Carve a notch in the top end of your hand drill and tie 2 loops in each end of a cord big enough for your thumbs & put the middle of the cord in the notch. You won't have to walk your hands up & down the spindle.
Yesterday I made a small comment about the sling in another video. Today I saw this video and I'll say anything. I threw the stones differently. I did several laps before dropping. Accelerated to a maximum and then threw the stone. That's how I learned and trained hard to have enough accuracy.
@69penetrator69 I've never tried a lead slug. I think I've read about lead slugs being used by the Romans that had the "catch" in Latin stamped on it!
Dusty, Do you think you could make one for a soldeir who lost his left arm? I would pay you for it of course. I would greatly appreciate it if you could. Stephen, Ohio
Hatch , I think you just figured out foe me what all those round stones I've been finding in Indian camps were !!!So you hang around whacking rocks at stuff and lighting fires. That's not so different from what they used to throw me in Juvie for, when I was a youngblood. If i had been born 30 years later we could have torn the place up together. :~)
@pestleman1951 I've read split ideas on those round balls. Sling ammo, or cooking stones. I suppose I understand both and honestly both are probably right. There's a really neat documentary of paleolithic man in the "fertile crescent" somewhere on youtube. One of the coolest finds I saw was about a half dozen round stones perfect for slinging beside a jawbone knife and antler...like they were all in a bag together at one point. It actually made my eyes get a little misty...
dude, somedays you come home and you are just upset about everything. you became a victim of my mood. i wrote that befor i watched your video. sorry, keep up the good work. i fell like a jackass.
@ThePanTian Worry not, friend! Everyone has a bad mood from time to time. I've got a few ideas floating around that aren't slinging or friction fire, I just haven't been motivated to go out and film lately.
love the video, thanks for showing us how to sling. if you need leather send me a note i have old leather welding coats i dont use anymore you can have them.i am going to make some for me and my little girl( she watched the video with me and she wants one,and wants to learn how to sling) .it a great way to spend time with her and get my wife mad at me at the same time, she thinks a little girl dose not need to learn this type of stuff . shes worng!!!!!
I would agree that this is a weapon viewed by the general public as a toy. I think it would deter some bears but probably tick off most. I imagine a run in with a moose would offer the sling as a deterrent. Although as of yet I cannot hit the broad side of a barn. I made a handful of para cord slings from bushcraftonfire's video. This summer should lend ample time to get'r dialed in. I've already lost too many tennis balls to the snow. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for sharing the art. I've always wondered about it and this is the first great explanation and demonstration I've seen. Appreciate you sharing.
Very nice video, especially the emphasis on safety and your honesty about accuracy. Most other slinging tutorials/introductions forget one or both of these. I've been hit in the head and face 3 times while teaching people to sling (using tennis balls) and I still feel like I can't hit the broad side of a barn after almost 3 years. (Tomorrow will be 3 years exactly.)
@ElSabio0004 People don't think about safety with the sling because people don't take the sling seriously. That's part of the reason I like it so much; people underestimate the powerful tool you're holding.
awesome. very good tutorial and i have seen a few on slings. we made them for a class last semester. my first time ever slinging and i hit the bottle i aimed for the first 3 times but after that i sucked. i guess im only good for three throws... will be doing it more in the summer. i pretended it was my arm and the stone in my hand then let go when i would if it were and my arm was that long. worked out well. thanks and downloading for future reference if you dont mind.
@FixedByDoc Glad you enjoyed it! I don't mind the download. I didn't really talk about release points but you pretty much nailed how it should be done. The sling is basically an extension of your arm.
Thanks for the sling video Dusty, you covered it really well. I think I have some leather here to use if it's not too soft. I'll start slow and see what happens. I guess going barefoot so much has toughened your feet pretty well :-))
You should hook up with the guys over at Smarter Everyday and have them do some high speed shots of you slinging. That would be bad ass. Enjoyed the vid and cant wait to try and make my own sling now.
@hobbexp Seems like I read about making sand based molds in Easter eggs. I haven't tried this but I can imagine it would work pretty good if you had the right mixture.
I remember a "buddy" of mine handing me nunchucks in high school. I gave myself a good crack in the back of my head. I'm thinking that might happen while trying to learn the sling.

The more turnover reached more speed.
Never tried it that way.
