Eddie, please don't assume anything about me. I lived in a former east block country for years. Communism is good in theory - people's greed and powerhungriness screw it up. In China it is NOT a good thing. Please refer to TroyCWright's comments. He knows what he's talking about. These girls are coerced and their bodies (and spirits?) ruined.see 2:07
To young viewers: China is a COMMUNIST country, not a DEMOCRACY. This means these girls have no choice. This is PROPAGANDA: It does not show the TRUTH, but what someone wants you to believe. Just because someone put nice music on a video and some titles saying this is "family" DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT IS SO. Ask your parents what "critical thinking" means...
Maybe they do the girls do this cus they have fallen in love with the sport, yeah its tuff but think about what an opportunity they are given. Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean you go blaming the communists!
yes but if you look at the girls do they rlly look that miserable, yes some part they are crying but gymnastics is a not some sport where you can just pass by. THe thing is that these girls already know what they want to grow up to do
Ok we all might find this bad and weird but that is just how they train. At the end of this video it has a point this is there home and everyone there is there faimly. if they didnt like this they would just quit
This is SICKENING. I have lost complete respect for the Chinese gymnastic training system (not that I had a lot before this). We all suspected this was going on and worse, and here it is. Rob them of their physical health and their childhoods and their future just to win a damn olympic medal? This is a crime to humanity. Girls, we care and would like to see you succeed without cruelty & torture. WRIGHT IS RIGHT!
Listen, yes it is kinda bad but if the girls didnt like it they could just quit, yes they may have to suffer like this but they are rlly trying to pursue there dreams
Thanks for the upload...its amazing to see how much dedication and hard work these little girls put into their gymnsatics...it sometimes is so hearbreaking!!
It's abuse by any reasonable person's standards & it's a detriment to power. It's 1 reason China hasn't been as competitive on power events-tumbling & vault-as the US. That stretching creates great lines/leaps/bars/etc, but hurts power. In my opinion, no gain is worth the torture, pain & destruction caused by this. I say this as someone who has seen, in person, the training/competition of Miller, Memmel & Shawn Johnson. None of them trained, to my knowledge, in that severe a manner.
no like my gym makes us stretch and do things over and over again but they dont like hit us and stuff like they do the like make us strech a whole lot and forse our sp[lits i think u took it the wrong way but they dont whip our backs around and stuff they make us practice flexibility but the dont force it they do a little bit but not like extremi=ely i think u took it the wrong way
Yeah, we help our gymnasts push a little in their splits. Lots of coaches do that. But, to do that to the point of that kind of pain is extremely dangerous. I am glad to hear that you are not experiencing anything like what is in the video. Keep working hard and good luck.
How about the video you don't see-kids that wash-out; broken, battered, and ostracized. The other video not seen-these girls at 30, unable to walk w/out pain. The disturbing thing is that these coaches don't care, because they can get another when they break one. It's unnecessary to train to that kind of pain to be an international gymnast. It's not the way gymnasts train. It's how China chooses to do it. It's sad to know that people with power abuse it so horribly.
You have to remember that this is China, they have a good reputation to uphold. Some things, I find a little harsh, but let's face it - This is gymnastics. Flexibility, strength and stamina are key to the sport. I'm amazed at the girls who train like this. This is the reason that China are amazing at gymnastics.
Do you know what is miss in this movie? A laugh of a child that enjoys her sport and is proud of whas she's doing! A pain in my heart 2 see this kids loose there childhood....
I talked one time to a gymnastics coach in San Antonio and she said that it's not right to stretch young kids so much because this can seriously injure their muscles when they are growing up. You might think it's O.K. to stretch them like that, but I am sure you wouldn't want youk kids to feel the horrible pain these gymnasts go through every day. When these kids get older they get all these surgeries and terrible injuries because of all the overwork their muscles have gone through.
for all of those with anoying comments, I'd say that if this were film in an estern center like in US, u'd be sayin "oh my gosh, how incredible r we the nice white people!", but cuz they r chinese, all of what u see is bad or molesting. It'd be great to know what do u think about the catolic priest child abussers...suckers!
Soemtimes they are put through things that are a bit beyond them, but when they are jus stretching, they're not actually in awful pain - you have to have some pain or you'll never improve. These girls are trained very hard so that they can achieve - it is tough - but at least they're always together and are fed well etc.
