Flyers better than Bruins? Four straight dogshiteaters! I've been a Bruin fan since 1967 and Johnny Pie McKenzie had talent was agressive but never did dirty crap Flyers did! hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
The Flyers stained hockey of that era with their DOGSHIT goon, dirty play. Only McLeish was a star on a team that won with mayhem and intimidation with few rules to hold them back. Thankfully the league changed the rulebook and outlawed the lowlife no talent shit the Flyers used to win and that type of SHIT will never be seen again, Viva les BRUINS!
@DonQwantsyou Hockey is a physical sport... You fucking idiot lmfao.... And for sure your a Front Runner (Bandwagoner) I doubt you liked Boston before they won the Cup... Flyers are better then the Bruins......
Yes, NHL players stayed in 1972 and in 1979 , WHA players stayed at 1974. But there was no the dirtiest play of their opponents in these games. What sense of your comparison?
i dont think the reputation of the russians was still intact with us canadians. i wouldnt say we think theyre losers but canadians dont have very much respect for them after that.
Our players stayed in Moscow in 1972. Our WHA players stayed in 1974. Our NHL players stayed in the Challenge Cup in 1979. We did not leave the game like sorehead losers when we got beaten.
@tracedakid45 so i'm not the only one. they said they won through intimidation. well they didn't against the Flyers and they didn't against us Canadians in the Summit Series in 1972
I Dd not see Canadians in boxing, mixfight, judo, sambo-wrestling struggle or other single combats, where many Russian guys who take there the first places.
Probably Canadians are too cowardly. Canadians obviously not have steel eggs, but in hockey they try to represent themselves like supermens.
Conclusion; the only thing where Canadians is strong it is dirty hockey where it is not necessary.
@AHRZAMANBALASY you don't because you watch state propaganda tv which only shows russian victories, and hence you know nothing of canada. last olympics? oh right, canada 14 gold, most in any winter olympics ever. russian federation 3. when your kgb run evil empire used sports as a weapon your country won medals, but did everything else badly. now that your country begins to spend money on its people and not weapons, we see the real russia.

