I saw this show recently and immediately fell in love with this song. So I came home and watched youtube. I must have watched a dozen versions and this one comes in second in my opinion. To see the most perfectly sung and relaxed version of this song watch Vilhelm Blomgren - I miss the music (IMHO).
@onlywhenimdancing Different opinions, I guess. Just watched Mr. Blomgren's version, and though it's lovely, I personally much prefer Mr. Danieley's version, both in the maturity of his voice and acting, and also in his control and use of vibrato. Stunning song!
BIG fan of the show, and this song in particular - one of Broadway's most clever songs. A great comedic set up in an exposé of what's behind musical inspiration, with more heartbreak subtly infused in the music, timing, and lyrics, a la "Coffee Shop Nights". And the backstory of writing this one for your late writing partner: bittersweet!
It was also written with Jason's voice in mind - what a compliment!
I love how at 2:09 to 2:12, after he sings 'You play a vamp', the pianist plays the first few chords of 'Wilkommen' from Cabaret. I'm assuming it was deliberately done that way and isn't just a coincidence. A wonderful little reference to Kander and Ebb's magnum opus.
Also, fantastic FANTASTIC performance jason you are truly gifted with such a resonant and free sound as well as truthful on stage introspection necessary for such a complex part!
Most people commenting here are cynical and judgmental idealists who THINK they are qualified to judge a true performer! or are too eqotistically inclined and feel they could out perform [we'll look forward to that!] ; sure
+loved you in phantom as raoul!!
Keep it up and we will rejoice when you're on Broadway again!
Alright, people need to stop comparing hs singers with jason danieley, he is a real actor whose made it on broadway not some political hs student who thinks musical theatre is his career, let me tell u as a ny director that never in my career have i found hs kids truly passionate enough for the real deal, this is new york not nj or wee dunk nebraska, ego serves nothing.HS is kids loving themselves on stage and not the art so lets be real here not naive idealists, ps the nj aaron was vocally weak
we're doing this musical too...this song when i'm watching them reherse it makes me sad...1 because it's sad about his wife 2 because he's not even close to this good...
jason is just a top quality guy. no doubts about it. He is a good guy, and good singer, and a fine musician. If you really want the best Jason there is, look at Opposite you, his duets cd with his lovely bride, Marin Mazzie. Their sound is glorious, and the music is fantastic.
Josh Groban is debatably a baritone, depending who you ask. This guy's definitely a tenor, as he has no trouble at all with the high Fs. And he played the title role in Candide.
I'm wondering why Richard Walters put this song in a bass/baritone anthology...
has anyone really hear josh grobin sing and jason? I have, josh is much lower and overpowers songs with exaggerated vibrato, although still an incredibly talented guy. Jason is tender and soft with emotional climaxs complemented by tenor range with tenor II resonance, do your research
Jeez, his voice is so gorgeous! It's smooth, yet meefy, all at the same time! It's just so lovely. He should take over the world one of these days. =]
God, this song makes me cry whenever I listen to it... probably because I'm a musician myself... *sobs* Poor Jason... you just want to hug him and tell him it's all right!
i love his voice--he is such a tenor--i went and saw this musical in new york--my aunt in the musical (karen ziemba) is georgia--after the musical i went backstage and met him--IT WAS SO COOL!!
John Kander is one of the greatest Broadway composers of all time. He wrote this song after Fredd Ebb, his real life collaborator passed away in 2004. This song is actually John's ode to Fred. :'(
I just saw this show tonight... and the whole thing was amazing and funny, but this song is by far my favorite. It's beautiful, and he sings it fabulously. I got to chat with him for a minute at the stage door - he said he loves singing it, too.
DHP was fantastic! I'm a huge DHP fan, and I was just so impressed with his performance. He definitely deserved the Tony! :) Since then I've seen the show 2 more times. The entire cast is amazing, it's a very well put together show. I just love it! Have you seen it?
No, I haven't, but I'd love to! David was adorable climbing the globe in the show. I have a picture of him in my Curtains photo album on my myspace page.
This guy has to be the best male vocalist on Broadway in the last number of years. Saw Curtains a few weeks ago and would see it again. Wonderful entertainment.
Jason was fantastic in the show, which I saw a few days ago. He is appealing and his performance heartfelt. He does very well with Karen Ziemba. He is also in the Carnegie Hall concert version of South Pacific which was aired on PBS (with Reba McEntire, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Alec Baldwin, and Lillias White) available on CD and DVD.
Curtains was fabulous, and "I Miss the Music" is one of the greatest moments in the show. Jason's whole performance was amazing. If you can go see it while the original cast is still there, do it!
Those of you who are new fans of Jason Danieley can hear him as Malcolm on "The Full Monty" cast recording (singing in "Big Ass Rock" and "You Walk With Me", two great songs) and as the title role in the '99 revival recording of "Candide".

I know what you mean. I had never heard of him before and certainly hadn't heard the song, and my gosh, it was so beautiful! My DAD was even crying! And Jason's not too hard on the eyes either ;)
My high school is doing this and boy oh boy do I want to sing this on stage.
