Good for these guys. This is a sound that is worth something; timeless, original, inventive and epic. I hope someone finds this music a couple hundred years from now, if people are still around.
@Spenc2010 i know. This is the first time ive seen this clip, but I've heard this song a hundred time. I'm waiting for Phil to finish the drum rolls and had this turned all the way up, ready to turn it down before that last crescendo. Then AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH and Peter's face...scared the hell outta me! Funny, though
@owenbb505 Man...I agree with you and Spenc2010 here. At the end I was thinking, "What the heck is Peter doing?!" Scary how he makes that face, and I hear nothing coming out of his mouth. Whoa...
The comments presented online are often inflamatory, purely subjective and mostly are not well informed. I seriously doubt that the authors of such really like music at all. They are here to be hateful. Congrats, you've done it. Now, go spread your poison somewhere else.
My first Genesis was Misunderstanding in 78. My first Peter Gabriel was Sledgehammer on MTV. I thought it was awesome, where'd he come from out of nowhere? I just now found out about this. This is pure shit. I don't mean good shit, I mean excrement, browning the seat of your pants in public, no one should ever see.
@FightForUtopia Haha, fair enough. I'm not going to try and convince you otherwise, but if Idol had visionary performers like Peter Gabriel and Genesis on the show I'd be getting satellite on in a heartbeat.
@beaudeeley This is my third time here and it's starting to grow on me. I still like Phil better, though. The top things holding me back now is the landing strip on his head and the tambourine cyclops eye. Wth is that about? It's like something I'd do for attention when I was 2.
@FightForUtopia Glad to hear, it took me about 2 years to fully appeciate the early Genesis sound. I really wasn't too keen on them at first.
I guess you have to try and put yourself back to the time it was released; Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson et al weren't around yet and this type of theatrical performance was very new (Bowie was doing it too). There's no doubt the theatrics have dated a bit but do give the studio recording of this song a couple of listens for comaprison.
@beaudeeley Well, the first time I was on this one, I'd already been to two or three others that I really hated, and I guess I was in that mood when I first got to this one and hated it before I even heard it. I've given a few more of their songs a try since then, and this one is still the only one I don't hate so far. I went to one version of this that had the lyrics and I like what it's about. I'm into the gods and stuff. I wish he was saying the words clear enough for me to hear.
@FightForUtopia Your mother lets you out of the house? A Lady GAGA fan I bet. When you dress up as GAGA, does the 5 o'clock shadow show or does the makeup cover it? What a douche.
@urbalgerbil But was this era Genesis, popular in its own time? Wasn't DISCO and the likes of Bay City Rollers, Leo Sawyer and others, dominating the radio airways?
You'll be surprised the quality of music these days. (like Genesis back then, followed by very few)
@vivelavidarocka Early Peter Gabriel Genesis wasn't popular anywhere except Italy. They were big in Italy where there was a big progressive rock movement. They were just starting to get popular in the US with Lamb Lies Down when Gabriel left. They hardly skipped a beat though because Phil Collins took over vocals on one of their best albums ever "Trick of the Tail" & then "Wind & Wuthering" which was also quite excellent. After "Wind & Wuthering" they became more of a Pop-Prog group.
I remember when I saw this performance on the Midnight Special, I thought to myself, "Who the HELL are these guys?????" First time I ever heard of Genesis, and it took me two years to find any records by them... Gabriel-era Genesis has been my favorite band of all time since that night!
@StoneyMcJuicyBuds I bet my dog "thinks" exactly the same way when it hears Prog. But at least is cute seeing how it turns its face in both directions to express its ignorance. You instead. have the audacity to write it.
@jeffthrow6892 We wish they had. And maybe they could have learned what real music was all about and give up their dreams of creating a rock band. One that has been screwing with our ears for decades...(even if you didn't wanted to listen but couldn't help it)
@vivelavidarocka Phil Collins played in Live Aid in the UK and the USA exactly at the same time by using Concorde plane. Think about the jet lag. He is definitely a good drummer and a good singer. Also, after Peter Gabriel left Genesis there were at least 3 excellent albums with Phil.
This is the song that got me into early Genesis. I would love to have heard them do this during the Seconds Out period with Collins singing. Does anyone know if this was played after Peter's departure?
@HumblePie76 Why would you want that?...out of the several "Gabriel's songs" The Carpet Crawlers is the only one Collins does a decent job, the others, he totally kills the atmosphere of the composition. His voice just doesn't have the same theatrical input of Peter's or maybe are just not made for his vocal style.
@vivelavidarocka I really enjoy the Seconds Out era. I actually enjoy Phil singing Peter's songs. But I enjoy all of the Genesis prog rock. Guess you're a militant Gabriel fan?
@Alpha7xxx I'm a Prog music militant. Something this band used to do even with Collins's first three albums as the lead singer. My name inspired by Coldplay? No way. That"s Viva La Vida. Mine means Live The Rock Style of Life. I just added an A at the end of Rock (like Vive La Vida Loca. Ricky Martin's song...Lol)