Gosh you know... these kids would go home if they did not like it...now eveyone has bad times and bad days.. but they are also taught many good life skills and I dont think anything I saw on this video is out of line.. that is just they way it is.. and those kids are WAY flexible... they did not look like they were in much pain at all!
Of course they are flexible; they've been streching since they were four! And how do you know they can leave if they want? Thet they don't have parents at home that decide that this is what they are supposed to do with their lives. They're like, seven? Yeah...they probably decide that for them selves...
I think these girls probably will go through a lot worse when they get old because they strech and bend their bodies in unnatural ways. Great to be good at something, but put the same amount of work into school work, I say. It is horrible to see grown men put their full weight on little girls lying in unbearable positions!
What an asshole. This comment of yours just show how ignorant you are. That's just the normal way to streech for a gimmnast. That's why not everybody is a olympic gold medallist. If you think that's awfull, you should watch rytmic gimmnastics. In the other hand, I think that something really horrible is what US army has been doing to Irak's people.
I do not doubt that this is normal for many gymnasts. I just said that I think it can hurt many of them in the long run because they are bent in unnatural ways by other people. People that definitely doesn't feel the signs from the body if something isn't right. I know a balletdancer who now has a hip replacement because of all the streching in her youth. And by the way; I know what is being done to the Irak people, but this video wasn't about that, so I didn't think to comment that issue.
Wow they are amazing can you send me some tricks so that i can get as good as them. i am a gymnast myself but want to be as good as them. thank you if you do.
u need 2 sacrifice in order 4 good results and as deebanana said its a way 2 escape poverty and i agree with that.there are so many children who would go through that pain to have the skills that these girls have.and u need 2 remember the advantages not only disadvantages cuz there is a chance that they will achieve a successful future without going through poverty!i think those gymnasts would rather go through sum pain rather than hunger.its not lyk u die.its TRAINING!
Why don't parents complain to the coaches about the harsh treatment that is given to their kids like in the U.S.and in western countries? Why do they let their kids be abused by these people, shouldn't they protect them? Does this still happen in Romania and Russia?
The coach that is in the uneven bars is touching the girl's rear, that is prohibited in the U.S. and should be banned in China. I really think The Chinese training system is horrible, it is extremely cruel and exploits the youth. All they care about is winning at all costs at the expense of the gymnasts.
if he doesn't touch the girl's rear, she might fall. Her waist or legs aren't the best parts either because if anything happens and he can't balance her or catch her in time, catching her waist or legs might make her bend her body and she might hit the bar instead
to felix2908: not to be callous but an athlete's career is basically over by the time they enter their thirties. re parents' responsibility: their kids are a chance to escape from poverty. the parents give up everything so that their kids have a chance to become famous and rich so that the entire family doesn't suffer in the future.
to cont.: unlike westerners who think that childhood is a time for play, many chinese think that it's better to suffer during one's youth and live in comfort later on, rather than suffer during one's adult life, which is longer than childhood. that's the philosophy behind sending kids to places like the one in the vid.
That this video exists answers the question of whose parents would do such a thing. And although it is possible to achieve the same level through less pain, you have to remember that in China, if you are one of a million, there are a thousand others just like you. By undergoing such intense training, you reach that level at a younger age, giving you a slight edge at competitions against others.
in the beggening the one in yellow was kicking ass, the rest were strugling but she was doing it like it was nothing! dude that was one awesome vid, they work so hard, this is rlly going to make me push harder and try harder.. thanks!
Sadly, Yes.. thats how you get good though, Our gym g=does all that. Yes its torture butto me, its worth it. Gymnastics is the sport that i love, you have to work hard to succeed. Awesome Montage.
Looks like child abuse to me. If I did that to my kids legs I'd be locked up! The only time those girls smiled was when they got to leave that hellhole. No excuse for that.
For girls who want to compete for the senior level (compete for world championship at the age of 14 and olympics at the age of 15), she must start earlier than 6. 5 to be ideal. For guys, 8 is not too late because all 6 apparatus are energy intensive.
That's just the way gymnastics is. Becoming a gymnast is extremely hard, and sometimes excruciatingly painful, if you do it for passion it's fine, if you're forced it must be torture...
