  • walking alone for 3-4 hours is so boring. if only i could take talks like this with me :(

  • @krijassnica You can. I download university lectures and discussions between intellectuals, and then save them on my phone. Whenever I have to make a tedious journey on the bus, train or on foot, I listen to lectures, and thus I'm no longer bored!

  • Schopenhauer over Hegel anyday

  • @SwordInAir Schopenhauer believed in pederasty, fucking boys in the ass.

  • Thanks for uploading

  • Mind is the ultimate reality... sounds like a Ayahusca trip... I mean that in a positive sense.

  • I still don't understand Hegel. I don't think I ever will.

  • The Hegelian ontology of dialectical change seems to reflect what modern science takes as the fundamental characteristic behind all of reality, namely the dynamism betwixt complcated elements and their intermediate results. Liebniz implied this as well. It's strange that these thinkers intuitively grasped something that was not quite within their reach in their times.

  • Hey, compare the beginning of this video with this:

“Anthony Quinton on Spinoza and Leibniz: Section 2”

    watch?v=MHaHCxsMy28

Have you noticed that both of these videos begin with the same framing of Magge saying the same thing and making the exact same gesture? Is this only a coincidence?! I don’t know ;)

I really love the way he says “Total Reality”. I hope to see this occurring more often on the show.

  • So fortunate that my mom was american or else I wouldve never learned english as well and would never understand any of these videos or so many other interesting documentarys out there :) (also if hegel had a religion I would be a hegelist of short to speak hahah I very much aggree with what he says about spirituality and god)

  • @cristofolon: you would be a hegelian

  • excellent series. he's made hegel sounds so easy!

  • This is a very religious video. I bet it appeals to those that say that they dislike religion. Hegel was a sad and lost individual. More sad are people who buy into this false religion. Those who have faith that man is god. Very scary.

  • @MahanaimCh You say " sad are people who buy into this false religion. Those who have faith that man is god. Very scary."

Yeah, christians thinks that the Jesus guy was God. Sad and scary indeed.

  • Why isn't more television today like this? Or at least more youtube videos available like this - this is fantastic! This was a great introduction to Hegel for me.

  • What program was this on? This is obviously not a one time deal, the white haired guy is the shows host. I want to see more of this!

  • I'm so glad the BBC exists. Where on earth can you get a programme like this from commercial TV?

  • nice job...very informative...really learned alot...oh boy...

  • @EndureTemptation - True but unfortunately I don't live in a world where other people's ignorance doesn't affect me. But, nonetheless I think it totally does matter that at least we've seen it : )

  • This is the kind of content that elevates Youtube from mindless entertainment to useful learning tool.

  • Very clear explanation of Hegel's philosophy, cna't say the same with Italian videos.

  • Singer is austrailian right?

  • @sunsplash1980 very Australian.

  • i really hate hegel.doing a final on it tomorrow

  • I suspect that Hegel would hate being tied to Marx, and Marx would hate being tied to the movements in his name

  • @almosthuman27

This narrative of the Master whose imperfect students inevitably corrupt his teachings, of an original fount of wisdom that is eternally receding into the past, of the present as debased and tending toward a future of increasing decay and stupidity, this is a perfect example of alienated and unhappy consciousness

  • are hindus pagans? or panthiest?

  • They can be both

  • omg i think singer's tash has a whole life of its own

  • Obviously you mean it has a "geist"of its own. ;)

  • im sorry but didn't he already ask 'what is Hegel working towards?' in part one??

  • In Antithesis to this video, MrAllenBloom's channel features a critique of historicism by Leo Strauss; search his name and Heidegger as search terms on youtube to find it.

  • Leo Strauss is a Nazi and a fascist and the philosopher that the neocons, today's fascists, take as their foundation.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, radical nationalistic socialists with imperial agenda's.

  • Leo Strauss was a jew and hardly a Nazi. His view of politics seems rather anti-democratic and somewhat elitist, but it's not clear to me that that should be called "fascist".

  • History as a mind, like a world spirit, is interesting. How this is tied into God or the supernatural is not so clear.

Interesting as it is, I fail to see how this thinking is useful as a world view.

  • drop some LSD.

you will see that Hegel is right

  • nice!

  • with hegelry, not only you can prove the existense of god, show that history has a purpose, demonstrate the holiness of the state, but also unite all of universe, math, science, art, religion and philosophy into SPIRIT which unfolds itself within itself for itself

  • @mrfatd The only true comment I have ever seen on a youtube video ever.I applaud you.You made my day.

