i was playing a friend in this and he was using Shiek and i was using Fox, every-time he had his shield up and i did a dair on him, he grabbed me before i even hit the ground... why?
@StriCNYN3 Are you supposed to do that everytime? Because i always started my dairs as soon as possible... could that be the reason why i have trouble doing shffl's sometimes, because i either don't cancel properly or im not able to use the reflector when i land
@MrJasonekos It's best to start your shffls as late as possible, because when you first hit your opponent's shield, their shield is being stunned, and the beginning of a shffl'd attack deals more stun than the middle-end of your attack, which makes the difference between you being grabbed or not.
Not saying you shouldn't mix up the timing, but doing shffls so early helps your opponent read your attack patterns easier. So throw in some late shffls and late ones too.
@MrJasonekos Also, about not cancling moves at times, it depends on what aerial you're doing. For example, Falco's bair finishes its animation faster than his dair, and it cancels itself out before you land, meaning you don't have to L cancel his bair, unlike his dair in which you have to at all times.
I haven't seen you play, but maybe you're trying to L cancel moves that don't need to be since you said you do shffls asap and are over pressing things?

And onto the cancelling; the real move i have trouble with is Fox's dair to shine -- i am inconsistent with it and the correct timing seems random at time, and for some reason i try doing the same timing with a dair to a jab, or down A and it works fine, but for some reason when i try to transition the dair into a shine it doesn't work half the time

@TheAnkielFan24 Oh sure, to shine-bair, just shine -> jump -> bair. It's the same for both Fox and Falco. It's harder to pull of with Fox however since your opponent doesn't fly upward when shined.
I have a (maybe embaressing ^^ ) question: When i want to upsmash (up --> A NOT smash attack) my Falco always jumps because I tilt up ^^ how do you do a normal upsmash without jumping -.- ?
I wanna learn falco, I got short hops l cancels and fast falls down, I can short hop laser fast fall, I can tech, but I'm having trouble with some other things. I can't waveshine or waveland well, nor can I multishine. And I need waveshine to learn pillaring... help?
@Zachattax64 try first to jump cancel (short hop) a normal down + B shine. (down + B --> as fast as possible jump) If you are able to jump cancel it, try wavedashing after pressing X/Y: down + B --> X/Y --> L/R + left/right. If you are good in wavedashing it should be no problem to learn waveshining because you just have to jump cancel the shine very fast then turning into a normal wavedash
even with Brawl Plus, it still doesn't allow for this kinda stuff, recently gone back to melee and it's so much more fun, especially since Ganondorf is actually fun to use again, but i got to get used to the quick movements and short hops in this game again
I still think this is a great video. I love Falco but I am definitely at a plateau because I still haven't mastered L-cancelling for air attacks which is a fucking huge deal haha. I'm about as good as I can be until I learn that. Wish melee had online :( I don't want a Wii.
@Fi5hRock5 It's really just how you feel most comfortable jumping and airdodging with, so if you press the X button to jump and R to airdodge, then that's cool.
and yea, you don't have to hold directly left or right to Wavedash. You can hold diagonally downwards left or right to make it a little easier. Just keep in mind that the more you hold towards left or right, the smoother and further your Wavedashes will be. Hope that helped a little =D

Also: For people who can't wavedash, try working on your timing better and train with other characters first. Fox & Falco are really hard characters to wavedash with.
If you're having trouble... Hold down the control stick with your left index finger. Use your left thumb to push B and your right thumb to push Y or X. Spam the shit out of it in the order BYB, like stupid fast, like "how the fuck is that even suppose to register" fast. Then, once you get the feel of how it works go for BYBYB and so forth and so forth. The trick though is the hand transition.
@mehd0gbRdme You just have to keep on practicing the timing to do them more consistently. You should practice with some of you friends if they play to get the feeling down.
@mehd0gbRdme Focus on just l cancelling with normal hop first. L cancelling is most important out of them, and it's hard to get them all at once. Once you can perfectly l cancel with short hop, you'll eventually get fastfall with time.
Hey im having trouble with falco's wavedash but not with fox's wavedash and when i try to waveshine i try the wavedash and he will just jump even though I hit r. Any tips?
@ninjacrusuader I think you may be just pressing R too fast. Falco has a little delay when he starts up his jump. It's not like Fox where he lifts from the ground immediately. So just take Falco's timing into consideration when trying to Wavedash and Waveshine. Hope that helped =D
@nikkie91210 Well, you can't actually Chain grab like Marth or Fox. I guess the best word is to say that Falco's Chain grabs aren't "guaranteed" like those two characters are. That said, I was able to land an Up throw -> Nair -> Up throw combo a few times, but it's very situational and depends on your opponent's DI.
@cardstrader I would say so. It depends on what's most comfortable for you, but Y does make moves easier since its closer to your thumb from the A button than X
Is there a trick to shining a player and jumping after them? It seems when I shine when no one is around I can jump out of it much faster than if someone is on the receiving end of it.
Question: Is there anything called a shine-cancel? It seems like some people can do the shine shield way more quickly, in and out of it, than I can manage. Is it just a matter of the finger speed and how quickly you press the "b" button or a matter of being in the air or what? Every time I try to shine spike, I seem to end up killing myself. Thanks for posting this video though. I'm working up Fox right now and my friend Falco. We'll be watching this every weekend. I'd love to see more!
@wabitgirl Yea its a matter or finger speed. When you're trying to Multi-Shine, as soon as your foot leaves the ground, press the B button as fast as you can, then just keep repeating it. Hope that helps a little.

