@JollyRancherAngel With tampons, just don't go a higher absorbancy than you actually need. That helps prevent overdrying and makes tampons far safer to use. Also, make sure not to leave tampons in for longer than six hours and you should be just fine. Wash your hands before and after inserting your tampon, particuarly if you use the applicatorless type, and you shouldn't have any problems.
@JollyRancherAngel Menstrual cups do not have any of the same negative effects that tampons do. Try finding the Diva Cup it's at local drug stores, or go onto Amazon.com!

Yay cups! In terms of how "green" a cup is vs. tampons- you only need to buy one and you can use it for 10+ YEARS! So for me 5 tampons per day (If I'm lucky) x 5 days = 25 tampons per period x 12 periods per year approx = 300 tampons x 10 years = 3000 tampons! Oh and then think about the applicators, they're usually plastic, not the biodegradable kind. But whatevs, I've been using a cup since I was 15, so I haven't had to buy a tampon in 10 years. I believe I've saved approx $765.
I find funny that girls are grossed out by menstrual cups because pads and tampons are so much more gross! Since I wear the cup I always wonder "why da hell didn't I knew about this years ago!!" And it's no more gross than having some bleached cotton stick up there to soak up *everything*, which it is also just sitting up there and letting the blood "sit in your vagina". It also doesn't leave fibres behind like tampons do which contribute to TSS. Rare, but deadly.
I'd say it's better than wearing a pad and actually sitting in the blood for a couple hours.

I've used one of these for years and have saved so much money, not to mention trees and eliminated the needless landfill waste issue. Do yourself and the planet a huge favour! @ashp3fan 1) It's actually not that big when you fold it up, as you are supposed to do. It does take some getting used to. 2) Yes, you have to wash it out, but it's not a big deal. Depending on how heavy your flow is, you might have to empty it 2-3 times a day, but you might not have to empty it for several days. 3) You can rinse it out each time you empty it, but you should let it sit in boiling water for 10 minutes or so after the end of each period to clean it.

@robsdirtyangel The puppets used are just that - obviously, neither a vulva nor a tampon are actually that big :) And no, this was not an ad for the cup, just a few minutes of fun about a subject that doesn't get talked about too much. Whatever decision you make is fine with me, so long as you are aware that there is more than one option!

I've used one of these for years and have saved so much money, not to mention trees and eliminated the needless landfill waste issue. Do yourself and the planet a huge favour! It might seem wierd or intimidating at first, but after a while it becomes the new norm. Easier for travelling with too, rather than carting around all those packages of tampons and pads.

OK I've never even heard of this before, but it seems really gross, First of all its huge! Second of all wouldn't you have to wash it out??? Which sucks for someone like me who lives at college and shares a bathroom with 20 other girls. EW. How often would that have to be cleaned? And Third of all that looks like it hurts more!

@ashp3fan 1) It's actually not that big when you fold it up, as you are supposed to do. It does take some getting used to. 2) Yes, you have to wash it out, but it's not a big deal. Depending on how heavy your flow is, you might have to empty it 2-3 times a day, but you might not have to empty it for several days. 3) You can rinse it out each time you empty it, but you should let it sit in boiling water for 10 minutes or so after the end of each period to clean it.
