Absolutely wonderful. I've been listening to this (and nearly all her music, from 'Song To A Seagull' onwards) for quarter of a century, the best part of my adult life, and it still thrills and bewitches me. I'm reviewing her records at my blog 'sounds from the funky goat'. If you love Joni, have a read.
This is one of the very first Joni Mitchell songs I ever heard, very late '66 or early '67. I was sure it was really about me. As if. I bought the first copy of song to a seagull sold in Berkeley, having gotten to the record store on Telegraph just as they opened the box. A goddess, then and now.
Joni and Judy are both goddesses. Joni's body of work is nearly unrivaled. She is my favorite. Judy did however write "since you asked" , did the Cohen songs , is beautiful(suite/sweet Judy blue eyes!!!) and way cool too.
@utubehall Well said. I hate it when people pit talented artists against each other. As it happens, the young Joni Mitchell considered Judy Collins a hero, and Judy, for her part, was an early champion of Joni's music. At the 1967 Newport Folk Festival, Judy stood up to Joan Baez and Mimi Farina's mother when Momma Baez, fearing Joni would upstage her babies, tried to shut Joni out. Judy had the guts to threaten that she AND Leonard Cohen would walk out if Joni was not allowed to perform.
In my opinion, the songs of Joni Mitchell and the Beatles are the songs that still will be considered genius in 100 years. Has there ever been a combination of voice and song as Joni Mitchell?
Nice LIVE version of a great old song. I've never heard JC's cover version, which I imagine is ok but hardly "better than" Joni's original rendition. After all, she did write the dad-blamed song, kids. This and several other great songs can be heard on her first LP, "Song to a Seagull," where the performance, mix, and recording is essentially flawless.
I remember when Joni, Judy and Gordon Lightfoot all started out back in the 60s and did radio shows from Los Angeles in the home of Skip Weshner. It was a great thing hearing beautiful music like this in the early years. All three went big time, may they keep going in their later years, I don't see anyone else replacing these gems.
A beautiful songbird voice. I love her voice, her feeling and that album. But really, come on now. Lady Ga Ga is talented, maybe even a genius like Madonna!
Judy did this on "Wildflowers", an album that has never ceased to haunt me. It's only the poor quality of this recording that makes Joni's version even slightly inferior.
@Joy14ever Wash your mouth out, better than the songwriter's performance?-ludicrous, Judy Collins wishes she had half of Joni's talent and authenticity-Collins tends to appeal to mainstream audiences, and she is O.K, no where near Ms Mitchell's league.
Joni was a refreshing antidote to the uninspiring music that most pop stations offered in those days. I love the poetry of her songs and the thoughtfulness she inspired in my youth. I hope there are new songwriters like Joni who are reaching young people today.
When you have musician's like Jimmy Paige and Robert Plant list her as main songwriting influence it's a pretty good indicator that her music is touching a great many people.
So much time, only a moment ago that I became entangled within the imagery of this album. Thanks

@handyman1017 Judy Collins version is on her "Wildflowers" album but it's a little bit "busy" in the arrangment.
Joni's first L.P. is the beautiful album I've ever heard.

used to sing this to my infant son 30 years ago. Even today I don't think he knows why he likes this song.

The correct title is "Michael from Mountains." I'm posting it so this page can be found through a google search.
