You have all these sports people and actors and other so-called "entertainers" earning enough to feed a country and these guys risking their lives and probably got paid very little. Respect.
@brieman2 Believe it or not, only one worker died during construction on the Empire State Building, and that person committed suicide because he had been laid off from construction on the building. So you might say that technically nobody died. They were just that good :)
What's really amazing is that they completed the ESB in only 14 months. No wonder fat cats are so opposed to safety in the workplace-it takes years and years to complete a skyscraper when you care about safety.
What is the matter with you?? This is a public site where people are entitled to their opinions whether right or wrong, but there's no excuse for derogatory and hateful remarks. You"re just making yourself look ridiculous with comments like that.
Those guys were truly amazing. The sad thing is they had to work in those conditions to get decent pay, if they didn`t do it there were thousands of other men with hungry families who`d risk thier lives.
The advances in health and safety have saved countless lives. It`s got to the point, though when you need a working at height permit and a risk assesment to go up a step ladder.
It`s all about the management covering thier arses, so they can`t be sued if you don`t follow safety procedures.
Look at the condition of those guys. There's more fat in one modern lard-ass family than there was on that whole site.
As to the safety issues pointed out in the film (a typical contemporary viewpoint in my opinion)... people back then had PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. They were aware of their surroundings, and didn't rely on management "systems" to look after them (which just serve to make people stop concentrating).
Sure, there've been advances, such as ear defenders, but 80% is bull.
Now I see where the ESB got its aura of fear and doom from. It absorbed it from these workers so they wouldn't have to worry. Believe me, it sucked up enough to last centuries!
@abumpinthenight2 To be fair, these men did not only made America great, they made the world great considering this sort of construction was done across the globe back then.
Alot of Mohawk Indians were hired because they were supposedly not scared of heights.

Most of the workers not 'American' at all but European - Irish, Polish, German, Italian and so on... except for the Native American Mohawk workers.
