  • He must have sung this hundreds of times in his career, but each time he put his whole heart and soul into it - he was not Pavarotti, he was Cavaradossi facing death. It never ceases to amaze me how he felt the agony and beauty of the music each and every single time. This is why he is loved and adored all over the world, far more than any other tenor, as great as they may be.

  • @raphael44ify As Bono oft said "Others sing opera, Pavarotti WAS opera!" That is why he "owned" most of the roles he performed--he WAS the character. He didn't just sing or act the role, each character WAS a part of either his own personality or a part of his life. Therefore, he wasn't just "acting out" a part but reliving the part of himself the character represented.-----gee I miss him so!

  • Hehe--judging by his body language and facial expression, one can almost hear him thinking, "Please stop clapping--please don't make me do this again---no, I don't want--no, I don't do--I've bowed my head in acceptance twice already---OH OK--because I love you so much--I do again!"--WHEW---Im exhausted--give me my love!"--lol

  • Il rimpianto della mia vita, è esser nato troppo tardi, e non poter più ascoltare dal vivo quella voce celestiale... spero solo di poterlo sognare un giorno...

  • Watch 5:33 ff., this is how we artists celebrate the long applause! Close your eyes, hear it, feel it, suck it inside, keep it, that is what leads us on the stage!

  • He had the absolute voice and diction!

    Pure beauty!

  • Who the hell coughed at 0:26 ??? he should have gone kicked out!!! LOL

  • i hate them too...:D

  • tthe audience asked for another one..no wonder why..however..INCREDIBLE...:D:D:D

    i sooo adore this man...:D

  • I saw this on an arts channel, and I'd have to say this is my favorite performance of "E lucevan le stelle." The audience gave Pavarotti a three-minute standing ovation! Miss you, Maestro!

  • Incredible appearance and vibrato, we all still love and miss you, Maestro!

  • Bravissimo! Bravissimo Luciano!

  • uhh this is probably one of my favorite arias ever, but I have not seen Tosca.....can someone explain to me why he sang that twice?? Was that rehearsed or was the crowd asking for it again?? believe you me, I DON'T MIND ONE BIT, BEING ABLE TO HEAR EL MAESTRO TWICE IN A ROW:)!!!!!

  • It's an encore - that means, that the crowd applauded and asked him to do the aria again. You should definitely watch this opera, it's usually a sopranos' opera, but Pav stole the performance.. ha-ha!

  • tks:) will do, I have seen El Maestro and Carreras although not together. I have also seen Il Trovatore, Madam Butterfly and hmm can't remember the last one:), in any event I have an audition this Tue for the AZ Opera, small role, excited about the prospects!!!

  • i really think the audience is behaving stupidly!!! i mean you can always show your great apreaciation after the opera is over...you don't have to interrupt the whole performance - its not a consert!!! that's pretty tactless. and you can see in pavarottis face that he really wants the clapping to stop....

  • I think he's just enjoying the ovations, he's too much in the role, that's why he doesn't smile.

  • You say that because you probably don't know the italian culture ! That's the way it goes, if people enjoy things they express it and it's the beauty of those moments !!! Each concert becomes unique ! We are not in an american professional musical where you'll be able to see the exactly same show four times a day ( emotion against perfection ) ... Grande Luciano, Grande Italia ...

  • Yes, I appreciate it and have nothing against clapping in the middle of the opera, and the encore is even better, especially if it's Pavarotti.

You can't expect Italian people showing nothing when their national pride is singing. lol.

  • @mefanoo Yes!!! Grande Luciano, sempre Luciano :-))

Same thing happens here, when I saw him in Tosca at the Met in NY, there was a 5 minute ovation after this aria, people ran down from the balconies to the orchestra level and up to the stage, standing in the aisles :-)) Everyone who was there wanted to get as close to him as possible! Maybe there were a lot of Italians there, also "honorary-Italians" like me, maybe that explains it :-))

Great video, love it! Thank you for sharing :-)

  • il più grande!!!!!

  • Bravo Luciano!

And who says that this is more Domingo's role! I'm not shure :)

  • Best Version of this Song!!! BRAVO Luciano!! BRAVO!

  • Who Gives a Rat's ass, with whom he sang.. Im just glad he was able to share his voice with the Millions who enjoy his music.. Im not an Opera Expert... i know this.. but i dont have to be to enjoy true Talent.. This Man Had Talent..

  • we miss you pav!

  • I also happen to be an artist with integrity, so no amount of money could persuade me to sing beside musical hacks like Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera or Michael Bolton.

  • spgtenor-The Met thinks otherwise! Who cares what you think? You're a NOBODY. I doubt that anyone would try persuading you to do anything no matter how trivial it is. You need a reality check and come to terms with the fact that you're an artist wanna be who is scraping the bottom of the operatic barrel because of your limited talent.

  • Hey, who's making the nonsensical discussion now?!