  • cheers

  • this is brilliant. thanks so much for posting these videos.

  • this is so helpful

  • these videos are great, they are an immense resource in additon to reading the texts.

  • I can't believe that this video with Peter Singer, an actual intellectual and philosopher, has way less hits than youtube bloggers that don't have any idea what they're talking about or at best are only regurgitating ideas of other people. This is so sad!

  • Yeah, look at how many hits Brookers got...

  • its realy sad, but its teh Zeitgeist of our time!

  • @JenNessis88 I've checked on videos by chomsky and even one from dawkins where I was literally the 1st person to comment. some people just really don't give a shit about learning *shrugs*

  • @JenNessis88 Here! Here!

  • @JenNessis88

Don't let it bother you. You yourself watched it. Isn't that enough.

  • @JenNessis88 And his moustache alone is worth watching.

  • @JenNessis88 but is pride not as "bad" as ignorance?

  • P.S. thanks for posting these up, Flame.

  • Hegel's arrogance is so bad ass.

  • Is this a joke?

  • The Lebanese Philosopher, Khalil Jibran Khalil says in his book of wisdom, Is it God who created man or Man who created god?

  • yeah, except I think Nietzsche said it first

  • And Buddha even earlier.

  • These people didn't reach awareness of their self or self knowledge, with this kind of clothing and hair style.

  • LOL... Well, give them a break; after all, Hegel would also agree that they are, at the end of the day, product of their historical moment, i.e. late 80s, early 90s? LOL

  • thanks for uploading these some of the best videos on philosophy just dont call the fasion police!

  • And just look at the dialectic taking place in these comments.

  • 1/2I interpret Hegel as saying that Man is one of the vehicles by which the Absolute creates reality. Through reason, man pushes back the darkness of disorder, uncovering underlying structure which is then affirmed.

Hegel aslo says that this process has about it the element , not of creating knowledge but of remembering knowledge. In other words it is part of us.

  • a very good introduction, Singer is a good speaker, very clear

  • 2/2It is from this also that alienation arises. Man is alienate by observing the contrast between his condition and the special creature he is. When a creature that is closely linked to the Absolute is degraded and debased it experiences the emotion of alienation.

I see something very closely between the ideas of Hegel and those of Quantum Mechanics.

  • these interviews make excellent introductions, but also illustrate a shortcoming of anglo-saxon philosophy or philosophers: ignorance. eg ayer thinks meinong is german; most interviewees can neither pronounce names or concepts of french or german philosophers correctly, let alone latin. some comments on hegel are rubbish. comments on kant and leibniz by their intellectual inferiors, as they inevitably must be, suggest intellectual inadequacy is erroneously sought in the philosophers discussed.

  • They're not exactly new videos?

  • quite true. unfortunately, the language and content issues persist. hegel's cautionary comment might have been: die philosophie erfaehrt haeufig die verachtung, dass auch solche, die sich mit ihr nicht bemueht haben, die einbildung aussprechen, sie verstehen von haus aus, was es mit dieser wissenschaft fuer eine bewandtnis habe, und seien faehig, wie sie so in einer gewoehnlichen bildung gehen und stehen, zu philosophieren und ueber sie zu urteilen.

  • I'm guessing not lol. And it would appear that that guy never had any hair!

  • This notion that the rational is the real and the real is the rational is very Parmenidean, I think. A very interesting talk and good exposition by Singer. Magee, as usual, is excellent. Thank you for presenting this.

  • Hegel actually never said that. Rudolf Haym in 1857 was the first to say Hegel did, and it became popularized when Friedrich Engels misquoted Hegel from memory in "Ludwig Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy". There is a good book that dispels many of the misconceptions of Hegel titled "Hegel Myths and Legends" by Jon Stewart. It was published by Northwestern University, I believe.

  • "Hegel actually never said that"

Thank you. I know that. I was reserring to Singer's words at the end. If you read the Parmenidean fragments alongside Hegel, you will understand what I mean.

  • It's a reflexive response when I hear people use that saying with Hegel, my apologies. But after all, Hegel did fuse Heraclitus with Parmenides, so it should be of no surprise to see similarities.

  • Sure. I agree it's a fairly common reflexive response, especially from folk who haven't actually read Hegel. And yes, what you say about the influence of Parmenides & Heraclitus is absolutely right.
