  • is there any aeroclub that rent the md 500 ?which is the hour/cost $ ? thanks

  • If you guys are helicopter pilots/fans and have any questions at all, preticularly on the CH-53E (Marine helicopter) i am a fully qualified mechanic on those and love to get geeky about helicopters. Feel free to send me a message.

  • My dream is to be a PIC of a MD500.

  • The key is to allow the ignition button to work, allowing the engine o start.

  • Whats the key for?

  • Very beautiful.

I would like to fly. Where do I sign up?

    Best Regards from North-Germany

  • i want this helicopter so bad!

  • Needs rocket pods. Or twin belt fed .50's. Or maybe a quad belt fed M60 conversion

  • Was there a reason he didn't just take off from his starting postion, instead of taxiing around to the strip?

  • how does it fly when the blades are spinning so slow?

  • @TheeGoldenOreo I think it's the camera not the blades

  • The EGG of DEATH...

  • Gay

  • i have a r22 i flew the md once but i didnt really lick it it was to twitcchy it was a rental theres nothing like flying your own ship

  • that was so cool thanks for sharing with every one great chopper

  • didnot think it was normal for someone else to start up your machine ,, ,oh well maby i am behind the times

  • Mike can you fly this aircraft or you only know how to start it? and then turn into the pilots maid

  • Ok thnx

  • Why is he in the left seat?

  • @c6rocks The Md500 aircraft the Pilot sits on the left, unlike most aircraft.

  • @michaelmiller85 Hey, I love your vids and I'm following the Heli Network on FB and I've dreamt of becoming a helicopter pilot my entire life, hopefully I will afford it one day. My question is this, WHY do you fly the MD500 from the left hand seat? I assume the reason you usually fly from the right hand seat is because if you need to do anything but "fly" the helicopter, you need to use your left hand since you should never take your hand of the cyclic.

  • @michaelmiller85 not just md500 pilots unlike fixed wing aircraft the main(captain) seat is the left seat in most helicopters

  • @MegaHighflyer10 Fixed wing Captains fly in the Left seat.... Most Chopper Pilots are seated in the Right seat. (Look at the Base models for the Bell 206s and Eurocopter AS350 AStars. They only have controls on the right side (Unless specified by the customer))

  • @michaelmiller85 Did you mean to say, the pilot sits on the left, unlike most helicopters? Because in most aircraft, the pilot does sit in the left seat. Sorry to nit-pic. I've heard heli pilots usually sit on the right as to not have the collective in the way of crawling in.

  • @c6rocks unless the helicopter has a cabin and not doors, and you enter the cockpit from the rear, then theres no way to avoid the collective from getting in the way on the pilot side. and then the copilot (left) side has the benefit of not having collective in the way.

  • @michaelmiller85 I learned in the enstrom, also a lefty!

  • all hughes and MD 500 are letf seat PIC and it looks like the oleo struts need to be recharged or replaced

  • I would love to make more heli videos in the jet ranger, but due to the job I'm at it is taking a while to get the approval. I will see what I can do.

  • What I meant was that I saw other heli's in other of your videos

  • Michealmiller85 please make more videos on the MD500 I hope to become a helicopter pilot one day I saw in the background other heli's if you have a 206 jet ranger, Bell OH-58 Kiowa,or an enstrom 480 please make videos on any of them it would help tremendously, thnx

  • Why cant you have a "hot start"

  • @NASIMNASIM Because it will exceed the temperature limits of the turbine, possibly causing damage to the turbine section of the engine.

  • The MD 500 is based on the Hughes OH-6A. Great bird!

  • nothing like the purring sound of the 500 :)

  • i can start this with a booster cable only

  • wow

  • This helicopter was designed by Howard Hughes as the OH-6A Cayuse (Model 369), as a light observation helicopter for the Vietnam Conflict. It was used in conjunction with the AH-1 Cobra on hunter killer (Pink Teams) teams in Vietnam. Very fast and maneuverable helicopters. Later marketed in the civilian sector as the Hughes 500. Awesome little helicopters. Army Special Forces still use them with the nickname "Little Bird". I would love to fly one of these helicopters! Thanks for posting.

  • It's a Hughes 369A,... my personal favorite!

  • How old is your boss? I'm 42 and haven't flown for 12 years since getting my CPLH in Florida. I'm considering flying again if I can find a Schweizer 300 school here in Japan. (Be a nice change from the R22). It's a nice vid. I wish you both well.