Show some respect, both of you. This video is for people, who want to enjoy some really God damn good artist, not to make useless insulting of each other about the way you look at things.

So if you don't have anything good or bad to say about this video or Pavarotti himself, then just don't bother yourself with typing at all.

  • My talent may be limited, but I am booked through the holidays doing "trivial" gigs for "trivial" audiences. When was the last time anyone paid to hear your talent?

  • By the way, Pavarotti gave all the money from his "Pavarotti and friends" concerts to charity. So, basically, he didn't do that for money. It didn't persuade him to do the concerts.

And that's why he was different.

P.S. He didn't also sing with Christina Aguilera ever... ;)

  • ILoveTobin- You're right, I apologize for getting caught up in the nonsense. I've never questioned Luciano's heart or generosity, only his judgment. I didn't mind Pav singing with Bono, a talented artist of another genre, but I felt betrayed when the tenor I had looked up to started singing with charlatans that I thought were the cause of the demise of popular music.

  • I used to feel the same, and then I thought: If he did have a giant ego, as some have said, he clearly set it aside to do those fund-raisers.

He humbled himself to the ground performiong with 'artists' he must have known were rubbish even within their own particular genre, but it was for a very good cause.

Who among us would go so far as to risk all credibility on behalf of children we will never even meet?

  • Money couldn't persuade you? I'm LMAO! Your a joke. 1 day of Pav's life was more prolific than 50 of your lifetimes will be. Bottom Line, Mr. Bigshot "artist" - your not worthy to wipe crap off this man's shoes. Go on back & listen to screeching, slobbering Domingo (more your speed.) Pava single-handedly brought opera to the masses. Who cares if you think he "defiled" his artistry by singing with "musical hacks?" He made the world a better place, FED CHILDREN & his music is STILL feeding them.

  • I somehow agree to you, but still - your ignorance is immeasurable. Tell me - what's the use of these insults? I absolutely understand, that you're defending Pavarotti, it's clear, that you're climbing on the bandwagon of this brilliant tenor, maybe so am I, but I think it's useful to listen in other opinion too. Please, don't harm other people with your offensive statements.

  • What is this nonsensical discussion about the encore by the way? Big Pava gave a stellar rendition of this aria and the audience loved it. So they asked for an encore and honored the Maestro.

  • He did the encore because the people, -who he is singing for, really- are the ones who wanted to experience again the utter brilliance of that song, and the way he sang it. Performers could not exist without the people to watch them, remember that. Every time I hear this song, I feel lifted to another place in my mind and heart, so in person, it must have been explosive and the people could not let it go. Do not make this trivial, it means something to people, enjoy it, because it is so special.

  • Just the fact that he would do it again, at 55, at the end of a long opera, and such an aria as this, says alot about the man as well as the singer.

Manys the tenor would not have bothered, or risked it.

  • He was Pavarotti, we can't imagine him different.

  • El más Grande... Lejos. Bravo Luciano!!!

  • 55 year! Super!

  • Bravo !!!! the unique !!! Pavarotti !

  • luciano was wonderful, i love him so much, endless love.

  • He should have done Singing In The Rain or a duet with Sting for the encore to give the world a glimpse of what was to come.

  • That's all you have to say? The Pav sings an aria perfectly TWICE at the end of an exhausting opera and no accolades? I agree an encore in the midst of a story is tasteless and I would have personally left the theatre, but blame the audience for that. Why see a 3 hour opera for one tune, and in Rome no less! Ignorant people stay home!

  • Left the theatre because once in a blue moon an aria was encored because the singer sang it so well?

  • As a singer/actor, I consider a live show(opera, play or musical) a story of continuity that is different from a recital or rock concert. The entirety of the story always supersedes any one performer. I don't mind applause after a well sung aria, but the performer must know when to move on, despite the will of the audience.

  • Okay, that's fair. I agree to an extent, but I think that if a singer is on fire one night and really deserves it; it's fine, provided it doesn't become a regular occurrence (Like Florez encoring every evening at the Met).

  • spgtenor, so I guess what you are saying is that you were never encouraged to sing an encore. Perhaps you did the will of the audience by "moving on". I had attended many, many Met performances of the great Pavarotti's and there were countless times when we attempted to force him into an encore which he sadly denied us. This Roman audience was fortunate beyond belief. Wish he had done them for us at the Met.

Luciano, we miss you and we love you. Looking forward to that encore one day.

  • Your demeanor and lack of understanding is the very reason your artistic endeavors would amount to anything worth most people attention. You seem to be missing the point. As an opera singing you should realize that you're a servant of the audience. It seems Big Pava understood it well while you haven't.

  • A servant to the audience? You obviously heard Pav say that but a performer first serves the music and does it respectfully. Maybe you consider Big Pava singing with Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey and Bryan Adams "artistic" but I do not, and that is where we differ. (I try to picture Nicolai Gedda doing that, but it's laughable).