This is incredible. I cant help thinking though "what about an education"? You know, nothing is more important than education. Out of all of the hundreds of girls there, only 6 will make it to an Olympic or World team. And for those who dont make it, its back to a life of poverty, as they dont have an education to fall back on. Very sad.
the part where that girl has a bloody hand...its not that uncommon for a gymnast...its happened to people at my gym a lot and we don't work out half as intensely as they do...
You should all watch the whole documentary before commenting and saying things you don't know about. They interviewed the children and stuff. They are orphans btw and i don't think they like what they do. They want to play outside and be a child instead of doing paracommando training. :s
Yes, for the ones who make it it will pay off. What about the ones who dont. As I said in another comment, because they dont receive an academic education, those who dont make it end up back in the poverty they tried to escape from by starting gymnastics. Its a vicious circle.
I agree its absolutely awful and sad... But for an example read about arguably China's current best female gymnast... Cheng Fei... because of her success in gymnastics her parents are now not as badly off, I think the government even gave her an apartment and her parents are going to live there (she of course is still training on campus etc) .
Btw- whoever asked they do do school... I believe its a bit like the Romanian system though... a couple of hours a day beside their training. There is huge pressure on these kids... but if they succeed they also gain a lot (especially for living in China). For an elite champion in China they are paid, given accommodation, good health care etc which beats some of the sweatshops by far. For some of these kids this is a 'good life' and they are brainwashed into thinking its normal.
They dont receive any education at all. I read an interview with a Chinese gymnast(a top one, I will try to find the interview), and she said they dont receive any education at all. Without success in gymnastics, they have nothing at all to fall back on, as they dont receive education. There isnt time for education when you are training at this level.
no its not. its voluntary. gymnastics is like martial arts, theres a lot of discipline. We look at shaolin monks and say wow, thats cool, but we look at these gymnasts and say thats cruel? its cause the chinese r so 1337. they should be given the same amount of awe and respect shaolin monks get, not pitied. and if u say "o, but their girls", then ur being a sexist who thinks girls are weaker physically and weaker willed.
they go to school. if they stop training, they continue school... if they continue training (which means they're really good) they get to go to university too.
Wow, thats why when you see them in competitions they have amazing form, excellent techniques and beautiful body lines. It is hard to watch their training. They are so diciplined and tough not only physically but mentally as well. I hope they do well and that they have fun along the way!! Go girls!!
okay well im a gymnast and i train 56 hours a week yes these kids have tough coaches but most coaches are. people say that in australia the coaches wouldnt do all that to us well i can tell you from training at the A.I.S that the top coaches in australia are from china and russia and look how well america and china and russia have done in the olympics australia has never done well its not sick their flexibility bc we are natrualy flexible if we didnt stretch like that then we would lose alot
this one my favourite montages... great job... u really captured these kids lives... i hope china wins gold at Beijing because i beleive the chinese gymnasts are an inspiration to us all... they have so little and give up sooo much for a dream.... all the best to them in beijing...
dont talk rubbish if all you ignorant ang mohs dont know anything. these kids WANT to get be the olympic champion. not forced to. go watch the documentary dont base it on your own opinion.
What kind of dumb argument is that? Every 5 year old wants to be an olympic champion... It's the responsibility of the parents to make sure their kids grow up healthy. These girls will be in a wheelchair at 30something. A 5 year old can't make his own decisions.
dude this is scary! i just found this vid! and the person to comment after me has the same name! hi i'm felix! i don't think they will be in a wheel chair it's look horrible but it just streches their muscles... they'll be pretty fit...i'm sure they carry them the hopsital for check ups.
sorry, I was commenting some other guy a couple of pages back who said the kids want this for themselves, guess I haven't quite figured this out yet. As to the stretching...this goes way beyond stretching muscles. This is ruining a young kid's spine. They will get serious joint problems in the future. In my opinion a person can do anything he wants to his body, but only if he's old enough to make such a dicision for himself. These kids obviously aren't.
yea true... but then again a kid never makes the choice to go to school, the parents do.. so it's up to the parents... the kids were laughing and stuff, it's not as bad as it looks.
who said that they will be in wheelchair? Many of them are living like us normally in their 40s and 50s. You can't stretch like that because you are not 5!
i thought my gym was tough.