  • Luv this vid your one lucky guy. enjoy your ship....

  • I see.....So YOU'RE Mike.....NOT J.A.F.O.

  • what no power steering?

  • QUE !!! what!!! i did think so the guy was the pilot!!! Se veía muy prepotente cuando lo estaban grabando con la cámara y resulta que él no es el piloto. En cambio el piloto fue muy sencillo y humilde.

  • awesome, although since when did 170 become 150??

  • That start was a borderline abort. Sounded like either the FCU needs bumped up, or the fuel nozzle secondary fuel flow was sluggish. Either way the 500 sound still gives me a woody after all these years!

  • Do MD500's have anti theft features like a car, such as a lock and key? Is it easy to steal the helicopter if you were to get it started up on time?

  • omg you make it look so easy, how easy is it for a complete biginner to start one??

  • @michaelmiller85. I am currently in the military...can you point me in the right direction for more info on the grant??

  • @uglysob For the life of me I can even find the grant. I know I have heard of it before but can't remember. I will continue to look.

  • @michaelmiller85 If you find out, drop me an email. I'm a disabled vet myself and wanted to go through flight school. Unfortunatley OIF II kept me from having time for it.

  • @uglysob i can help you with flight school finincing, email me at whytstryp@yahoo.com

  • @whytstryp Thanks...I may be in touch soon. I am also exploring the Post 9/11 GI bill to see what they will cover.

  • @uglysob google guidance helicoters ...VA approved

  • Hmm...55.000+ US dollars for private pilot license? In a private flying school? I guess this is too much for 40+hours of flight time. By comparison, here in Russia (private school) you'll pay a little over 20.000 USD for Private Pilot Certificate (theory, exams,42 hours incl.10 h solo)...maybe, because the training is done on piston Robinsons R22 or 44.

  • @Aprilmarcloud He said 55.000 "To go all the way through" not just a PPL..

  • Eeexxcellent!

  • Nothing like teh smell of JP4 first thing in the morning the HU500C was called teh time machine flew at 6 miles per minute 180 MPH. fast agile and sweet. MY fave

  • i realy want to go to flight school how much dose it cost and is there a grant for it?

  • @WOWMageLeveler It depends on what license you are wanting to get. To go all the way through around $55.000+. There is a "grant" if you were former military.

  • @michaelmiller85 Do you know what grant it is or how you go about applying for it? Thanks in advance!

  • Hey kid go warm that fucker up...........Then dad hops right in there....thanks

  • when u starte du still holding the starter button?

  • At 3:30 - What does "Moto(?)" the starter mean and what does it involve?

  • Love it.............oh, to be able to have one of those and just do that!

Living in N Ireland during the troubles gave me the chance to see lots of military heli's close up very frequently..........sadly the peace process has robbed me of that luxury!

Sometimes the price of peace is just too high!!!!!!!!!!!

    Anyway, love your vids!

  • Beautiful bird!

  • You are so fortunate to fly such a beautiful bird. Take care and happy flights!

  • Hmmmm...... Where's the checklist ???? A disaster awaits....

  • @mrnotar Checklist was on the passenger's seat. Was using the POH.

  • i have one question, what do you do and how do you do it?

  • @nguyentuan1990 What do you mean? How to do what?

  • @michaelmiller85 what do you do and how could you afford a Md500?

  • @michaelmiller85 what our friend said is, I believe, a quote from from the movie "pursuit of happyness" (when a guy parks his Ferrari in front of Will Smith).

  • Pure music! There should be a concert of just turbine powered heli's starting up! Love that MD.

  • How critical is that sixty second rule for the starter?

  • @geddon436 I'm not sure how critical the 60 limit is. I have heard of guys starting some Long rangers, taking 90 seconds. The starter probably gets hot. Shortens the life of the component. I'm not exactly sure.

  • Mike...motoring the starter..does that cool the TOT? In this video,it looked like it was at 120.

Also, does the MD 500 have shocks on the skids to dampen ground resonance?

  • @BCAD01 Motor the starter prior to introducing fuel does indeed cool the tot. The hughes 369 and the MD500, both of which have the shocks on the skids to help with a softer landing but really to help keep ground resonance to a minimum.

  • Mike why don't you fly the Helicopter?