  • The time of this performance was sure past Pavarotti's prime. And he had become the most popular operatic artist in the world. He sounded great. Performances then, when he wasn't "climbing up" any more, were for audience's entertainment. He was terrific. So why not encore?

  • You bring up a good point-that the audience desperately senses the inevitable, that this may be the last time they'll see their beloved tenor sing at the top of his game. For me, I would prefer the encore to take place after the show, but I understand that's just not how it's done in opera, only every other music form.

  • Past his prime is such a misplaced term here. The voice evolves and so does the artist. While his top might be not be as secure through the C# as it once was, his voice gained more depth in later stages in his career. Pava's voice was still nice and secure through B4 even in his 60s -a good number of top tenors couldn't produce a reliable top B in their career (try Domingo and Carreras for example)

  • No. I am referring to Pava singing at the Met and me paying for it as a genuine opera lover and a benefactor. Which part did you not comprehend? I'd suggest you acquaint yourself with the history of art and its relations to genuine art lovers who sponsor them. With this mentality, I high doubt you'll ever reach to top in your career.

  • I don't consider you to be an art lover nor do I think you have the slightest idea of what genuine art is, you have simply jumped on the Pavarotti bandwagon like many musical neophytes. But since Pav is no longer with us, my guess is that you'll never attend another opera, since there was only one true tenor in history, right?

  • yo no podria estas mas de acuerdo, un tosca unico en interpretacion, joder que era un voz sobrenatural, que pena que ya no podamos oir en vivo mas ese tosca tan bueno que cantaba, en fin asi es la vida.

  • What I like the best about Big Pava is that he never engaged with his critics who mostly unfairly attacked him. Instead, he took center stage and created excellence. That was his way of responding -the right and classy way of responding. And here, he shows that age 55 he STILL was the man!

  • What I like best about 'Big Pava' is his uncomparable voice. You make a good point though, he showed up the critics who were all waiting to to fault him.

  • Dee1153-You're mistaken. The audience, as mesmerized as they were with this superb rendition by Big Pava, wanted an encore. As soon as Pava could refocus after a huge emotional "high" he signaled Maestro Oren that he was ready for the encore. In other words, he honored the audiences request with another superb follow up rendition of this beautiful aria. He was a true servant of the audience as he himself said many times.

  • That's exactly what I said. He motioned to the conductor to do an encore or repeat. I was just mentioning that the 1st time I viewed the video, that I misunderstood what was really happening.

  • Look at the joy on this man's face! They won't let him go... God, how they love him! NEVER a more loved Tenor. He is the most amazing voice of a lifetime. There will NEVER be another one for me.

  • It's exactly the same for me.

  • Am I mistaken, or did Luciano motion to the conductor to do the repeat? I missed this the first time I viewed it!

The audience = just love, pure love for this man. He does no wrong in my eyes. He takes my breath away. He is perfection.

  • At age 55, he was still sublime and at still in command! Bravo Maestro!

  • I think this performance is an excellent answer to his critics who say he could not act, that his voice was past it by the late 80s, and that he ought not to have tackled heavy roles. I think this was beautiful, and obviously so did the audience there.

  • The aging MTV demographics is getting Villazon & Netrebko now...Opera-Lite meets MTV LoL Not a good sign in terms of operatic excellence, but they break every box office record. Form has taken precedence over substance, sadly.

  • Pavarotti was and is my inspiration, But there will be others. Not like Pavarotti, cause we already had one. But there will be others that will be legends too! I hope so ,for the opera profession we need them for are art to survive the MTV culture! I like MTV , but are art requires audience particpation and focus.. and well its hard to get the 17-30 yr olds to focus for 2 hours!! We will need voices like Prices and Pavarotti's to continue this art. And we will have them.

    God bless you Maestro !!

  • I have no words to express my feelings..... Greatest...ever......and forever......

  • this posting looks older then 1990...

  • believe me - it is 1990.

  • I love him!!!!!!!

  • What a treasure! Thanks very much for this...a joy to remember the divine Luciano

  • REMEMBER THIS IS AN OPERA, VIRTUALLY UNHEARD OF WITHIN CONTEXT OF OPERA. EVEN CONDUCTOR OREN WAS AMAZED. Tosca usually is the soprano's opera, however this Time PAVAROTTI Stole the performance. Notice when he acquieced how the applause increased. He sang the encore just as 'FULL OUT' as previously done. Difficult to do he returned into the character when he moved from the wall at the pivotal time. Completion he received almost all the bouquets and another standing OVATION.Ihave on LASER DISC.

  • Bravi maestro!RIP

  • Oh my God, he sung it again?!? Incredible!! Thanks for this post.

  • Excellent post. I appreciate sharing the encore and the applause in between, ppl cut off their clips too early. thanks.