I think I responded to this, but somehow it disappeared. Anyways. I kind of enjoy Phil's solo efforts. Quality love ballads to be with you girlfriend. But in Genesis...?
@MaxtheMetalhead Yes, it does and that's why Phil was able to play in several different projects together with Eric Clapton and other famous musicians.
@MaxtheMetalhead Why does everyone always bring Neil Peart into the argument? He is great, but Rush was a 3rd generation Canadian prog rock outfit with roots in hard rock.
I can't say I'm a fan of Rush, but Neil Peart has technical prowess. No argument there. I think the real discussion would be Collins vs Bruford vs Alan White vs whoever played for Soft Machine?
This is the night, the show, and the performance that changed my life. I was in Sunriver, Oregon visiting my cousins, and we happened to turn this on. Cousin Scott was nearly asleep but I was transfixed. When I got home I bought Selling England by the Pound, and two days later added Foxtrot, Musical Box, and Trespass. The emotion, the precision, the percussion that accentuated the melodies rather than "putting up a steady beat" changed the way I viewed music. That night I became a proghead.
We need a weekly show like Midnight Special devoted to live performances. Oh, and not on a fringe cable network. The music industry wonders why it is in the pits. It's only half because people have been stealing the music. The other half is the decline of radio and no institution supporting a broad concept of "pop" music. While we're at it, Google needs to get serious about sharing Youtube music video advertising revenue with the music makers.
Peter Gabriel at his strangest (but in a good way!) Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. Saw them perform this in Kansas City ages ago. Totally shocking & unexpected theatrics. I loved every second of the concerts - and feel quite privledged to have seen Genesis "in the day"...
@skeetnice Phil Collins is actually the drummer you see in this video. After Peter Gabriel left the group, Phil took over as the lead vocalist. Hope that helps. P.S. I know it
Yawn - yes we know it's good - yes, yes Gabriel was a total legend, one of a kind, king for........ well king for how long? At the end of the day (it gets dark.....) and....Phil Collins still plays music, is still good and oh my giddy frack what's that?? He was the drummer for Genesis, without whom Gabriel and co would not have rocked perhaps as much as they did in their glory day....how quickly people forget that they all made the band what it was - otherwise it would have been called Gabriel
They were good, even back then. People walked out though because they wanted to hear some 'proper' rock and roll! Everybody wanted them to play 'The Knife' Which was the most rock and roll they did at the time. Hope I'm getting the dates right! The pub was The Red Lion, Leytonstone. Renamed now. By St John's church. Listening to Watcher of the Skys makes me tearful now! Very happy LSD-filled days indeed!
wow what a thrill it must have been to see them live, unlike today when all there is are a bunch of fucking monkeys jumping around on stage, sad to see music deteriorating today
@guanteco@icepickphil There is no Mellotron in this particular version, it's all played on a Hammond B3 organ.
You can see it quite clearly in the video.
On the studio album it's definitely a mellotron, because a mellotron has an unmistakeable unique sound, because it was technically the first sampler, and used loops of audio tape to sound like Violins or Flutes, (Like the Mellotron Flute intro to Strawberry Fields forever)
But if you go to 0:55 you can see he's left-handing what appears to be a Mellotron, and presumably mirroring the part on the Hammond with his right hand.
There's some editing of some sort going on as at 6:04 his playing on the Hammond doesn't quite match what is heard also. Watched it so many times cos I love this video so much!
@batfink1976 Possibly for the first 1:30 seconds, but after that it sounds all B3, and at 6:04 yea, there's an entire small section in the where the keyboard does the signature riff and his hand doesn't even move.
I'm starting to think someone put this together from more than one video, because at that 6:04 even what Phil Collins is playing doesn't quite match the audio.
Blood 2010-2011 still Genesis, still evolving.....This is,was the prog trend, So! The cumulative works of the individuals form into an Opus of extraordinary proportion. Planned ? No! Genesis. Least that@s what I got :-) Each and every album of Genesis in original or as individuals.
I was 11 at the time but totally missed out on Genesis until college. Sorry but I grew up in New Jersey and it was a state requirement to put all your rock focus into Bruce Springsteen. Thankfully going to college in Philadelphia opened eyes to many more music alertnatives and more diverse radio stations.
@adnseb1234 I highly recommend going to see the tribute band The Musical Box, if you have not already. I saw them last night in Milwaukee and the show was incredible. Peace.
Musical Box will be at the Keswick Theatre in Philly for two November shows. Unfortunately we have plans for that weekend already. I will be sure to track them for future shows. Was show 100% Lamb Lies Down?
@adnseb1234 At times I forgot that I was not seeing Genesis perform. Denis Gagné did a perfect job. He had P. G.'s mannerisms to a T. I have been spending my morning searching shows for comparison. I am blown away!! Peace, my Brother.