  • @20144628 Well, at least it's simple right now. The turbine and transmission is out. Hopefully sometime soon I can get back into it.

  • god I love hearing this bird start...so so so good..

  • in a life or death sitiation i think ive learned enough from youtube that i could probably fly one but very wobly

  • just a question, in the other start up video you see the percentage of the gas producer go slowly up between 40 and 60 per cent, and in this one after cooling down from 200 degrees the gas producer goes up very fast between 40 and 60. is it because of the higher TOT temperature that was before starting or did you simply inject more fuel?

  • @therealTOTOfan The first start was the first start of the morning, and the second was still when it was nice and warm. No additional fuel was injected. It has the Bendix system so it is all automatic. I'm not an expert in the turbine world yet, but because everything was already nice and warm (meaning fluids, bearings, etc), it allowed everything to start up faster. Good question.

  • @michaelmiller85 thanks for answering, just have another question.. now at the second startup here in this video i noticed the N1 was way above 13 per cent, if not 20 .. in order to get the TOT down below 150 ..so is that 13 per cent N1 not that much of a rule? i mean when the TOT might take so long to get below 150 that the N1 is lets say about 25 per cent, would you abort the start and try again after 60 sec or still introduce fuel? sorry for bothering xD

  • @michaelmiller85 alright Mike, lemme ask ya, how much time you got, what's your twenty, and will you relocate to fly the whiners? Just curious.

  • @groundfxdude I'm quickly approaching 1,900 hours total time, over 1,000 hours instructor time, 270 hours unaided night, 500+ hours cross-country. As of right now I'm here in the tourist area of the Smoky Mountain National Park in TN. Will I relocate, yes, depending on what the options are.

  • @michaelmiller85 how much turbine time, and what ships? By the bye; I did a little Smoky Mountain flying back in my younger, more foolish days. Beautiful place to pull some pitch...

  • Sex for the eardrums,what a great vidio//// post...thanks for sharing.

  • What a amazing video.. You never see just how long it takes to actually start one up in the movies and on television.. The MD500 has and probably always will be one of my most favorite helicopters..

  • how would the size of this compare to a bell 407 or a r44?

  • Next time I'm in the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge TN. area, I will take a tour with you guys! Do you go over Dollywood? I agree; nice ship! I took off in a red, white and blue 500C tour back in '94 out of PIE... yours is a much better ship!

  • Thanks for uploading that video Michael. Very informative.

  • Mike,I noticed you're wearing the seatbelt..is that required for startup? I also noticed at 3:42 that the tot was at about 180F...is that acceptable?????

  • @BCAD01 No it wasnt. he was right on the money at 150.

  • Very cool, i have always wondered how to start a helicopter.

  • Loach porn... Swear I want to lose my HC virginity to a 500... Not some Robbie... But I don't think there is one @ BNA... Cep the ones that watch me speed ;-)

  • Geez. Isn't that always the way? Younger enthusiast guy hovers around the machine obsessively, making vids and so on, then has to make way for older, wealthier fatso owner. Story of the World. Lovely bird, though. Thanks for the vids. I have a little bit of 500 time and I'd marry one given the chance.

  • Another question,if you have a hot start, will that cause the turbine to fail? And,I see you're holding the black button down on the collective,is that the ignitors you hold down?

  • Mike...do you get pic time for that?

  • @BCAD01 - That is a good question. I'm checked out in the aircraft, but when I only start it up I can't log that time because i don't have the intention of actual flight. I need to check the regulations again.

  • Yes and no. That is one of my bosses that fly it. I try to get in when ever I can just to get a little turbine experience.

  • When the real pilot gets in to fly, he will have to reajust the bealts, are you the rampy that starts the helicopters up.

  • Nice video...

  • You need to make sure the area is clear prior to starting an aircraft that is for sure. As far is yelling CLEAR, I would have yelled it but I had several people that were already making sure the area was clear prior to starting.

  • Shoudln´t you say "CLEAR" just before you press the start button?

  • Hi Mike - what is the procedure if it looks like a hot start is about to occur (TOT spiking)?

  • Comment removed

  • super nice Mike, what a dream to fly the 500C, Sky Porsche

  • nice vid :)

  • It's isn't my R22, but yes, we do do intro flights. Come on by if you want and we'll go up and have a good time.

  • That is a really nice chopper.. The sound of a turnbine just gets my blood flowing!

Mike do you do intro flights in your R22?
