Love Kaki king! Yes I no this isn't HER song but it's HER version of it!! And I think she does this song justice! I bet at leat 50 % of people who have seen agust rush now no about Michael hedges. Because of kaki king!!
@huntergruntetr123 It's good that she is turning people on to the beast which is Michael Hedges. Her cover sounds just as bad as any other normal human would play it though sadly.
I hate kaki kings version of this great tune!for example she totally fucks up the intro. hedges plays the intro with tricky rhythmical finesse. this is what makes the intro special and interesting. she didn´t get that rhythm at all and plays it more like wishy washy and totally boring! so she does the whole song. she allways strums all six strings so that there is no melody and no base line. dynamics also is a foreign word to her.
so i beg you people, listen to the original of MICHAEL HEDGES
right on, another who see's mediocrity for what it really is. I've tried to appreciate king's music, but she gives me a headache rather quickly. She says her main inspiration is Preston Reed?, well just go listen to how it's really done folks, yet Reed doesn't get the kind of recognition king gets, i have a theory on that for which i will keep to myself. Suffice to say, very few out there can cover a master(obviously in so many ways)...like Hedges, Reed
Kaki King is also an incredibly dynamic musician, who brings her own passion, anger and fury to the song. Each performance is an interpretation and thus a new birth for the music. Sure, there is more tapping, more hits, more pull-offs, more percussion. There is joyful, ecstatic abandon in this version. This is a letting go - the feeling of running through cornfields at dusk. Dancing and dancing under a new moon.
For everyone to whom this film meant something - for everyone to whom this song means something: look up Michael Hedges. Listen to his music. Feel his love and passion for music and life. Mourn his death. Understand. This is his song. Rest in peace, beautiful person.
of course Micheals version is going to be better.he wrote the damn thing.
this version CLEARLLLLLLLLLLLLLY has MORE feeling in it. not saying that Micheals doesnt. if you cant tell that then just forget about music all together.
its like comparing Buckethead to Slash.
clearly Buckethead is a better guitarist but Slash plays with more feeling. I for one like this version better because of it. You say its sloppy? pretty sure no1 asked you to do a cover for the movie. =]
@iRockyy i don't think it's fair to say this version has any more feeling. kaki king is playing this song in her own style (i'd say more angry and faster than the original). michael hedges version changes dynamic a lot more and seems to me more lyrical.....
it's an opinion. i just think it's unfair to say that this version is "clearly " has more feeling. and that you should forget about music if you disagree.... - not true!
@iRockyy dude she got paid to commercialise a sing by a guy who wasn't out to commercialise his music, heard in an interview she wasn't sure if she should've, i like both versions, but clearly has more feeling?! lol no chance, throwing in tapping is actually being lazy, most of her music tends to be =P
@mutley2209 BadlyDrawnGirl1664 couldn't have said it better. i say that it CLEARLY has more feeling because i like her version BETTER. everyone likes and has a different style especially as far as playing guitar. i like her style and version of it better, im not knocking micheal hedges, her version of this piece hits home more than the original. it's a fucking opinion and your retarded and obviously dont play guitar if you think percussion guitar is "lazy" say that to a real guitarist
@iRockyy yes i do play, tapping and percussion is supposed to open up the guitar to more, it's supposed to open up your writing not become the basis of it, this is the trap she's fallen into with alot of her music, a novice can tap, it takes a player to use it
@mutley2209 i'd really like to see a novice tap ANY part part of this song, you're argument is completely invalid if you truly believe anything you just said. she uses every aspect of her guitar just as Antoine and Andy and Craig or any other percussion acoustic player. just because you don't enjoy her style doesn't mean that she is a novice player.
Kaki was asked by the producers to make a much shorter, flashier version of hedges' ritual dance. And those are her hands, there's a photo on her myspace of this scene being filmed.
This is a Michael Hedges song, it is just redone by Kaki King for the movie.
If you like this style, go watch its creator, Michael Hedges. Now...like seriously go now and watch Aerial Boundaries and his recording of Ritual Dance
For the guitar players out there, one of the big problems with this cover is all the open strings that keep ringing out. Having seen and met Michael Hedges many times, I can say that this version pales in comparison to the original and does not stand a chance against the live versions Hedge's would do. (A few are here on Youtube.)
Hedges is cool, King is cool. But this movie dripped of cornballiness like no other. I'm a guitar player of 20 yrs. and I don't know what it was. The kid was not all that believeable and Williams smacked of a pedo. 3 words. Weird Hollywood Filler.
I don't really agree, I think that it's a charming movie. It's like a modern re-spin of Oliver Twist, but with really good music. Sure, it's very obvious that the kid has no idea what he's doing when they put the guitar in his hands, but he's not supposed 2. He's an actor, not a musician. The guitar is nothing but a prop to them. And Williams looked like an ok guy up unti'll the very end where u c that he's a douche. All in all, it's a good movie, but one that you can't take too seriously...
I don't deny Freddie Highmore's acting ability. I think he'll go really far. I love Williams too. Even when he's creepy, 1 Hr Photo and especially The Final Cut was an excellent and disturbing movie. This was not a good one for him even though everything he touches turns to gold. The guitar playing was pretty bad though. Maybe I've seen too many Andy Mckee and Antoine Dufour videos on youtube, that will spoil any fake performance!
Plozen, your addition makes sense but it doesnt make up for the clearly adult hands. And with enough time they can. The eye only catches about 96 frames per second. Shake the camera a bit and more frames are produced, allowing more time for the visual trick to take place.
i read up somewhere they DID get kaki in to play for freddie in the guitar parts.. i think it was the baritone improv song where freddie first gets to play the guitar. dont quote me on that though.
I don't appreciate being called a prick, but try listening to jazz once in a while. They all play arrangements of songs other artists have written and make money off of them. Music isn't about the money. Maybe pop music, but not this kind of stuff.
I agree. It's not about the money. It's not even the money I'm angry about. It's the fact that a bunch of little kids who don't watch credits in movies thought Kaki actually wrote the song. Hedges doesn't really get any credit because his name is one of the last to appear on the screen.
Wow this song is so easy to learn lol. Took me about half an hour! And to clarify, it's not freddie playing. If you freexe-frame it the hands playing are clearly adult hands.
No their his hands they made him memorize patterns... No one was playing it was dubbed over. Impossible for them to switch into all the camera angles without mistakes.
Besides Freddie Highmore was like 15 when the movie was shot.
This is freaking noise. Hedges was brilliant because he knew how to use rythym and percussion as a tool - not a distraction. This is like heavy metal guitarists who hide behind distortion - interesting but not compelling.
Michael Hedges never had a Facebook page before. So I decided to start my own. Just go ahead and type in "Michael Hedges" in the search box and you'll see the page: "Michael Hedges: The Guitarist from Another Planet". I want to see if Hedges's fanbase is still out there somewhere. Long live Hedges!

