i like Avatar, but Cameron's argument is invalid. the reason why ten year old children can follow along with the story is because theyve already been introduced to the same story over and over and over. im pretty sure ten year olds (at least a number of them) have seen pocahontas, ferngully, atlantis: the lost empire, and alot of indigenous tribe plots from tv shows. its not as complex as James Cameron is making it out to be

Cameron is a smart guy and has compelling passion, but his argument that Avatar isn't less intellectual consisted of him assigning it all kinds of qualities, none of which are intellectual. The idea that in the internet age people might find the notion of an avatar that acts independent of one's body challenging goes to show he doesn't think much of the average viewer.
It's all about what your into..... Some people are into shared conciouness between their body & another superior body, some people are into shared conciousness with other people in a dreamscape, some people have enough room in their brain for both....... I think they're happier that they don't have to make dumb decissions like which one sucks just cuz the other one's the slightest bit more creative....

but it still grossed 2,9 billions in theatres.His formula was innovative and it blew people away.The dvd sales were as equally impressive as the number i quoted. Inception had about 4 tangled storylines, only one was really neccessary for the movie to function.but it relies on an overload of special effects to tell the story actors couldn't.
Avatar works on multiple levels? Inception has literally multiple levels! And you can't compare one with the other, it's like comparing Star Wars with the James Bond movies...
Avatar on the whole needed much more imagination than Inception...Inception was just multilayered in the narrative, Avatar was imaginations gone amazing, ok...I enjoyed both the movies,
James Cameron kind of nailed this one. Avatar can be understood by people of all ages, but Inception can only fully be enjoyed by a more mature audience. Because Avatar's message, theme, etc is aimed at a wider variety of people, the story and characters are less complex. However, Inception is a bit harder to understand, but when figured out, has a very rewarding experience. BTW, I own both films and watch them regularly :P
I like the way Cameron answers the questions. The interviewer clearly wants him to compare himself to Nolan (and is intimating that he thinks Inception is better, both sucked in my opinion), and Cameron is too smart to go down that road.
What made avatar not a good movie in my book is that it lacked surprise. i knew exactly what was going to happen from the beginning of the movie. I loved the effects and the action, but when a plot gets resolved by coincidence, a movie fails. But you can't compare these movies...

So while message makes all us feel good, the story that presented that message, was incredibly bland for a movie that got so much Oscar talk. I liked both Inception and Avatar. But compairing them is like night and day. Avatar was in 3D, Inception was not. Avatar had a universal story (the environment/love) and Inception was more of a personal story (your dreams).
Plus Avatar had Mech Suits, Future helicopters and glowing jungle. I love both Inception and Avatar but visually Avatar has much more artistic quality.

when the jason levitt character say that don't try to imagine a pink elephant to watanabe(that's the most basic example for ocd, if wikipedia is your source) and testing out ellen page with drawing a maze is amaturisticly silly, the shots are stale and theres no defining cinematical moment except for the last shot, you can't compare that to the moment whe Jake first got his feet in Avatar.

Just because a movie is confusing and makes no sense doesn't make it good. I thought inception was awful, the drab boring colors, the predictable plot twists, the poor attempt at action scenes, and countless characters who the audience just didnt care about. Whereas i thought avatar was amazing, despite the fact that it was a relatively simple concept. It had beautiful visuals, a meaningful and detailed story that people of all ages could understand and characters that the audience cared about.

Avatar was for me spiritual and moral boost. I won´t ever tolerate stupid ignorance which make humans focus they´re mind on only 2-D medias so much that they start losing there ability to use they´re all senses to survive. Evolution will select people who live in 2-D dreamworld as losers. People who get 3-D emotionally and psychologically like Cameron and me and many others will have better chance of getting there life in order and have success.

James Cameron thinks that Avatar is a challenging story... Avatar is basically Pocahontas with giant blue people. Cameron is a smart guy and has compelling passion, but his argument that Avatar isn't less intellectual consisted of him assigning it all kinds of qualities, none of which are intellectual. The idea that in the internet age people might find the notion of an avatar that acts independent of one's body challenging goes to show he doesn't think much of the average viewer.

yh well sometimes you can start with a fantastic visuals and add a compelling storyline later.Its not unconventional.As a painter I work on texture , shape, volume , assemblage and story telling at completely different stages and I know most random art lovers will only appreciate how "pretty" the end result is when the story is a part of the painting. Please...Inception, like all Nolan's movies, is pseudo-intellectual pop guff for 10 years olds who think The Dark Knight is the greatest film ever made and never heard of Fellini or Kubric in their short lives. Nolan is simply the director du jour for fanboy nerds. Avatar WAS a smarter film than Inception ...and without the pretension. Inception falls completely apart when analysed. but it still grossed 2,9 billions in theatres.His formula was innovative and it blew people away.The dvd sales were as equally impressive as the number i quoted. Inception had about 4 tangled storylines, only one was really neccessary for the movie to function.but it relies on an overload of special effects to tell the story actors couldn't.

James Cameron kind of nailed this one. Avatar can be understood by people of all ages, but Inception can only fully be enjoyed by a more mature audience. Because Avatar's message, theme, etc is aimed at a wider variety of people, the story and characters are less complex. However, Inception is a bit harder to understand, but when figured out, has a very rewarding experience. BTW, I own both films and watch them regularly :P

What made avatar not a good movie in my book is that it lacked surprise. i knew exactly what was going to happen from the beginning of the movie. I loved the effects and the action, but when a plot gets resolved by coincidence, a movie fails. But you can't compare these movies...

So while message makes all us feel good, the story that presented that message, was incredibly bland for a movie that got so much Oscar talk. But in all fairness, all those nominations were for it's visuals, sound, etc. not it's story.

I liked both Inception and Avatar. But compairing them is like night and day. Avatar was in 3D, Inception was not. Avatar had a universal story (the environment/love) and Inception was more of a personal story (your dreams).

Actually, he defended himself quite well. It's amusing to me that most of the anti-Cameron sentiments come from people who want to appear as though they are "smarter" than 3D. I know countless people who liked Avatar at first, but then changed their opinion of the movie simply because so many people went to see it. when the jason levitt character say that don't try to imagine a pink elephant to watanabe(that's the most basic example for ocd, if wikipedia is your source) and testing out ellen page with drawing a maze is amaturisticly silly, the shots are stale and theres no defining cinematical moment except for the last shot, you can't compare that to the moment whe Jake first got his feet in Avatar.

Just because a movie is confusing and makes no sense doesn't make it good. I thought inception was awful, the drab boring colors, the predictable plot twists, the poor attempt at action scenes, and countless characters who the audience just didnt care about. Whereas i thought avatar was amazing, despite the fact that it was a relatively simple concept. It had beautiful visuals, a meaningful and detailed story that people of all ages could understand and characters that the audience cared about.

Pocahontas WAS TRUE HISTORICAL CHARACTER. It needs to be told again and again. I have to agree with Cameron though. A filmmaker should be able to tell his tale the way he wants. Hell, there are filmmakers don't use color and/or sound in some of their work. This idea seems to go over a lot of people's heads. Limiting yourself isn't a very good way to be creative.
Can't wait for Nolan to film the next Batman with nothing but IMAX cameras.

James Cameron thinks that Avatar is a challenging story... Avatar is basically Pocahontas with giant blue people. Avatar's mindless story does not even compare with Nolan's intricate depiction of the human subconsciousness. Inception made audiences question the threads of reality! Avatar only made a couple of people cry over some burning tree. Plus, Inception's visuals were way more innovative than Avatar's. Just look at hallway scene! Also, Nolan films in 2D because he isn't greedy like Cameron
