It took me 15 years to know the title of this divine hymn till tonight when it got featured in an instant Netflix movie I watched searching for it in its title credits... thanks so much for uploading it.
Hi My GuitarGntlyWeeps, as a former US naval officer, I recall singing this hymn more then 30 years ago. It is a wonderful hymn that came from the UK. Because we call it the US NavyHymn, in no way diminishes the fact that someone over on your side of the pond composed it. Over my naval career I have had the privilege of serving with many of the best of British sailors, and every Sunday, we all sang this wonderful hymn. I hope you understand we, on both sides of the pond are Brothers in arms.
US Navy hymn?, Nothing against our friends over the pond but this has been the mariners hymn in the UK as long as we have had mariners, I trust we still have a navy and god bless them.
ORKOdudley - you're not being asked to buy into it. Trust me when you have got to the limits of what you can do and you have got to the limits of what your boat can do there is only one person to ask............. I am not religious however I am RNLI crew and even with the best training and the best equipment sometimes a little help dosen't go amiss..........
@MAI742 You seem to have misunderstood me. You said "I don't believe in atheism". This is fine if you're using "believe" to stake out your preferences, ie. "I don't believe people should fight wars."
However, in this context, you are essentially saying you do not accept the existence of atheism. This is akin to saying "I don't believe in cheese" or "I don't believe in the sun", which would make you ignorant, hence the original response.
@hugboxx True. Though personally, I would in your position be far more likely to simply label the issuer of such a statement a troll than be bothered with proper analysis.
The Lord says: these people serve me with their lips but their hearts are far from Me. It is only after the ship started sinking that they started singing with their whole hearts to God, it is often like that in life. We have other little idols like our bank accounts that we trust on except only on the Lord
Thankyou for putting this vid up. Yesterday was my Nanas funeral, this was one of the songs we sang in her honour. It helps that i can hear it here (and well sung toO)
I am glad that I came across this video, as it too reminds me when I was going through Marine Corps boot camp, this was the first time I had heard this song and every Sunday at the end of the worship service, we would end with this song. God bless our troops and protect them from any harm. God bless America.
I went to a naval training school for five years 1945-1949. we sung the first and last verses every morning at prayers and every evening and three times on a sunday. i also joined the Royal Navy and sung it a few times when their was a death. Still make the hairs on neck stand up and also have shed a few tears singing it
My father sang this hymn in Port Arthur, Texas at St. John's Lutheran Church. Many an old sea captain had tears in their eyes while the song was sung. Many were the memories of a life at sea. I pray that God will bless them all.
This is my favorite service hymn. I'm a former Marine, but the Navy hymn is the one I connect most to.
The video is great too; notice the very last wave that breaks behind the light-house. It shows the true scale all that wave action against the breakwater leading out to the lighthouse. That one wave is almost as high as the light-house itself.

The video is great too, notice the very last wave that breals behind the light-house. It shows the scale of that one wave and brings all the rest into proper proportion visually..
thank you for posting this. my father served on board the USS Interprise, USS Independence where he was a plankowner during the cuban missle crisis, and many other ships during his navy career. he passed on 4-24-08 of conjestive heart failure. only GOD knows the pain in my heart for him. he was buried in the med. i have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and pray,,,,,
Dad, please watch over me and wait for me, I Love You,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Like you my dad served as a plank owner on the cv10 the USS. Yorktown
he like so many of our service dads are passing at an alarming rate.
I lost dad in 1990 of heart disease. the good news is that he accepted Jesus as Lord and Messiah and is being comforted . in His presence. I too hold on to the same hope.
I was sorry to hear of the diagnosis of CA recently. Be assured that Jesus Cares deeply for you and your future.
@gunvor69 Yes. It applies to all Naval services. When I was in Marine Recruit Training, we sand this in Chapel on Sundays. There's a couple verses of the song devoted to Marines, and plenty to the Navy.
I live close to Halifax, and I can just imagine what it was like when they sung this in the maritime sailor's cathedral that day. Getting to sing this for Remembrance Day is an incredible experience. We are losing our veterans...please don't let their sacrifices be forgotten.
Ironic that this was one of the feature hymns in the Sunday service of the Titanic- 16 hours before it began sinking... and then those in board actually became 'those in peril on the sea'.
@October31st1517 - just goes to show none of us know the hour when we shall be called to account for our life. May I use my time and my life giving glory to God, so when the time comes, I may be glad to see Him face to face .
In addition, stored this in my favorites.

Dear jkilts, this song would not have been sung on the Titanic because the song was not printed in a hymnal until 1940.

For some reason it always gives me goose bumps and I am not even Christian. It's a beautiful hymn, solemn and and stately, the way a HYMN should be.

Bless those who give their healing care
That life and laughter all might share"
