If you guys are helicopter pilots/fans and have any questions at all, preticularly on the CH-53E (Marine helicopter) i am a fully qualified mechanic on those and love to get geeky about helicopters. Feel free to send me a message.
@michaelmiller85 Hey, I love your vids and I'm following the Heli Network on FB and I've dreamt of becoming a helicopter pilot my entire life, hopefully I will afford it one day. My question is this, WHY do you fly the MD500 from the left hand seat? I assume the reason you usually fly from the right hand seat is because if you need to do anything but "fly" the helicopter, you need to use your left hand since you should never take your hand of the cyclic.
@MegaHighflyer10 Fixed wing Captains fly in the Left seat.... Most Chopper Pilots are seated in the Right seat. (Look at the Base models for the Bell 206s and Eurocopter AS350 AStars. They only have controls on the right side (Unless specified by the customer))
@michaelmiller85 Did you mean to say, the pilot sits on the left, unlike most helicopters? Because in most aircraft, the pilot does sit in the left seat. Sorry to nit-pic. I've heard heli pilots usually sit on the right as to not have the collective in the way of crawling in.
@c6rocks unless the helicopter has a cabin and not doors, and you enter the cockpit from the rear, then theres no way to avoid the collective from getting in the way on the pilot side. and then the copilot (left) side has the benefit of not having collective in the way.
I would love to make more heli videos in the jet ranger, but due to the job I'm at it is taking a while to get the approval. I will see what I can do.

This helicopter was designed by Howard Hughes as the OH-6A Cayuse (Model 369), as a light observation helicopter for the Vietnam Conflict. It was used in conjunction with the AH-1 Cobra on hunter killer (Pink Teams) teams in Vietnam. Very fast and maneuverable helicopters. Later marketed in the civilian sector as the Hughes 500. Awesome little helicopters. Army Special Forces still use them with the nickname "Little Bird". I would love to fly one of these helicopters! Thanks for posting.

How old is your boss? I'm 42 and haven't flown for 12 years since getting my CPLH in Florida. I'm considering flying again if I can find a Schweizer 300 school here in Japan. (Be a nice change from the R22). It's a nice vid. I wish you both well.
QUE !!! what!!! i did think so the guy was the pilot!!! Se veía muy prepotente cuando lo estaban grabando con la cámara y resulta que él no es el piloto. En cambio el piloto fue muy sencillo y humilde.
That start was a borderline abort. Sounded like either the FCU needs bumped up, or the fuel nozzle secondary fuel flow was sluggish. Either way the 500 sound still gives me a woody after all these years!
@michaelmiller85 If you find out, drop me an email. I'm a disabled vet myself and wanted to go through flight school. Unfortunatley OIF II kept me from having time for it.
Hmm...55.000+ US dollars for private pilot license? In a private flying school? I guess this is too much for 40+hours of flight time. By comparison, here in Russia (private school) you'll pay a little over 20.000 USD for Private Pilot Certificate (theory, exams,42 hours incl.10 h solo)...maybe, because the training is done on piston Robinsons R22 or 44.

Nothing like teh smell of JP4 first thing in the morning the HU500C was called teh time machine flew at 6 miles per minute 180 MPH. fast agile and sweet. MY fave
@WOWMageLeveler It depends on what license you are wanting to get. To go all the way through around $55.000+. There is a "grant" if you were former military.
Love it.............oh, to be able to have one of those and just do that!
Living in N Ireland during the troubles gave me the chance to see lots of military heli's close up very frequently..........sadly the peace process has robbed me of that luxury!
Sometimes the price of peace is just too high!!!!!!!!!!!
@michaelmiller85 what our friend said is, I believe, a quote from from the movie "pursuit of happyness" (when a guy parks his Ferrari in front of Will Smith).
@geddon436 I'm not sure how critical the 60 limit is. I have heard of guys starting some Long rangers, taking 90 seconds. The starter probably gets hot. Shortens the life of the component. I'm not exactly sure.

just a question, in the other start up video you see the percentage of the gas producer go slowly up between 40 and 60 per cent, and in this one after cooling down from 200 degrees the gas producer goes up very fast between 40 and 60. is it because of the higher TOT temperature that was before starting or did you simply inject more fuel?
@therealTOTOfan The first start was the first start of the morning, and the second was still when it was nice and warm. No additional fuel was injected. It has the Bendix system so it is all automatic. I'm not an expert in the turbine world yet, but because everything was already nice and warm (meaning fluids, bearings, etc), it allowed everything to start up faster. Good question.
@michaelmiller85 thanks for answering, just have another question.. now at the second startup here in this video i noticed the N1 was way above 13 per cent, if not 20 .. in order to get the TOT down below 150 ..so is that 13 per cent N1 not that much of a rule? i mean when the TOT might take so long to get below 150 that the N1 is lets say about 25 per cent, would you abort the start and try again after 60 sec or still introduce fuel? sorry for bothering xD
@groundfxdude I'm quickly approaching 1,900 hours total time, over 1,000 hours instructor time, 270 hours unaided night, 500+ hours cross-country. As of right now I'm here in the tourist area of the Smoky Mountain National Park in TN. Will I relocate, yes, depending on what the options are.
@michaelmiller85 how much turbine time, and what ships? By the bye; I did a little Smoky Mountain flying back in my younger, more foolish days. Beautiful place to pull some pitch...
What a amazing video.. You never see just how long it takes to actually start one up in the movies and on television.. The MD500 has and probably always will be one of my most favorite helicopters..
Next time I'm in the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge TN. area, I will take a tour with you guys! Do you go over Dollywood? I agree; nice ship! I took off in a red, white and blue 500C tour back in '94 out of PIE... yours is a much better ship!
Mike,I noticed you're wearing the seatbelt..is that required for startup? I also noticed at 3:42 that the tot was at about 180F...is that acceptable?????
Loach porn... Swear I want to lose my HC virginity to a 500... Not some Robbie... But I don't think there is one @ BNA... Cep the ones that watch me speed ;-)
Geez. Isn't that always the way? Younger enthusiast guy hovers around the machine obsessively, making vids and so on, then has to make way for older, wealthier fatso owner. Story of the World. Lovely bird, though. Thanks for the vids. I have a little bit of 500 time and I'd marry one given the chance.
Another question,if you have a hot start, will that cause the turbine to fail? And,I see you're holding the black button down on the collective,is that the ignitors you hold down?
@BCAD01 - That is a good question. I'm checked out in the aircraft, but when I only start it up I can't log that time because i don't have the intention of actual flight. I need to check the regulations again.
You need to make sure the area is clear prior to starting an aircraft that is for sure. As far is yelling CLEAR, I would have yelled it but I had several people that were already making sure the area was clear prior to starting.
is there any aeroclub that rent the md 500 ?which is the hour/cost $ ? thanks

@BCAD01 Motor the starter prior to introducing fuel does indeed cool the tot. The hughes 369 and the MD500, both of which have the shocks on the skids to help with a softer landing but really to help keep ground resonance to a minimum.