Alright for all of the people in Canada bitching about the roughness of this game. Hockey is a game created in Canada and a game in which hitting is just as much a part of the game as shooting is. The Flyers were a team built for rough play and that was their strength so they used it. The city of Philadelphia has a personality of being rough and that's why the Flyers teams are based on hitting because those are the kinda people Flyers' fans are. So quit your bitching.
this is hockey in north america and cause players from ex-russia play in nhl , it means it is hockey. Do your research and watch old 70-80 nhl hockey teams to anderstand our way .
why in this summit Montreal Canadians played good hockey and didn't fight??? Because they played really good hockey - as Russian guys! and flyers just know that they can not win using normal way - so they allow themselfs fight and so on! and needn't tell me about YOUR way of hockey! Hockey is Hockey! and what flyers did - it si not Hockey - it is BOXING...so suck team...
Well in 1974-1978 periode, flyers were that way of playing hockey against other nhl teams. That was there visit card identity , but you must know that even there style (boxer) , in 1976 Montreal Canadiens got the stanley cup against the flyers (ever flyers were verry tough to play) ...So all means they were beat-able , with lot of determination ...
ok! they used their style and won only 2 Stanley Cups...for example Montreal used only their skills and mind and won how many Cups???
why all north americans do not want admite that it was very durty game??? Maybe Clark was a very good player, but he layed very durty agains Soiviets!
I very like Esposito, Hull, Henderson and others great players - because were really professionals and played CLEAN hockey. but I do not respect Clark, who broke Kharlamov's feet in 1972...
you are right - flyers played durty 1972-1980 a lot and clark look as a dum for his stick on kharlamov (he look looser beside kharla) . dont forget i am canadian (french canadian) not american and the rude and durty play of flyers was not so nice to see on ice ... you bet on that ....
@shaoduoduo They won 2 cups with Bill Barber (NHL Hall of Famer), Bobby Clarke (NHL Hall of Famer), Reggie Leach (76 goal scorer), and Bernie Parent (NHL Hall of Famer). They also had a bunch of other players who were great hockey players on top of also fighting. Hell, Dave Schultz was a 20 goal scorer. Don Saleski scored 30. The first year the Flyers won the Cup they had five 30 goal scorers. Phil Esposito openly stated that the Flyers won because they had the talent to do so.
@shaoduoduo your a shame for yourself. We can fight, we can score. YES we do play rough hockey, but let me tell you something. WHY do we check in hockey? We check hockey to seperate the man from the puck. that doesnt mean go for him and not the puck. hockey is one of the roughest sports ever, and thats the way it should be played. Canada is very good at hockey, (continued in following comment)
@hockeyminimigget haha corey corey...Montreal Canadaians played very good hockey - with checking and so on...but Flyers just fight on the ice...it was very far from true hockey...
but this year in Vancouver Canada Team was really great! But Flyers still sucks...haha
Well i think that guy hit Kharlamov 'cause #17 was one of few man who can beat the flyers on their own ice, that's why he did that ,however something like that happens all the time when US or Canada plays against Soviet Union. So whatever happened USA and Canada sucks anyway to me ..:)
Again, I want to see Russians lead an NHL team to the Stanley Cup. It's the hardest trophy to win in all of sports. When the game got phyiscal, (which is just as much a strategic part of winning as skill....it's called wearing down the opponent) the Russians got scared as the Flyers checked them all over the ice. Like I said. The NHL is the best league in the world. Give me one KHL team and let them play a full 82 game season and they'll get slaughtered in the long run.
@6tbonemmvn77..... A lot of people make it sound like ALL the Flyers did was check you and hit you until you were to tired to play...WRONG....Some of these men were ELITE players! Bobby Clarke had nearly 900 assists in his career and won the Hart Trophy three times, Bill Barber is STILL th flyers all time goal scorer, Reggie Leach and Rich Macleash could FLY and Bernie Parent (although it was Wayne Stephenson in goal for this game) is arguably one of the top ten goalies of all time in the NHL.
yeah and some russian will come on here saying the world championships is the greatest tournament because they won it 2 or the last 3. Gotta love them losing to the Czechs!!! and ofcourse getting hammered 7-3 by the Canadian team. (best game of the olympics for me!)
Its not like Ed Van Impe pole axed that Russian (was it Kharlamov? whatever! lol). The fact is Van Impe was a rough defenseman, they couldnt adapt to the best team in the NHL and failed. They let the Flyers game plan break up their mind set. And Tretiak looked like a cardboard goalie in this one too. Amazing how a few rough episodes could demorialize even the "great" Tretiak. The Russians were losers anyway. They beat crappy Olympic opponents for yrs but they really sucked against top NHL teams.
The Red Army sucked. This is common fact among the intelligent hockey people in the world. The Flyers were nearly a dynasty when Philly and Red Army met. Red Army were the biggest chicken shits in the history of sport when they left the ice. You DONT leave the ice in protest cuz the Flyers are playing rough, you suck it up like a man and do what youre supposed to do if you really claim to be the best in the world (like the Russians believed anyway). Flyers won that day. Democracy won that day.
@ULTRAPOWER1977Habs your basing this on one game? CSKA dominated all other NHL teams and the NHL relied on the flyers to keep the NHL integrity as i noticed there were a lot of no calls in the 2 minute sequence before that flyer goon came out of the penalty box and nailed the russian who didnt even have the puck and no penalty. I dont blame the russians for leaving. The NHL clearly told the refs to fix the game but, i'll admit that the flyers still outplayed CSKA that night
@Gyro911 More whining about the Flyers as usual. They out skilled the Russians besides outplaying them physically. Nothing was fixed. The Russians could barely get across the Flyers blue line for most of the game.
@HeavyD2544 I'm glad the flyers won this game, but what i'm saying is that CSKA werent as bad as they showed themselves to be here. They walked off the ice, broke off their momentum, and pretty much gave up when they came back in the ice with the thought they were going to get the high checking calls
@Gyro911 I completely agree with you about them not being that bad, but what really had the Russians in a funk was an early version of the center ice trap. It wasn't the same polished system as the Jersey Devils trap, but it eliminated skating room and clogged up passing lanes. I think the Russians expected to get traditional NHL play in the neutral zone, and they paid for it. CSKA paid for it both physically and fundamentally, as the Flyers used their own "Iron Curtain" to wear them down.
Yeah, I kinda wondered about that. If the red army really even tried at the end. I mean its good to see the US take this one, but I always wonder if it was true. Either way we still have 1980 as well.
@Bunnsofsteel i was cheering for the soviets because everyone was so confident the flyers were going to win. Im canadian but it would have been nice not to see this team of 4 stanley cups win again. I was 16 so i remembered it very well.
I saw this game on TV at the time, every hit was clean, and hard. Just think, if the Red Army ran from the Philadelphia Flyers, its no wonder we won the cold war.
the flyers were never really respected by the canadian teams or the devils or rangers but you gotta admit we can kick some ass when it comes to fighting
in 1972 and in 1974, the soviets poured it on to the teams representing america, but the american teams didn't leave..looks like the soviets were getting a taste of their own medicine, only worse. GO FLYERS
the old soviet Union teams were amazing but they were soft and a bunch of sucks, if you look at alot of international games between Canada and CCCP, if the refs were russians, forgettaboutit, they were totally biased against U.S.and Canada
Well, I can't completely agree. Every team in this day was soft compared to flyers. The flyers played a different style that many teams had not seen. They took cheap shots, hit hard, and get teams angry. It was not the way the game was played back then, but it was the way the flyers won back then.
The biggest thing with the Russians is that game was a game that was for nothing but pride. Sure pride means alot, expecially in those days, but their fact was they wanted to avoid injury and go back to the games that counted. I mean the only reason they came back was for the money. There were a couple shots that weren't being called, so they simply protected their players from that point.
@Kartkid024 What I find interesting is that the two NHL teams that did well ats. the Russians were total opposites: the Flyers, who played a rough, often borderline dirty hockey then, and the Habs, who skated with speed and finesse.
How true, since pretty much all of the Flyer players were Canadians during that era (mainly Western Canada). We wanted the Flyers to win at all costs.
wrong. not everyone. mikita wasnt born in canada. but most nhl players were born in canada, at least 95%. flyers humilitated the fag russians and showed them how CANADIAN hockey is played. no bullshit, no nonsense. its too bad they didnt carry a few of the russian players in body bags. that would be classic.
i know players like mikita and salming werent canadian, but with them along with ivan boldirev, they were born in europe but bread in canada and practically considered themselves canadian, mikita even played two games for canada in the 1972 summit series
ah go cry u little fucking queermo flyers beat the soviet union the only loss they had.nd bobby clarke scored a fucking goal while on his fucking ass at 3:44 FLYERS RULE
"go cry u little fucking queermo flyers beat the soviet union the only loss they had. And bobby clarke scored a fucking goal while on his fucking ass at 3:44 FLYERS RULE"
Actually, that was Larry Goodenough who scored. Bobby Clarke made the nice feed, though.

