A very great movie....one of my favorites. Everyone here can love The Godfather up your buttcracks but this is one of many movies that I can very much relate to. The people of New York deserve to die.
I cannot believe that Paul Schrader did not receive an Oscar nomination for best screenplay for his work on Taxi Driver. There were so many great films that year including Rocky, Network, All The President's Men, Carrie, Marathon Man etc.
I'm only 15 and I love movies like this but never seen an older trailer, wow, trailers now a days are so different not saying its a good or bad thing, just saying.
@dyanamo281 Well I certainly recognize that voice as I've heard it on about a hundred or so other movie trailers, particularly from around this flicks era, and I'm sure many other people who've seen plenty of movie trailers of this era are familiar with it too,.. . but not the speakers name and so forth. The identities of these voice over guys were pretty much kept a mystery .
"preparing himself for the only moment in his life......that will ever mean anything." that line sends a chill down my spine every time. Classic trailer to a classic film. No other film has ever spoke to me quite the way this one has. My all time favorite drama! One of a kind.
I still don't understand how AFI could call Travis Bickle a villain. I didn't see him as a villain. Maybe he was a bit on the crazy side but I saw a hero in him. He shot the criminal in the store holdup and saved the prostitute's life from her pimp. He was just killing the scums of the earth. He didn't kill good people so I don't understand how people can see him as a villain.
@StikWitClassics That question represents all the irony in the movie. Basically, there's no distinction. He acted like a psycho when trying to assassinate Palantine, but was not fast enough. Had he succeeded, however, he would have been deemed a villain. But when he acts like a psycho to save Iris, he's deemed a hero, even though both acts were purely psychotic.
Sorry if I got any names wrong; it's been a while since I've seen the movie.
@StikWitClassics Even though the consequences of his actions were relatively positive, he was still a very disturbed man who acted violently and fantasized about "punishing" society. His character could have very well been an antagonist in another movie.
@StikWitClassics Travis Bickle would really be considered an anti-hero. He did bad things for the sake of good, like illegally buying all of those guns to kill all of those pimps to save Iris from the prostitute life.
Ah yes, the good old days, when a dark and serious movie like 'Taxi Driver' could find a mass adult audience, rather than the moronic Bad Boys/Charlie's Angels movie culture we're now faced with
On every street in every city in this country there's a nobody who dreams of being a somebody." Very similar to the Rocky (1976) tagline which ironically came out the same year.
@ozziemckenzie It seems like Scorsese's new De Niro is of course LeoDicaprio. Id love to see the two come back together though.... with Pesci of course.
