In an interview with Howard Stern on 11/16/2010, Billy Joel admitted that this song was written after having dinner with Mick Jagger and his first wife, Bianca Jagger. Joel told Stern that while writing the lyrics to "Big Shot," he was thinking of Mick singing the song to Bianca. [Source: Wikipedia]
Simple. Billy Joel was one of the best in his genre judged by the number of records he sold, the quality of his singing and lyrics, and his enduring popularity.
Can anyone "objectively" judge ANY piece of music by ANY artist or artists, no matter what the genre - pop, rock, classical, folk, blues, country & western, opera, jazz?? My contention is a 100% confident HELL, YES! For those who doubt, please look up the meanings of any or more than one of the following objective musical terms: beat, rhythm, harmony, melody, lyrics, tempo, number of records sold, how long band recorded/went on concert, how good is band in live concert and NOT only in studio.
@oneohsix106 You and lizzuneverknow are right on the mark!! MUSIC performed by artists like Billy Joel and almost countless others of the "past" put the garbage and noise of today to shame. I refuse to call any song, or a single person/band an "artist" or "artists" if their lyrics outright suck and they couldn't play or sing a single note in tune or pitch.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Rock and Roll >pop+ rap+ hiphop
I swear this song was written for my sister... total big shot attitude... oh what the hell.. I'll throw my brother in there with her... they are twins after all!! :D
drugs abounded in bands then. might want to give him a break on his actions. although a performance without drugs would be better if i had to change this video.
Some friends and I will be covering this song this Friday night. Love it! We will be making it alittle bit more heavy tho. Overall we are hard rock/metal musicians but I`ve been wanting to play Big Shot for awhile.
I take it the girl Billy went out with was a fucking embarrassment. Well, with the Sylvester Stallone of musicians, of course that's not going to set well with him. Nice job letting her know where you stand, Billy! Some girls need that on occasion.
@ClassicTVMan1981X 1. betcha made an account just 2 comment that! 2. the songs are very different in the theme, Elton Johns is soft, the vocals more drawn out, where as Billy Joels is more well... harsh, and the beat is fast, swift. Also eventually they become more different
Must been a good time in the studio. Or the studio (recordlabel) wanted all to belive that there was some good times going on here.. hmhmhm.. in the studio.. there..
My dad didn't do a lot right - but one thing he did do right was raise me on Billy Joel. His music is one of the only good memories I have of my father.
I was just watching mindless behavior's Girl's Talking About, and it is really nothing compared to the songs back then. And don't talk about the crap where "you can't compare them, they are two completely different genres of music" or " this is old music, Its out" because music is music whether it be old or new. Music relies too much on technology nowadays. There very few good ones out there now. But I must admit that occasionaly that auto tune stuff is ok.
@MyDizzyb It's the mainstream that people don't like. It's actuall all of the undercover artists that no one knows about that are amazing. For example, a few European artists like Benjamin Francis Leftwich and Joe Brooks are amazing, and they're all just acoustic kinds of music which I'm sure you will be very interested in. And a bunch of artists used to be so great, but mainstream pretty much took over their career because producers wanted something closer to the music teenagers listen to.
Too bad they didn't include the song ending. What's the point of chopping off the end? We could get this kind of junk from pirates. Don't expect to get that from a record label / VEVO
How could even one dislike this wonderful music? D: It's only 15 out of 1,474 but still. Those 15 obviously don't know good music when they listen to it.
@daveasch I'll agree that Billy Joel is more of an artist than many musical artists today, but do you really want to hold up ‘Big Shot’ as a standard of art? I've heard better lyrics from Katy Perry.
@Saerain Fair. I was actually in the middle of a Billy Joel medley and kind of was referring to his body of work rather than specifically to 'Big Shot'.
Speaking of drummers....Liberty Devito is the drummer. He was a major influence of mine in the 70's. Loved his animation and versatility. I still use some of his "licks" today while playing with my band. Other influences were Steve Ferrone, Mark Craney, Steve Gadd...etc, etc. I can't imagine where you get Gary Busey from Liberty though. Very odd comparison. Don't see it.
I saw Billy in '78 at the Dallas Conv Cntr. He was awesome. I remember this song over all of the others, cuz the song before featured Richie Connata (sax) in which he played a long solo and got a standing "O" for it. So, when they kicked off Big Shot, Billy was all over the place, climbing on top of the piano, running around the stage, and at one point he pointed at Richie on the chorus while singing "You had to be a BIG SHOT, DIDN'T YA?!!!" It was hilarious. One of my favorite concerts.
This song / video is AMAZING .... such heart and soul put into playing and singing it....The drummer really gets into the song, and the cymbals add to the songs musical appeal immensely....and the guy playing the saxaphone does a superb job of it with such a great sound.....Billy sings it splendidly, and the guitarists give such richness to the melody.... my hat is off to the band and Billy, as well as I'd give them all a firm handshake while saying to them >>> job well done guys !!!!!!
while i find Billy Joel to be one of the greatest singers, and songwriters, I am sad to know how this must have hurt Christy, after all this song and many others making fun of her, well, i"ll leave it at that, still love Billy Joel with a sadness too profound to speak.

Thats an all-star band he's got there... Ben Stiller guitarist, Jane Lynch on the bass, Michael Ricahrds on the drums... Incredible.
