@SlimPickins09er Indeed they did but thankfully they managed to keep on truckin' =) Excellent video - Pigpen was just too kool-and i need to go and look for more video of him
Does this version not make the Black Crowe's version look sick, weakly and pathetic? I hated this song until I heard this and then it was like... oh yeah!
Wow I didnèt know video existed of this Calgary gig....this is right in my back yard...of course I was only 6 when this went down but my older brother and his buddy snuck into this concert and I think they saw Janis....
To anybody who was there, I've heard that the concerts were practically boycotted. It was felt by a lot of the politicos of that time that the music should be free. You can see that the stadium is nowhere near filled. I do know that the musicians had a great time in between concerts.
I’ve often wondered how the Dead would have been different if Pig, rest his soul, had not died. They were so much more bluesy with him. Love the Pig years. Great video thanks very much really enjoyed it
i will admit to being a lousy guitar player... but i can sing ok... and i'd like to think i'm a pretty fn good harmonica player.... stole half my licks from Ron , Pigpen... never met the guy , but Thx...
@Shiftyeyes516 white boy music? if you mean then they're one of the only honest white boy bands then i agree but if you mean their music is pure white music, i dunno. they were so groovy and cosmic that they took their folk/country roots and blew them into space, i cant call them white bou music. they didn't have a concrete agenda but shit they were trying to do something, they were gonna end the vietnam war by having a good time and expanding people's consciousnesses. they were revolutionary
When the Grateful Dead brought in Keith and Donna, I was starting to losing faith in them. Then they lost Pigpen and it was over for me. He was a big part of the band for me. He could sing fairly well, but I never cared that much for Jerry's whiny vocals. I didn't feel Donna offered that much at all except dancing around like an earth mama.
now this white man could sing the blues! foot tapping head bobbing goodness! never hear music like this again which is sad. grateful dead will always be a member of my family....proud to say!
@theguyIShere24 I hear ya. It's like we just missed the great wave. Dr. Hunter S. Thompson realized this. He saw the rise and fall. Perhaps we can create a new rise. An unending wave of Yes. You are here Now. Awaken your inner Shazam and co-create true Freedom. Yes Now Shazam.
i don't know how to upload on shroomerydotorg but i just had to put tell someone i just rolled a bomber out of the top dried leaves of my male plants.......and they work. they don't taste sweet--real bitter, but they fuckin work.......so hard to handle ma dm dm dmmm
@bigicecream182 hahaha , white people just can't dance cause Jesus might be watching !! they would have had more rythym if their was more acid in the crowd ...was a great tour ,
Wow. As somebody who's never really been into the Dead and only heard the radio-friendly stuff like "Truckin'" and "Casey Jones," listening to these guys rock out this hard and kick this much ass on this song is amazing.
Unlike the Stones, where it's all about Keefs right hand and Charlies right foot, the side shot reveals the Dead's secret: the drummers right hands, Bobby's right hand, and Jerry's left, all in sync somehow.
can't believe how few folks have seen this and commented... this is some amazing footage... probably the last thing like this to be done! There are reels of tape and film all over, but none have been pieced together like this and few ever will. This was assembled from 8 track recordings and synced up to mute 16mm film. Amazing
The Dead lost the soul sound when Pigpen died. RIP Pigpen

Amazing how small the drum kits were and the Mickey and Billy sound better here than they did when they had a million drums in the 80's and 90's.
