  • The Dead lost the soul sound when Pigpen died. RIP Pigpen

  • @SlimPickins09er Indeed they did but thankfully they managed to keep on truckin' =) Excellent video - Pigpen was just too kool-and i need to go and look for more video of him

  • Does this version not make the Black Crowe's version look sick, weakly and pathetic? I hated this song until I heard this and then it was like... oh yeah!

  • its scary to know 2 years from this...Pig would be dead...god..what I'd give for him, Jerry and Brent right now...to make the world turn right

  • smokin solo!

  • Incredible

  • bob was the perfect wingman for jerry. his rhythm was the perfect base for jerry's jams.

  • KILLER PIGPEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Blows me away that some 60 year old dude I ride the bus with could have been at this show all drunked up and high on shitty weed!!

  • @theonetruepickle Not to mention high powered acid blotters ;D

  • jerry's face at 2:34

  • Pig was 24 in this video. holy shit.

  • Pigpen was the f'in man! RIP brother! ~ mphsVinylJim & The Mrs

  • A healthy Pig and Jerry on an SG, love this.

  • Although potentially blasphemous, Mickey looks like BaBa Booey!!!

  • Pure Dead

  • The black crowes brought me here ;)

  • Wow I didnèt know video existed of this Calgary gig....this is right in my back yard...of course I was only 6 when this went down but my older brother and his buddy snuck into this concert and I think they saw Janis....

  • It is all still happening....once and forever a member of the Grateful Dead!

  • PIG!

  • To anybody who was there, I've heard that the concerts were practically boycotted. It was felt by a lot of the politicos of that time that the music should be free. You can see that the stadium is nowhere near filled. I do know that the musicians had a great time in between concerts.

  • I’ve often wondered how the Dead would have been different if Pig, rest his soul, had not died. They were so much more bluesy with him. Love the Pig years. Great video thanks very much really enjoyed it

  • That was rediculous! ...and that happended 40 years ago!

  • great vibes

  • Tut i was in the park in To for that concert.VERY trippy

  • Great show. I was there.

  • JUSTICE!

  • Pigpen was the white Otis

  • ron does this one the best

  • i will admit to being a lousy guitar player... but i can sing ok... and i'd like to think i'm a pretty fn good harmonica player.... stole half my licks from Ron , Pigpen... never met the guy , but Thx...

  • i am born way to late, ive missed out on a lot, what i grew up with was music so bad it could count as torture

  • Saw them in Toronto, - got to smoke a bowl with the boys. Free show in the park. Anybody out there?

  • Great vid, THANKS!

  • I like the GD because they were true honest white boy music - country soul - they were real - no agenda - just honest music. Pigpen was the truth.

  • @Shiftyeyes516 white boy music? if you mean then they're one of the only honest white boy bands then i agree but if you mean their music is pure white music, i dunno. they were so groovy and cosmic that they took their folk/country roots and blew them into space, i cant call them white bou music. they didn't have a concrete agenda but shit they were trying to do something, they were gonna end the vietnam war by having a good time and expanding people's consciousnesses. they were revolutionary

  • Pig, Jerry and the boys are cooking!!!

  • When the Grateful Dead brought in Keith and Donna, I was starting to losing faith in them. Then they lost Pigpen and it was over for me. He was a big part of the band for me. He could sing fairly well, but I never cared that much for Jerry's whiny vocals. I didn't feel Donna offered that much at all except dancing around like an earth mama.

  • now this white man could sing the blues! foot tapping head bobbing goodness! never hear music like this again which is sad. grateful dead will always be a member of my family....proud to say!

  • Jerry's pretty good on guitar here

  • @samharriman

    Pretty good ??? Hahaha ;)

    Y ^^

  • Why did I have to be born in 81? 1950 would have been perfect for me. Oh well, thank God for youtube!

  • @theguyIShere24 I hear ya. It's like we just missed the great wave. Dr. Hunter S. Thompson realized this. He saw the rise and fall. Perhaps we can create a new rise. An unending wave of Yes. You are here Now. Awaken your inner Shazam and co-create true Freedom. Yes Now Shazam.

  • i don't know how to upload on shroomerydotorg but i just had to put tell someone i just rolled a bomber out of the top dried leaves of my male plants.......and they work. they don't taste sweet--real bitter, but they fuckin work.......so hard to handle ma dm dm dmmm

  • haha everyone on the train got shitfaced drunk before the show lol

  • Miss you, Jerry.

  • pigpen is the man

  • Best cover of this song that I've ever heard!

  • @nickslespaul TRY THE BLACK CROWES LIVE AT WINTERLAND REUNION WITH MARC FORD ON GUITAR AND A COMPLETE HORN SECTION.....HEAVY.

  • LOVE how everyone in the crowd has no rhythm at all hahah. The whitest people ever. Not too many people in attendance though.

Great cover of a great song.

  • @bigicecream182 hahaha , white people just can't dance cause Jesus might be watching !! they would have had more rythym if their was more acid in the crowd ...was a great tour ,

  • I never knew this was a Dead song. Long live Pig Pen. Rest in peace.

  • @brianallancobb It's an Otis Redding song This is just a kick ass cover

  • @zzqqwwer

I've come to know this (Otis Redding tune). Kick-ass cover. Long live Pig Pen and may he rest in peace.

  • Ron was one of the nicest people I ever met. Great story teller.I miss him.lol

  • @marilynjan

Lucky you to have known him !

    Yum

  • Wow. As somebody who's never really been into the Dead and only heard the radio-friendly stuff like "Truckin'" and "Casey Jones," listening to these guys rock out this hard and kick this much ass on this song is amazing.

  • these festivel express shows are great

  • L♥ve ya so much Ron. Precious. God bless you. BEST thing about the Dead. ALWAYS in my heart. xx ...and thanks to yumgui for postin this. xx

  • wonder where that SG is at now a days and how much its worth...

  • Pigpen just ripped that song a new record hole! This is amazing! Thank you for sharing.

  • Unlike the Stones, where it's all about Keefs right hand and Charlies right foot, the side shot reveals the Dead's secret: the drummers right hands, Bobby's right hand, and Jerry's left, all in sync somehow.

  • I think Aug 6th 1971 is a better version, but this is awesome too!

  • Amazing how small the drum kits were and the Mickey and Billy sound better here than they did when they had a million drums in the 80's and 90's.

  • @ 1:48 guy/girl in green sweater got some good moves...Whoa!

  • badass

  • I'm more of a fan of '74 era dead , but man the boys really had a powerful mojo in 1970...ya just cant deny it!!!

  • awesome!! I am smiling!!!

  • THIS.IS.AMAZING.

  • that is great footage!!!!! Gotta love all the purplish shirts!!!!!

  • can't believe how few folks have seen this and commented... this is some amazing footage... probably the last thing like this to be done! There are reels of tape and film all over, but none have been pieced together like this and few ever will. This was assembled from 8 track recordings and synced up to mute 16mm film. Amazing

  • pure pure pure

  • Yep ;)

  • ALL of the DEAD...

    early yrs and what power...raw.

    i digg + i rate.

    {:--))

them never played the same thing twice...

super post and not blocked like the other one you got.

    Dead Ahead

  • @davidh0187dc -dirty dirty dirty...the way rock'n'roll should be!
