Two things: 1. China is a third world country by GDP per capita 7,518 $. 2. There is nothing wrong in criticizing other cultures. It does not always mean conservatism. Marx himself was very critical towards traditional societies (and Egypt is definitely a traditional society)

There are vast areas of China that ARE basically third-world. I've seen them. They are punctuated by large industrial centers and megalopolis cities. It's just that it's such a large, populous country with culture varying by region. The government doesn't usually allow westerners and especially Americans to see the large slums in some of the major cities. I had a hard time with that when I was there.

I would like Bill to tell us why the United States is borrowing money from a poor third world country like China.
We are funding our entitlement programs with Money borrowed from other countries. How much longer are they going to fund us if we have no intention of paying them back? Democrats like bill Maher don't think deficit spending is a problem. I guess we can start printing money and make our dollar worth less than the paper its printed on.

Obama's Stimulus package was nothing more than an expensive, bloated Band Aid (temporary fix) designed to fix the economy only long enough to get re-elected in 2012. It backfired on him because it didn't fix the economy at all.

Two things: 1. China is a third world country by GDP per capita 7,518 $. 2. There is nothing wrong in criticizing other cultures. It does not always mean conservatism. Marx himself was very critical towards traditional societies (and Egypt is definitely a traditional society)

@tsxado It's China, a society that clearly functions (and does so very well, relative to it's recent past) despite over-population and a 6% middle class. I think it's clear that a per-capita analysis is irrelevant when evaluating a country's well being (as opposed to individuals') in a situation such as this.

@tsxado I understand that the per-capita GDP doesn't do anyone any favors, but the overall GDP (since we're talking about the overall picture, this is the relevant statistic, afaik) is 2.5 times that of UK. That means the UK is a 4th world country comparatively. Afaik, this is a fair comparison, since the UK is the typical size of other third-world countries. You yourself emphasized the *country's* well being in your last sentence (as oppossed to the society's)-that's what we're discussing, no?

China a poor third world country? So that's why as of 2010 China is second to US in terms of GDP (ahead of UK, Japan, Germany, France...) And China is top 5 on GDP growth rate. Where is the US on GDP growth rate? 133rd. Behind several real 3rd world countries (like mine, Philippines who is on top 29) Source: IMF and CIA World Factbook.
I like Bill. But it is clear sometimes he just say whatever he wants to say even without thinking or getting the facts about a certain topic.

China has maglev rail and is building the world's largest high-speed rail network and a highway system that will eventually rival Ike's. Bill, you need to check out Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and about 50-80 major coastal and interior cities to see how Third World much of China is. Tokyo is swarming with Chinese tourists blowing on avg $5,000 per visit. They'll have nearly 90 million earning a first world salary in 2011. Take a trip to Asia Bill please, but your dollars won't go very far!

There are vast areas of China that ARE basically third-world. I've seen them. They are punctuated by large industrial centers and megalopolis cities. It's just that it's such a large, populous country with culture varying by region. The government doesn't usually allow westerners and especially Americans to see the large slums in some of the major cities. I had a hard time with that when I was there.

Whether China is a "poor third world country" depends how you look at it. With it being so populous, if ONLY 1/5 of China live like the AVERAGE AMERICANS, that's plenty of wealth & power for the rulers to feel comforted by. A "poor third world country" (I know Bill exaggerated for comic effect, yes) does not become ONLY THE THIRD country on earth to send a human into space, or fly a prototype stealth bomber.