totally agree I play it this way though becasue its easier i play by ear and the videos on you tube of him playing this are hard to hear but i can still play it
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I don't mind her version too much (though Hedges' playing obviously has 90% more groove), but what does piss me off is that they have the kid playing the song with the 'overhand' fretting technique on the neck, which is totally unnecessary exhibitionist crap which devalues and cheapens the composition, toting it as some kind of spectacle. The point is it's music and it's funky and you can bob your head to it. The fact that it looks odd is a bonus, and if you abuse that you're just a showoff.
Man, it's just a movie. No one mids or care about your opinion, and it's awesome that version. And this not devalue the composition, every music play some pieces at his/her own way, some of them great after all. Fast, slow, is music. Good day to all :3
It's not a show-offy technique. Did you watch the movie? The whole idea was that the kid didn't know how to play the guitar. Noone taught him how to play it the "right way." So he did it his own way, which is what music is about.
a big part of solo guitar is preforming it. and people will lose intrest if you just sit still and play, the tap/slap/over the neck hand stuff is more interesting and people will watch and enjoy more
i can play this song. the tuning is DADGCC its pretty hard but if u practice ull get the hang of it. i actually learned this song before the movie came out and when i saw it i was like "dude thats me wtf" cuz i street performed that in town a while back lol. im 14 so that was kinda weird for me when i saw that
haha u can tell that hes not really playing cuz if u look closely u can tell by looking at how big kaki's hand is compared to his small hand. its like all of a sudden he has these long massive fingers when the camera goes into a close up of his fingers lol
yes and no. No, Kaki king is playing it. But his hands do move on the strings...He's acting. there's only 2 songs in the movie where he actually does play a bit. the one is "Dueling Guitars" and I think the other one is at an awkward part of the movie to describe...so, technically NO.
hahahaha jeez jongens, om daar over te gaan zitte miepen.... hahaha
anyways, i'm very doubtful about Freddie Highmore being the one who plays the song as well, sometimes, if you watch very closely, you can see that what he's playing doesn't concord with what you hear.... i've seen this scene so many times now, eventually you just notice it....doesn't make it less cooler though! i love freddie ^^
the temptation to get into a discussion, to argue with someone, is most of the times simply more seducing and tempting than the option to have a normal conversation.... ain't it? :P life is life i s'pose
but Kaki King is the one doing the hand movements, Freddie may be playing some of the songs, but Kaki is the one who plays the rest and does the hand motions when it's just the hands.
i play guitar and i can play ritual dance by michael hedges which is the song here and in Bari improv if you look at his hands he is hitting it on the repeated notes from the pedal. not to be a spirit killer though : /