@wabitgirl there's a flicking motion. flick the stick down to shine, but as soon as you press B, flick it back up, and you'll immediately jump out of it. doing it this way (rather than using Y or X) clears up your right thumb for aerials, so you might as well learn the right way.

Keep practicing, man. Try shorthopping, laser, wait a few frames to let him fire a shot, fastfall, then repeat. Maybe you forgot to fastfall. Or maybe your timing is a tad off. I'm working on mine, although I think my SHL is good enough to get by. Gotta perfect that laser, it's an impotant and handy thing to have in battle, man. Miss one frame and the next frame, you could lose one stock.
Hey! Just two quick questions. What do you use to record your videos? If the device you use is expensive, do you have maybe a cheap but decent quality capture card or something else that might help me record some combo videos?
@RubixClan The capture device I used for this video was an Easy Cap, and it was cheap. It was only at least $30-40. The thing is though, since it was cheap, the audio ended up not working anymore. So I recommend you buying a more expensive one, if you want something more reliable. Maybe you should get a Dazzle. I think those are cheap too.

@p4w4 Hmm, what you have to do is when you jump (press the Y button or X button), you see Falco getting ready to lift into the air. When you see this, press the L or R button to make him air dodge (Make sure that he is as close to the ground as possible when doing so). Finally, while in the middle of the air dodge, hold the control stick to the left or right to go in any direction you wish to go. This might take a little time getting used to, but you will get the hang of it. Hoped this helped =D
@AceOfHearts65 and how are they glitches? L canceling was intended and was introduced since the 1st SSB. Wavedashing was already noticed by the creators during testing and decided to leave it in.

Nah, you can fast fall without L-canceling and vice-versa.
Also, for the timing of L-canceling, It's pretty hard to explain the timing for it. Basically you want to press the L button after you do an aerial (only A button attacks) 3/4 of a second before you hit the ground. It also depends on which character you use too because of how fast they fall. Try using someone like Ganon to get the idea of it first, then use whoever you want when you feel more comfortable. That's what I did at least

Yeah, you can hold downwards to the left or right too, just not upwards, or you'll just Airdodge. And yes, you can also L- cancel with the R button (I find it easier to use R so I can wavedash out of it faster)
well i got my wavedashing down and now to include it into my attacks. Although im having trouble with edge guarding, i can't recover fast enough. So im just going to stick to jumping off the edge and spiking them down xD
I find it a lot harder and less mobility to FastFall Dair with the analog rather than FastFall Dair using the Cstick. I also want to know if I don't fast fall my dair using analog but I do lcancel it and shine, can they still shield grab me?
Well, I use the analog because I'm very use to the feel, but yea, I recommend starting off with the Cstick, especially when pillaring, so you can space your Dairs and other aerials better.
It depends on your opponent's timing, but you will most likely get grabbed if you dont Fastfall after an aerial approach.
Not if you L-cancel perfectly. Just use good spaceing when your not sure of yourself. Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Concentrate on specific things that you need to improve on instead of mindless play to get better. Set a goal. You'll be fine.

I'm inspired, StriCNYN3. Just yesterday, I booted up my old copy of Melee, but after playing Brawl for so long, I couldn't adjust, and I have up in frustration. This video makes me want to keep at it.

Nice, im working on my Falco. I recently changed from marth to falco as my main. I am learning the basics of pillaring, but my waveshining is kind of slow....thank god its summer. This video helped alot with my double lasers aswell.

