Been watching Soprano's for the first time with netflix and this "song" was at the end of episode "Stage 5." A really great ending with an important character vowing to never be "soft" again.
John Cooper Clarke had to change a lot of F words to bloody in order to add background music and put on the sopranoes. Check the original version of this poem. To many F's for Sopranoes even!!? You can see him saying the poem to audiences and crackin jokes about changin the words lol... Good stuff. Yeah it fuckin rocks!!!
ME TOO I HAD AN IDEA IT WOULD BE HIM BUT IT TOOK ME AGES TO FIND OUT WAT THE SONG WAS ITS AWSOME IT FINISHED THAT EPISODE BRILLIANTLY WHO WAS ON THE SOPRANOS PRODUCTION TEAM TO SUGGEST A TUNE LIKE THAT !!!!!
This guy is a great & profound poet, the whole of the UK Is one big fucking chicken town,it does not matter which government governs they are just pissing in our soup & we are drinking it.
It took me a few minutes when to find this song and once I did I wanted to post "Thumbs up if you are watching this because of The Sopranos". But you covered it.
In Bangkok, I have to walk through somebody's chickenyard in shantytown just to get to work in the morning. I always think of this song. That's what this town is. Bloody Chickentown. "The bloody punks are bloody daft." Indeed.
Nothing to do with "Chicken factories" in Manchester, funny idea though especially if you've ever been to the city.
Chicken town is just about a smalltime mentality that some people have in any city.
The video definately goes from Oxford road in Manchester out towards Old Trafford, you can see the water of the docks near the end and Salford in the distance.
It's Manchester. The poem (written by John Cooper Clarke) is about Chicken Town (a.k.a. Manchester) where all there used to be were chicken factories. So, case closed: Manchester. Not London. Not New York ;)
Yes it is in Gtr Manchester but it is a separate city, certainly NOT Manchester - a very distinct place (its own cathedral, Catholic bishop etc etc etc).
If you disagree I suggest you tour the pubs of Salford and ask the locals - they'll soon 'convince' you
@cl0ve0il yeah that episode was one of the best. When Phil brings his family to celebrate his dead brother would be 47th birthday. And when he's sitting at the bar with Butchie you know he's serious and done with taking shit from people.
This is Oxford Road station, I know because I caught a train home from there after school for seven years. It's a diesel train leaving platform 3, either to Urmston or Chester. From the viaduct you can see the building that later became the Hacienda, now knocked down. Malazan is right, Chickentown is your chickentown, wherever that is. I've been to Rhode Island, and it's really like that; its also like Leeds or Newark, NJ, or Glasgow or any of the millions of chickentowns.
Indeed -- i know that this video was shot somewhere in the UK, but the scenery in this video looks a lot like it could've been taken from the PATH train between Newark and Jersey City. and not just because the song was used in "The Sopranos" (which is set in North Jersey).
christ why does it have to be anywhere in particular? - it's clearly meant to be YOUR fukin chickentown, inner city, urban, small-town, rural, coast, mountain or wherever...
The song is not, I think you'll find, solely about Manchester. It's about, or at least the way I interpreted it, any town that could be classed as a "Chickentown". Manchester is one, but I don't think the poem applies only to there.
top man a proper geezer who speaks words we cannot speak with such passion of real life's attitudes this man can .. nice work been a fan now for oooooh shit loads of years
someone told me it was "cat steven's" son who chose all the tracks for soprano's, can anyone confirm this theory for me, (whoever it was, had a handle on things for sure!!)
have just seen this guy live not 20 mins ago (citedel st helens)small venue was no more than 3 feet away he finished off with a new version of beesly st (callled beasly boulevard) and the original chicken town, great gig.long live jcc.
No, it's definitely coming West out of Oxford road, you can see Whitworth street and the station itself hasn't changed. There seems to be a bit missing inbetween the Hacienda and Castlefiled though, it jumps at least a few hundred yards.
Not in my opinion because at 55 seconds you notice the Hacienda nightclub - which is intersection between whitworth street west and oxford st/rd, since the train has travelled westbound for 55 secs and oxford road station is further west than the hacienda, this makes it more likely to be Piccadilly station ( outside platforms ). You will also notice 4 at the beginning this probably indicates further proof of piccadilly outside platforms. Hope this helps :D
