@gdfsob Good idea. Although Diesel fuel was originally supposed to be made from peanut oil, back in the day. If today's biodiesel can ever cost less than oil based diesel, the railroads will definitely be interested. Its all about cost savings. Your ideas are excellent, but at the moment fossil fuels still cost less
@gdfsob Because maintaining steam engines require demanding labor. They have to be lubricated every two hours. Getting them started when they're stone cold takes hours of work. Diesel avoids all of those problems. Steamers are still the best in awesomeness, though
@gdfsob I agree with you totally. Another point also would be that the UPRR would need and could use less locomotives because if they do in fact In the future do what you said, and create a new "Big Boy" locomotive you only need one of those to pull 150 cars when you need 2 or 4 Diesel locomotives to hall 150 cars, Because 1 Big Boy has 16 drivers and one diesel only has 12. So it would be even more efficient by no having to build so many locomotives.
@gdfsob Because, Virginia, the labor cost to maintain a steam engine was one of the main reasons that diesels won out over steam originally !! Also, coal is a major source of hydrocarbon pollution.
Unfortunately the camera follows the train and the frame rate is poor, making calculating the speed very difficult. But it is definitely NOT going 100 mph as a comment stated below.
@8534951 I can not tell you the speed as i was not there.but i can tell you that trains can;t just go as fast as they want to they are governed by the law and speed limits just as cars are.Now when they are way out in the middle of now where i don't see what could keep them from putting their foot in the carb so to speak.Track speed means as fast as the speed limit is on the track they are on if not mistaken?Thanks..
i got to pilot this train from san antonio to kyle. ya there are so many people who wanted to pilot that they (mngt) decided to break up the trip from san antonio to austin into quarters. i thought that was freakin awesome.. being that i hired out 2005 and they called me off the x-tra brd and an engineer off the x-tra brd as well. we took our small trip and dead headed back to tie up. the second car behind the engine has parts and lathe machines/ welders to make thier parts on the go. hi ball
Great shot!! UP used to run their steam locos upwards of 90 mph, so they have no problem running at authorized track speed! May I suggest you check the videos of ( you tube ) SkipW . He is with the UP steam crew, and has some great video here!
I seen the 844 and sat in the engineers seat of it at the Union Station in Denver, Colorado. The piece of machinery is a living legend and has a mind of it's own! Great shot and five stars.
oh hay i sat in the driver seat of her sister 833 where she sits she sits at ogden uinon staion it rocet i think that where the turbine is I think so if you go there and its not there im sorry plus i said i think
I don't think she could beat Mallard. IF she did, then she'd be in pieces. Her max. permitted speed is 80 mph, but her stats show that she is capable of going 110 MPH!
Well, that still beats some high speed records for some steam locomotives. That's also 7 mph than a modern F40PH. I can't belive a 1944 steam locomotive that has been running for more than 60 years can beat a modern 1972 F40PH that's been running for just a little over 30 years.
I love steam too, I'm a railroader in Colorado and have to say all our steam ideas came from Europe, come to think of it so did I! English, Scottish, German and French makes me American! I love it all.
Great video and it was really good that you left the comments on after it had gone by. I should imagine seeing something like that must take a lot of people aback (and not just kids either!)
Ah! Back in the day when there was NO DIESEL behind her!

lol, its america's newest and upgraded version of the Amtrak
gamingguy492 4 years ago
if we had steam on Amtrak you'd have to make your seat reservations months in advance - steam represents how they used to run a railroad
Wonkawillie77 4 years ago
You had to book your seat months in advance back then because it was a time when everybody took the train.
Flying, now days, isn't any different.