I dislike debates. I like facts. You mean We can fight, we can score.
But it defies the facts. You cant score because NA clubs and National team were bitten by USSR hockey.
You cant fight because in the boxing and in the other kind of fight there was incomparably more soviet champions than canadiens.
So think what are you speaking about.

I saw this game on TV at the time, every hit was clean, and hard. Just think, if the Red Army ran from the Philadelphia Flyers, its no wonder we won the cold war.

Russians didn't know what to do. They couldn't fight because it was forbidden in Russia. The just left.

the flyers were never really respected by the canadian teams or the devils or rangers but you gotta admit we can kick some ass when it comes to fighting

in 1972 and in 1974, the soviets poured it on to the teams representing america, but the american teams didn't leave..looks like the soviets were getting a taste of their own medicine, only worse. GO FLYERS
cowboyzsuk81 3 years ago
the old soviet Union teams were amazing but they were soft and a bunch of sucks, if you look at alot of international games between Canada and CCCP, if the refs were russians, forgettaboutit, they were totally biased against U.S.and Canada
quincee33 2 years ago
@quincee33
Well, I can't completely agree. Every team in this day was soft compared to flyers. The flyers played a different style that many teams had not seen. They took cheap shots, hit hard, and get teams angry. It was not the way the game was played back then, but it was the way the flyers won back then.

@Kartkid024
Flyers vs. Soviet clubs 1:2.
Are you speaking about political sport? or...
What is good in flyers if they are beated?
I try to understand logic of NA's reflection.
before2after 1 year ago
@Kartkid024 You are absolutely right. The Flyers set out to make the Russians jumpy. The Russ skated with their heads down and paid the price.

@wilmanric1
Kartkid024 1 year ago
@Kartkid024 What I find interesting is that the two NHL teams that did well ats. the Russians were total opposites: the Flyers, who played a rough, often borderline dirty hockey then, and the Habs, who skated with speed and finesse.

Canadian propaganda.

The flyers are so nasty that they made a professional team quit in the middle of a game. The flyers will still kick your arse!!!!

I remember this game vividly even though I was 7 years old. For one afternoon, all of Canada was a Flyers fan.
leafyutube 3 years ago 27
How true, since pretty much all of the Flyer players were Canadians during that era (mainly Western Canada). We wanted the Flyers to win at all costs.
nuckster94 3 years ago
not only the flyers every single player in the nhl was canadian
bklonb 2 years ago
wrong. not everyone. mikita wasnt born in canada. but most nhl players were born in canada, at least 95%. flyers humilitated the fag russians and showed them how CANADIAN hockey is played. no bullshit, no nonsense. its too bad they didnt carry a few of the russian players in body bags. that would be classic.
KILLERPOWERCanadiens 2 years ago
i know players like mikita and salming werent canadian, but with them along with ivan boldirev, they were born in europe but bread in canada and practically considered themselves canadian, mikita even played two games for canada in the 1972 summit series
bklonb 2 years ago
Mikita became Canadian, but Salming never was, always played for Sweden, and Doldirev - well, who cares about him!!, lol

Actually, that was Larry Goodenough who scored. Bobby Clarke made the nice feed, though.

That kind of goonery was completely foreign to Soviet hockey, it was dispicable to the russian's finesse game.
