7 episodes every other month so I know I can buy it instead of having to worry about if I'll have the money to pay for a $40-50 dollar box set. I don't really mind it, the only series I have to deal with single DVDs that I'm buying right now is Bakuman from Media Blasters
back when i first started buying anime around 07 08 that's all i was seeing were singles before then i was only watching anime on television and when toonami was cancelled i never bought any anime till right around when haruhi suzumiya first came out that was the first series i bought and waited for the single it looks like some titles are going back to that like Madoka Msgica being released as singles they can easily release a complete set if they wanted to!
We in Japan get absolutely raped with DVD/BR anime prices. I am in the middle of anime mecca, but the cost of collecting pushed me away. I can't fathom how the Japanese consumers let the companies get away with the total disregard of logical pricing.
@japanesesandman its how it will be here soon, its just because small things slip through and they charge more and people keep buying, then the bar raises then they slowly raise the price again. its crazy really. and they wonder why people pirate stuff lol
@japanesesandman Do yiu know why they price anime so high in Japan I thought it would be the same as america and its tv shows but Japans dvd are far more expensive
Aniplex has the most retarded ideas, they think they can release their anime sets in the US for the same price they can in Japan IE the Madoka singles for like 70$ and the 370$ Fate Zero boxset. It is just really bad marketing and I hope none of the major company’s try and pull this shit.
@RenegadeSniper6 im not sure, see the thing with that is, you cant buy empty boxes anymore, but the loyal people who buy the things in singles are screwed because they paved the way for the people who get to buy it cheap with a better box. i really want to get into unicorn but idk how thats all going to play out now that bandai is dealing with its current situation in america
And logically the licensing fees would be larger. The companies whom bring it over have to figure out a way to earn the money back and then some. After all they are a company out for profit. If they can't make money they won't stay in the industry for long.

I think Anilplex is trying different types of marketing, look at how they are selling three different anime at the same time.
Blue Exorcist gets DVD single releses for around $30.
Madoka gets DVD for $30, Blu-Ray for $40, Blu-Ray/DVD Combo with extras (stickers, OST, Drama CD, Production Booklet, and a Poster) for $75.
Fate/Zero Blu-ray plus extras for $399.
If Funimation didn't get Guilty Crown or FMA: Brotherhood they would probably be released just like the above.

I wouldn't mind going back to single DVD sure plus I miss the anime artboxs form the old days. Yeah I agree with you on Fate/Zero.
