I never said to accumulate a big nest egg before your mortgage, just that you save as you go. And that requires you provide a good sized buffer between what you can afford and what you buy. Get it?

But in the real world, people are striving for a better life and owning a home has always been touted as "the American Dream." I confess that I have a modest station in life and yes we are STILL paying our mortgage despite our financial difficulties. My wife worked hard for many years with a company and when they got bought out she got laid off. HOW could she anticipate in 1992 what happened in 2010? Just a fair question.

If you can only make your payments with gov. help, then you shouldn't have been made the loan in the first place. If you CAN make the payments, you don't need government help.

In the here and now, I wouldn't be opposed to the government providing some of my money to incentivize banks to lower your rate, but if you accept that, you'd have to pay higher taxes in a few years, and MY taxes would therefore need to reduce.

Put a little money into lowering rates today, save some mortgages, help to keep the economy afloat and then we ALL benefit by that. I confess that I have a modest station in life and yes we are STILL paying our mortgage despite our financial difficulties. My wife worked hard for many years with a company and when they got bought out she got laid off. HOW could she anticipate in 1992 what happened in 2010? Just a fair question.

But when we could qualify we JUMPED at the chance to get a mortgage. Who wouldn't ? We wanted the dream like anyone else. FYI we still live in a modest home and when my wife lost her job after 10 years it's made it difficult. I'm not saying subsidize lazy bums, just help those trying to work, that's all.

@beerbrain420 And that's why when Clinton created regulations in the 90s to encourage (force) lenders to make loans to lower income families, they weren't helping anybody. If you can only make your payments with gov. help, then you shouldn't have been made the loan in the first place. If you CAN make the payments, you don't need government help.
As for wanting me to pay your mortgage simply because you're having a hard time, I say tough. I worked hard for that money too, and I want to keep it.

@Christobanistan Christo, you're only looking at the issue in the immediate here and now. I gather that you may have a decent job but are not rich (and no shame in that). But if multitudes of people lose their mortgages because of a bad economy, the resulting COLLAPSE in the housing market will reverberate to every aspect of the market. Foreclosed homes = less revenue = MORE depressed economy. Your job might be next and THEN what would you say?

@beerbrain420 There is a middle road, of course. It isn't just do nothing or do everything. The system of forcing banks to make bad loans cuz it makes Democrats feel all fuzzy created the problem in the first place so that needs to be undone.
In the here and now, I wouldn't be opposed to the government providing some of my money to incentivize banks to lower your rate, but if you accept that, you'd have to pay higher taxes in a few years, and MY taxes would therefore need to reduce.

@Christobanistan Well OK Christo that is not an unreasonalble idea. Think of it as an investment. Put a little money into lowering rates today, save some mortgages, help to keep the economy afloat and then we ALL benefit by that. Look, I understand as a working guy you don't want to have to support other people when you need to support yourself. But a little investment will help prop up the WHOLE economy and that helps everyone. Including yourself.