Delicious song. It's crisp and so amazing I find myself listening over and over. I'm so excited to be figure skating to this song soon.

Wow, join the rest of the geniuses. The late great Michael Hedges wrote this song about 20 or so years ago.

That was AMAZING! It'll be great if he could really play like this in real life though... Well, he's already good in acting:)
shadowsong9 3 years ago
haha u can tell that hes not really playing cuz if u look closely u can tell by looking at how big kaki's hand is compared to his small hand. its like all of a sudden he has these long massive fingers when the camera goes into a close up of his fingers lol
somehardjelly 3 years ago
chill you stupid prick he is acting.....bonehead!

jetwolfie 3 years ago

correct
Kisanet12 3 years ago
yes and no. No, Kaki king is playing it. But his hands do move on the strings...He's acting. there's only 2 songs in the movie where he actually does play a bit. the one is "Dueling Guitars" and I think the other one is at an awkward part of the movie to describe...so, technically NO.
TexasFlood30 3 years ago 2
yes it's really him playing on the guitar
he says it in one of his intervieuws (sorry don't know how to spell it)
delfin700 3 years ago
what are you five?who dosnt know how to spell interviews??

I'm Belgian and in Belgium we learn English when you're 14 ( my age)
sorry if you don't like it
I wonder how your Duthch is!

hahahaha jeez jongens, om daar over te gaan zitte miepen.... hahaha
anyways, i'm very doubtful about Freddie Highmore being the one who plays the song as well, sometimes, if you watch very closely, you can see that what he's playing doesn't concord with what you hear.... i've seen this scene so many times now, eventually you just notice it....doesn't make it less cooler though! i love freddie ^^

gij ebt elemaal glijk maat !

the temptation to get into a discussion, to argue with someone, is most of the times simply more seducing and tempting than the option to have a normal conversation.... ain't it? :P life is life i s'pose
xx
XiomaraCarebear 3 years ago
but Kaki King is the one doing the hand movements, Freddie may be playing some of the songs, but Kaki is the one who plays the rest and does the hand motions when it's just the hands.
CrazyChinese11 3 years ago
but why did Freddie say in an interview that it was realy him?
delfin700 3 years ago
because he is technically playing it, but its not him you hear. i can guarantee that he did not play this song or bari improv.
LordRavenX8 3 years ago
that's to bad =(
but how do you know that?
delfin700 3 years ago
i play guitar and i can play ritual dance by michael hedges which is the song here and in Bari improv if you look at his hands he is hitting it on the repeated notes from the pedal. not to be a spirit killer though : /
