Well, I didn't do an update for several weeks. And still my PS3 died a month ago after 4 (!) years of toil (though I didn't use it too often, I was busy with my thesis). Moreover, after the YLOD happened I could turn my PS3 on a few times and it was working for 5-10 seconds each time. Then it died for good. So, it doesn’t look like the YLOD is strictly tied to a software update.

my 60gb got ylod after 3 years of owning it brand new, kept it well ventilated to, and Sony you do rip your customers off big time, 1 year warranty with a product that aint cheap for most people, should at least give out a 2 year one, and after fixing the ylod by the engineers, the ylod appears again after about 3 to 8 months & the slimline ones are just the same fucking shit with ylod/ red blinking light, SORT IT OUT SONY like you did with your psn when it got hacked into.

Guys seriously just fix your YLOD'd ps3's using the oven method (100cent for 5 mins 200cent 10 mins cool off 30 mins re-paste cpu/gpu re-assemble) recover your game disks then just sell them on while they are working and get a 360, I've had RROD 360's repaired them myself using heat gun method (being very careful and also remember to bolt down the board to the chassis first to avoid warping the board) and they go on for at least another 6 months before have any other issues
like if we should sue Sony for making people pay for something they wont acknowledge even though they know there is something wrong even when they sell them

@orbnix Mine too, I downloaded wipe-out and it was fine. Then I downloaded Infamous and I got the infamous yellow light of death. Wtf. I called Sony only to have a machine tell me that they couldn't take my call due to high traffic and try again later.

The thermical paste is once problem, because every updates by Sony is a potential cause of YLOD too. Some firmware can write on some hidden directory the countdown to the console's death :( So, the first way was better didn't sign up the console...

@sussex113 it may just be too far gone, my ps3 yellow lighted but had no burn marks like some consoles I have seen. Also it may have not reflowed fully. Either way once the console has yellow lighted once its just a matter of time before its totally gone.
tried the hair dryer, didn't work, took it apart and cooked the board in the oven for 10 minutes and letting it cool in the oven for about 20 minutes. Put it back together (without compound) and it booted right up. But due to not using any compound on the processors it gets hot real quick and shuts down. So to the kiddies HAVE COMPOUND READY!!! Arctic Silver is the best.
@sussex113 I set it to 400 and let it warm up, then I turn it off and open the door to let it vent a little bit. I used a piece of cardboard with a slot cut for the 2 battery poles and placed it on the center rack making sure nothing was touching metal. let it cook for about 10 to 15 minutes, crack the oven open a little bit and let the board cool in the oven, that ensures nothing cools to quickly and cracks further.
Hi all, I had the dreaded YLOD on mine, had system 80gb for about 3 years no probs and then this morning during 5 mins of dvd playback it turned itself off and then got the red blinking light.
I got vacum cleaner out cleaned all the ports and then took a hairdryer to back vents by power connection for 10 mins, then blew cold air on it for 5 mins to cool it back down. It worked first time... just fingers crossed it stays working.
guys dont pull your ps3 apart just put a hair dryer facing the back vent for10 mins and then put a fan behind it blowing into the back vents again for 15 mins then it will work it just did for me!
sony customer service are amazing my warranty was OUT 1 year and they still replaced it for free (but it wasn't the yellow light of death) though the RROD on the xbox got me 3 times lol
@james09uk most likely not it is highly likely it is the cpu or gpu. which gets hot and diconnects from the motherboard after a wile because the sauder cracks. i think sony did it on purpose.

But it just broke again just 10 months later for a second time. make sure that you dip it and kinda like marinate the whole board in solder flux and then thaw it out in a microwave for a cople of minutes then put in the oven
i heard you might get better results taking a giant pressure cooker and put the board in there
not i believe this only works for the cechh01 models becuase the board is small to fit so the pressure would compress it in there and it would make the solder nice and wattery so it wouldn't dry up again

This problem can be fixed with a bit of cleaning, a heat gun and some thermal grease, overheating issue. just seard YLOD fix, theres serveral vids showing the process , cost is all of 40 bones, 20 for a cheap heat gun from crappytire and 20 for the grease from Staples. much better then shipping it off to sony and paying out the ass plus waiting a month for shipping... an hr or two of your time and these things will get back to playing most likely COD Black ops, ;)

@sussex113 it may just be too far gone, my ps3 yellow lighted but had no burn marks like some consoles I have seen. Also it may have not reflowed fully. Either way once the console has yellow lighted once its just a matter of time before its totally gone.

tried the hair dryer, didn't work, took it apart and cooked the board in the oven for 10 minutes and letting it cool in the oven for about 20 minutes. Put it back together (without compound) and it booted right up. But due to not using any compound on the processors it gets hot real quick and shuts down. So to the kiddies HAVE COMPOUND READY!!! Arctic Silver is the best.

@sussex113 I set it to 400 and let it warm up, then I turn it off and open the door to let it vent a little bit. I used a piece of cardboard with a slot cut for the 2 battery poles and placed it on the center rack making sure nothing was touching metal. let it cook for about 10 to 15 minutes, crack the oven open a little bit and let the board cool in the oven, that ensures nothing cools to quickly and cracks further.

Hi all, I had the dreaded YLOD on mine, had system 80gb for about 3 years no probs and then this morning during 5 mins of dvd playback it turned itself off and then got the red blinking light.
I got vacum cleaner out cleaned all the ports and then took a hairdryer to back vents by power connection for 10 mins, then blew cold air on it for 5 mins to cool it back down. It worked first time... just fingers crossed it stays working.
P.S Sony suck at customer service.

guys dont pull your ps3 apart just put a hair dryer facing the back vent for10 mins and then put a fan behind it blowing into the back vents again for 15 mins then it will work it just did for me!

@james09uk most likely not it is highly likely it is the cpu or gpu. which gets hot and diconnects from the motherboard after a wile because the sauder cracks. i think sony did it on purpose.

mine got YLOD too. I was Gutted. I got it second hand from a friend (good condition) All fine, until one day i come back home, i feel like playing my PS3, YLOD. I also had a friend who had this problem. He got it from over playing it(Rock Band Endless Playlist)

@BaseballStar36 the first time i sent mine in it took about 4 days to get the shipping box, then after i mailed it that day it took about another 12 days to get it back. But it just broke again just 10 months later for a second time. (i don't abuse it). im seriously starting to think Sony is scamming us, just to make up for the revenue the are missing from not charging for online gaming.

I was thinking maybe it would be better to take the console to bits first, then wrap it in silver foil and put it in the microwave for 30mins but baste it every 10 mins so it wont go crispy this time. what do you think? good idea er? make sure that you dip it and kinda like marinate the whole board in solder flux and then thaw it out in a microwave for a cople of minutes then put in the oven
i heard you might get better results taking a giant pressure cooker and put the board in there
not i believe this only works for the cechh01 models becuase the board is small to fit so the pressure would compress it in there and it would make the solder nice and wattery so it wouldn't dry up again

This problem can be fixed with a bit of cleaning, a heat gun and some thermal grease, overheating issue. just seard YLOD fix, theres serveral vids showing the process , cost is all of 40 bones, 20 for a cheap heat gun from crappytire and 20 for the grease from Staples. much better then shipping it off to sony and paying out the ass plus waiting a month for shipping... an hr or two of your time and these things will get back to playing most likely COD Black ops, ;)

Is it still YLOD if your PS3 is on and working anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes before it freezes and does the YLOD? I don't have it instantly like all these videos show, the PS3 works for a short amount of time.
