@dulf87 Sure...the AIM 9 Sidewinder speed is mach 2.5 so yeah only a few fighters can actually out run it and that is using the afterburners. Plus, you are not dogfighting at mach 2.5 so when one of these babies gets fired at you - you don't have time to accelerate to out run it usually. You go defensive, drop flares, and turn 90 degrees to the missles angle of attack and accelerate.....

Two reasons really. First is that starting in the '60s the strategic bombing role shifted from bombers to ICBMs, and second, US doctrine currently favors air superiority fighters (F-15, F-22) and multirole fighters (F-16, F-35), both of which can adequately perform the interceptor role.

The MiG-31's service ceiling is 67,600ft, as compared to an estimated 65,000ft on the F-15 and F-22 and 60,000ft on the F-16 and F-35. As far as I know our fighters don't have a problem remaining at these altitudes, and a AAM can close the difference in a matter of seconds or less.

The key difference is that like all interceptors the MiG-31 trades maneuverability for raw speed at high altitude, which is fine against high altitude strategic bombers, but current US doctrine is to only commit high altitude strategic bombers (B-52) once air superiority has been established and ground defenses suppressed.

The F14 took six hours of maintenance to every one hour of maintenance for the F18 - simple economics - the F14 got too expensive to fly (just like the mighty SR71 - we use unmanned drones now) I miss the roar of the F14 in full burner - give me goosebumps just thinking of it!

I wish someone would have said that to the U.S. Navy. The F-14 and F-15 both were designed to withstand 8,000 hours of punishment, but the Airforce and Navy both requested ONLY a 4,000 Hour aircraft. I just don't get it. From what I understand, most were barely near half of that. At least from the F-14 D Model series.