3rd: Shine

@wabitgirl Yea its a matter or finger speed. When you're trying to Multi-Shine, as soon as your foot leaves the ground, press the B button as fast as you can, then just keep repeating it. Hope that helps a little.
I wish I could make more vids of these, but my pc would find a way to just mess it all up =/

@wabitgirl there's a flicking motion. flick the stick down to shine, but as soon as you press B, flick it back up, and you'll immediately jump out of it. doing it this way (rather than using Y or X) clears up your right thumb for aerials, so you might as well learn the right way.

Keep practicing, man. Try shorthopping, laser, wait a few frames to let him fire a shot, fastfall, then repeat. Maybe you forgot to fastfall. Or maybe your timing is a tad off. I'm working on mine, although I think my SHL is good enough to get by. Gotta perfect that laser, it's an impotant and handy thing to have in battle, man. Miss one frame and the next frame, you could lose one stock.

Hey! Just two quick questions. What do you use to record your videos? If the device you use is expensive, do you have maybe a cheap but decent quality capture card or something else that might help me record some combo videos?

@RubixClan The capture device I used for this video was an Easy Cap, and it was cheap. It was only at least $30-40. The thing is though, since it was cheap, the audio ended up not working anymore. So I recommend you buying a more expensive one, if you want something more reliable. Maybe you should get a Dazzle. I think those are cheap too.

You might be jumping to soon when you get off the edge. Try to wait a half second later than you usually jump off then laser as you go up.

i need help with the wavedash, because i press. "Y" and then "L" but falco jump a little (the half of a short jump) and if I press "L" inmediatly after "Y" it doesnt work the "L effect" (inmunity)

@p4w4 Hmm, what you have to do is when you jump (press the Y button or X button), you see Falco getting ready to lift into the air. When you see this, press the L or R button to make him air dodge (Make sure that he is as close to the ground as possible when doing so). Finally, while in the middle of the air dodge, hold the control stick to the left or right to go in any direction you wish to go. This might take a little time getting used to, but you will get the hang of it. Hoped this helped =D

Nah, you can fast fall without L-canceling and vice-versa.
Also, for the timing of L-canceling, It's pretty hard to explain the timing for it. Basically you want to press the L button after you do an aerial (only A button attacks) 3/4 of a second before you hit the ground. It also depends on which character you use too because of how fast they fall. Try using someone like Ganon to get the idea of it first, then use whoever you want when you feel more comfortable. That's what I did at least

Yeah, you can hold downwards to the left or right too, just not upwards, or you'll just Airdodge. And yes, you can also L- cancel with the R button (I find it easier to use R so I can wavedash out of it faster)

well i got my wavedashing down and now to include it into my attacks. Although im having trouble with edge guarding, i can't recover fast enough. So im just going to stick to jumping off the edge and spiking them down xD

I find it a lot harder and less mobility to FastFall Dair with the analog rather than FastFall Dair using the Cstick. I also want to know if I don't fast fall my dair using analog but I do lcancel it and shine, can they still shield grab me?

Well, I use the analog because I'm very use to the feel, but yea, I recommend starting off with the Cstick, especially when pillaring, so you can space your Dairs and other aerials better.
It depends on your opponent's timing, but you will most likely get grabbed if you dont Fastfall after an aerial approach.

Not if you L-cancel perfectly. Just use good spaceing when your not sure of yourself. Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Concentrate on specific things that you need to improve on instead of mindless play to get better. Set a goal. You'll be fine.

I'm inspired, StriCNYN3. Just yesterday, I booted up my old copy of Melee, but after playing Brawl for so long, I couldn't adjust, and I have up in frustration. This video makes me want to keep at it.
Who knows, maybe I'll master Falco some day. That'll be a treat... with the skill I'd gain from your video, I'd finally be able to beat my brother at Melee after four years of crushing defeats, and with his own character, no less.

Nice, im working on my Falco. I recently changed from marth to falco as my main. I am learning the basics of pillaring, but my waveshining is kind of slow....thank god its summer. This video helped alot with my double lasers aswell.

Falco can't shorthop fastfall double lasers, only Fox can.
Falco also can't waveshine, as the knockback on his shine DRs and is as a base different than fox's.

Oh and by the way dude Technically Pillaring is when you mix up dair to shine comboing to eat away at your opponent's shield lol.
What you were showing in the video was just a Falco combo. Pillaring doesn't cause the damage percentage to rise.