Good music is Good music...just because something is top 40 don't mean it's shit. Look at The Beatles...almost everything they did was Top 40 and they are considered to be the most highly prolific, celebrated and copied band ever. I like songs like this and I liked their top 40 stuff.
Soundtrack to a silent movie, I agree, but progressive? In 1923 perhaps, but Majorly dated here, Riding the trend of Kiss, New York Dolls, Genesis, etc. - 1973 that is all.
@EB3EFFECTSFAB You're in the wrong ballpark. How can they be riding the trend of Kiss, who was just forming, the New York Dolls who rode the trend of MC5 and the Stooges...and above all how did they ride the trend of themselves?
Music is still music...this is incredible and completely original and innovative.
Ok am I the only one that has watched this over and over? I was 11 years old when this as performed and too young to appreciate this at the time. Thanks to all in college who turned me on to the older Genesis albums.
@adnseb1234 No..I come back to listen to this "over and over" every so often. I was 12 and this was my first "midnight special." I bought all the Genesis albums with Peter Gabriel. This and fifth of firth are my favorite Genesis tunes.
@macsnafu. I was a big fan from 71 onwards , and all the guys at school who were fellow proggies like me, were interested in all the band members. I guess they were aspiring musicians like me ( my mates) and so we were interested in the drummer and bass player etc, maybe a lot of non musicians were too focussed on PG. Cheers.
@maxwellmaxter How much is it to cross the bridge? I want to pay the toll quickly so you can hobble back under the overpass. Will it make you sad to know that Kurt Cobain was a King Crimson fan??? Because he was...and Butch Vig too. So go cry now and come up with more cute word puzzles
@JohnnyTronny19841 thanks, im glad you liked my acronymn. peter gabriele came of age and figured how to put out uplifting fun songs, im a liker of his later contributions. this stuff is as sad and depressing as the cure. kurt cobain realized the catchyness of my sharonna , maybe the king crimson ate at him and led to his sad demise. there is no melody in this music its platonic almost monotone. to cross the bridge is free how are you ganna hobble me? <-------poem
@kyla2112 ewwww two shay!!! on the top 40 bit, no i dont buy that ,the best of many artists is on the bside. p gabriele cut his teeth here, his best was yet to come. the melodies he later put forth are uplifting and dramatic. my fav stuff isnt ever played on the radio. styx for example. when is the last or first time you ever heard castle walls on the radio? check it out, its there best musical accomp.go back and get on the cures page. im not here talkin "shit" im tellin my opinion. shokthmnky
@benlorenc Simple, people who were a) impatient or b) didn't like complex lyrics and/or musical arrangements didn't like this new, amazing sound and simply labelled it "pretentious" and "pompous" in order to justify their so-called "crusade" against what was a flourishing art form. From this crusade we got punk and overly simplified pop music (in other words, simple but mind-numbing products that eclipsed the intellectually stimulating prog).
Shame the camera spent so long on PG and pretty much ignored the rest of the band. Nothing of Rutherford, and the others got a fleeting camera pan. Great stuff though. Love Foxtrot, play it a lot!
@TheJollyjeweller Well, Gabriel was the focus in the early band. He was up there in costumes and being weird, while the rest of the band was just there to do the music. Steve Hackett's sitting down most of the time! It's no wonder the media thought Genesis was finished when PG left.
I remember seing this on the midnight special..well no..because as soon as i saw the get up that Gabriel was wearing i changed the channel right away saying to myself "Oh no not another KISS" rip off" i hated and hate kiss..little that i knew that it was Genessis one of my favorite groups! anyways latter i heard the song on the radio and i was hooked for life...
when I watch on tv E.T by katy perry, many LITTLE STUPIDS said than his mother (WTF) lady gaga had invented the alien look, ohh I´m sorry Peter Gabriel did it before, the only watcher of the skies He kick lady gaga's ass
Great stuff - thanks for posting! Was a huge Genesis fan growing up, but too young to see any of the Gabriel era clips. This was their greatest line-up.
They were a fantastic combination of heavyweights. Peter Gabriel was/is a true artist and visionary: brilliant, fearless, and a little bit crazy! He still embodies these characteristics, all of which are requisite for his promotion of justice for peoples around the globe.... check out witness dot org !
Simply a dramatic theatrical showman, limited effort with massive results. Not to forget one of the original creators of video animation music videos. Moved on to discover, encourage and promote artists across the globe. Without the will to self promote and grudgingly accepting worldwide adulation, Peter has evolved over the years into a Man I believe we can fully endorse. He proves that we can all continue to grow as human beings to the end of our days. And his music is off the charts. Thanks
How does this manage to mesmerize and hypnotize you, take you to another place, release endorphins and make you SMILE? I just love early genesis and Peter Gabriel!
Makes contemporary bands LOOK and SOUND pretty damn boring, huh?
I actually fell asleep during this when it first played. What a dodo! My brother stayed awake, and has always been a bigger Genesis fan since. I love how Gabriel is so in character, whatever the character IS. Was he a Watcher, of Biblical renown???? Great recording of the drums, a rarity for those days.

