Transylvania belonged to Hungary from 896 to 1526. Between 1526 and 1690 it was a separate country with hungarian leadership (except for the short time period of 1599-1600), after 1690 it became the part of the Kingdom of Hungary.
Transylvania only became a part of Romania in 1918 (de jure 1920 with the Treaty of Trianon).