Looks like child abuse to me. If I did that to my kids legs I'd be locked up! The only time those girls smiled was when they got to leave that hellhole. No excuse for that.

eugeniasai 4 years ago
oh did they start gymnastics at a young age???alot of them probably did!
gymnastluvr7 4 years ago
For girls who want to compete for the senior level (compete for world championship at the age of 14 and olympics at the age of 15), she must start earlier than 6. 5 to be ideal. For guys, 8 is not too late because all 6 apparatus are energy intensive.

Its not that they can't afford them, they just prefer not to use them. They actually gave me a rash on my wrists, so I didn't use them either.

Very sad.

You should all watch the whole documentary before commenting and saying things you don't know about. They interviewed the children and stuff. They are orphans btw and i don't think they like what they do. They want to play outside and be a child instead of doing paracommando training. :s

its voluntary the kids might be forced by the parents but in my opinion i think they are having fun, except for the blood and everything.
they have been stretching since they started and getting more bendy it might burn but its not a bad burn.
its going to payoff when there older, and there going to stay in great shape. its not a bad thing.
Savannahxglam 4 years ago
Yes, for the ones who make it it will pay off. What about the ones who dont. As I said in another comment, because they dont receive an academic education, those who dont make it end up back in the poverty they tried to escape from by starting gymnastics. Its a vicious circle.

I agree its absolutely awful and sad... But for an example read about arguably China's current best female gymnast... Cheng Fei... because of her success in gymnastics her parents are now not as badly off, I think the government even gave her an apartment and her parents are going to live there (she of course is still training on campus etc) .
lizzle7654 4 years ago
how is it awful?
duncanidaho90 4 years ago
Btw- whoever asked they do do school... I believe its a bit like the Romanian system though... a couple of hours a day beside their training. There is huge pressure on these kids... but if they succeed they also gain a lot (especially for living in China). For an elite champion in China they are paid, given accommodation, good health care etc which beats some of the sweatshops by far. For some of these kids this is a 'good life' and they are brainwashed into thinking its normal.
lizzle7654 4 years ago
its better than a lot of alternatives.
duncanidaho90 4 years ago
They dont receive any education at all. I read an interview with a Chinese gymnast(a top one, I will try to find the interview), and she said they dont receive any education at all. Without success in gymnastics, they have nothing at all to fall back on, as they dont receive education. There isnt time for education when you are training at this level.
ralucagymnast 4 years ago
This is child abuse!!!
noravilla 4 years ago
no its not. its voluntary. gymnastics is like martial arts, theres a lot of discipline. We look at shaolin monks and say wow, thats cool, but we look at these gymnasts and say thats cruel? its cause the chinese r so 1337. they should be given the same amount of awe and respect shaolin monks get, not pitied. and if u say "o, but their girls", then ur being a sexist who thinks girls are weaker physically and weaker willed.
duncanidaho90 4 years ago
thats sad they are forced to bend and so harsh but they love it i guess???idk ouchh
gymnastluvr7 4 years ago
it doesnt hurt. if u stretch at a young age, u get very flexible.
duncanidaho90 4 years ago
yeah.. im a gymnast but i cant do all of that.

I really want to know if these girls go to school. Does anybody know? Do they just train until they retire without stepping a foot in a classroom?
After gymnastics what happens to them? They become coaches without a high school diploma?
quelita28 4 years ago
they go to school. if they stop training, they continue school... if they continue training (which means they're really good) they get to go to university too.

okay well im a gymnast and i train 56 hours a week yes these kids have tough coaches but most coaches are. people say that in australia the coaches wouldnt do all that to us well i can tell you from training at the A.I.S that the top coaches in australia are from china and russia and look how well america and china and russia have done in the olympics australia has never done well its not sick their flexibility bc we are natrualy flexible if we didnt stretch like that then we would lose alot

irishtilly91 4 years ago
dont talk rubbish if all you ignorant ang mohs dont know anything. these kids WANT to get be the olympic champion. not forced to. go watch the documentary dont base it on your own opinion.
leejiayun 4 years ago
What kind of dumb argument is that? Every 5 year old wants to be an olympic champion... It's the responsibility of the parents to make sure their kids grow up healthy. These girls will be in a wheelchair at 30something. A 5 year old can't make his own decisions.
felix2908 4 years ago
dude this is scary! i just found this vid! and the person to comment after me has the same name! hi i'm felix! i don't think they will be in a wheel chair it's look horrible but it just streches their muscles... they'll be pretty fit...i'm sure they carry them the hopsital for check ups.
linkinpark656 4 years ago
sorry, I was commenting some other guy a couple of pages back who said the kids want this for themselves, guess I haven't quite figured this out yet. As to the stretching...this goes way beyond stretching muscles. This is ruining a young kid's spine. They will get serious joint problems in the future. In my opinion a person can do anything he wants to his body, but only if he's old enough to make such a dicision for himself. These kids obviously aren't.
felix2908 4 years ago
yea true... but then again a kid never makes the choice to go to school, the parents do.. so it's up to the parents... the kids were laughing and stuff, it's not as bad as it looks.
linkinpark656 4 years ago
oh plz don't comment my profile you'll make things bad for me....a person will get mad at me and they'll think your me! so yea plz don't.....
linkinpark656 4 years ago
who said that they will be in wheelchair? Many of them are living like us normally in their 40s and 50s. You can't stretch like that because you are not 5!