What kind of keyboard is being used in this song? Is it a melotron?
icepickphil 4 months ago
@icepickphil Yes, is a mellotron, hard work!
guanteco 4 months ago
@guanteco @icepickphil There is no Mellotron in this particular version, it's all played on a Hammond B3 organ.
SpocksToupee 3 months ago
@SpocksToupee
But if you go to 0:55 you can see he's left-handing what appears to be a Mellotron, and presumably mirroring the part on the Hammond with his right hand.
There's some editing of some sort going on as at 6:04 his playing on the Hammond doesn't quite match what is heard also. Watched it so many times cos I love this video so much!
batfink1976 3 months ago
@batfink1976 Possibly for the first 1:30 seconds, but after that it sounds all B3, and at 6:04 yea, there's an entire small section in the where the keyboard does the signature riff and his hand doesn't even move.
I'm starting to think someone put this together from more than one video, because at that 6:04 even what Phil Collins is playing doesn't quite match the audio.
SpocksToupee 3 months ago
The intro sounds like Dark Link.

As mesmerizing as Gabriel is here, they still could have shown more of the rest of the band.

I don't think Gabriel is acting in this. He really is an alien. No human could have come up with that kind of stage presence.

Peace.

@thefeepy

EB3EFFECTSFAB 4 months ago
@EB3EFFECTSFAB You're in the wrong ballpark. How can they be riding the trend of Kiss, who was just forming, the New York Dolls who rode the trend of MC5 and the Stooges...and above all how did they ride the trend of themselves?
Music is still music...this is incredible and completely original and innovative.

JohnnyTronny19841 5 months ago 2
@JohnnyTronny19841 thanks, im glad you liked my acronymn. peter gabriele came of age and figured how to put out uplifting fun songs, im a liker of his later contributions. this stuff is as sad and depressing as the cure. kurt cobain realized the catchyness of my sharonna , maybe the king crimson ate at him and led to his sad demise. there is no melody in this music its platonic almost monotone. to cross the bridge is free how are you ganna hobble me? <-------poem

benlorenc 5 months ago 31
@benlorenc Hey it's still out there. It has mostly gone metal. Check out bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X or Pain of Salvation.
wolfgange63 4 months ago

TheJollyjeweller 5 months ago
@TheJollyjeweller Well, Gabriel was the focus in the early band. He was up there in costumes and being weird, while the rest of the band was just there to do the music. Steve Hackett's sitting down most of the time! It's no wonder the media thought Genesis was finished when PG left.

Thanks
