  • Johnny was from my hometown of Greenfield,Ohio and a good friend of my fathers..Rip Donny Lytle aka..Johnny Paycheck

  • I think the country/pop wannabe musicians of today need to take a tip from a guy like Paycheck and this video is a great example of that. Simple, stripped down, and no soulful run-on notes is what makes this song work. More importantly, not one sour note came out of Johnny's mouth when he sang this live. Great song from a great musician. RIP, Paycheck!

  • I like mr paycheck!!!!!

  • real country

  • I got to see this guy in 96 or 97 for $5 in Bismarck, ND. What a great show. Take notes, modern wannabees. THIS is the real deal!!!

  • thata boy!

  • Country stations prefer Tim Mc Graw and kenny chesney to REAL country! GRRRRR!

  • Love this song!

  • GREAT TUNE ....LOVE IT !!!!! This song has had special meaning for my husband and now it is just as special to me...lol Still a great song Johnny .

  • I think Jamie Johnson is our new modern day Hank Williams Jr. I'm 27, and when I'm 50 Jamie is one of the VERY few guys I'm gonna be remembering. Johnny Paycheck is my ultimate hero though. I can't say that he's ever really written a song that isn't sad, but he is the king of sad songs for sure! We love you Johnny Paycheck!!! R.I.P.

  • i always wondered what his real last name was. i can still remember they having this old juke box in the pool hall owned by this old lady and she bitching about the kids playing his song take this job and shove it. she always threatned to take it off because it was just to dirty to listen to she said. the devils music. lol man how times have sure changed huh? it doesnt hurt to raise a little hell every now and then. lol godbless.

  • @39tommyboy

Donny Young wasn't his real name. That was one of his first stage names, then he changed it to Johnny Paycheck. His real was Donald Eugene Lytle. Actually, I just did a search on Wikipedia too... it's quite interesting, check it out:

    h t t p: // en. wikipedia. org / wiki / Johnny_Paycheck

  • I have loved Johnny Paycheck since I was knee high to a grasshopper! His music always "hit" me!

  • This is one of my all time favorire songs by one of my all time favorite performers.

  • he sounds a little bit like david allen coe.

  • @baldy194859 that'd be the other way around, i love alot of DAC, but he did everything he could to sound like other singers.. and get noticed by singin about it,, interview with the hagg made it clear,, they asked if he was an "outlaw".. he said no, and i aint david allan coe, i dont run around tellin everyone i'm a fuckin outlaw either.. (rolling stone?)

  • Johnny Paycheck is the best of the best this is Real Country !

  • Thank God for old tape and youtube!

  • I opened for Paycheck at the football field in High school. The cops showed up...

  • This man dont sing about pain.He pours it out naturally from the bottom of his soul and makes life so much a better place for millons of broken hearts.

Johnny aint a musician he is a Country Soul singing Doctor that cure heart aches that no medication will ever heal.

  • The real deal. Not a child molester. Shot a man after a show in a bar that wanted to jump him. Really self defense. When to Chillicothe. Came out and continued to perform. Yes when he died he was broke. Like many arstist. But Johnny " Donnie" Paycheck left the workin man' s athem. " Take This Job And Shove It" And please don' t forget " The Man From Bowling Green" There are so many great songs that Johnny performed. Hear them all.

  • he was not a child molester he shot a man in the head in a bar room fight

  • i like his music to folks but hes a child molester do some history u will find it 1988 12 year old

  • @bailey4jesus First of all I have watched an interview on him and it wasn't a 12 year old she was 14 and she told him she was 19.

  • @bailey4jesus yeah I thought the same thing but u should do your history...14 years old and she said she was 19.....don't blame him cause some underage slut wanted money, granted he prolly should have checked her I.D. but that kinda ruins the mood don't you think? How many people ask for an I.D. when someone is getting hot an heavy with them...not saying it's ok just giving another perspective

  • When he passed away, they couldnt even afford a head stone. George Jones bought him one.........Sad!What a great singer & entertainer! RIP Donnie!

  • What year was this from?

  • Just great country

  • Solid Country Classic!

  • Lets play a game!! Paycheck and me were friends.I was a kid and he was a legend, met him in 79 we were close. Drinking was somthing that we had in commen. He taught me that living this life was just about getting by. He was and is a

cornerstone of Outlaw Country. Before Waylon and Willie,Merle,or anyone else!! J.P. R.I.P LOVE YOU OLD MAN THAHAMMER

  • @ROCKANDROLLDJ79 Before Waylon or Willie? Hardly my friend. Willie and Waylon both were recording and writing in the early 60's. Johnny had hit records too, but Wanted: Outlaws broke open everything. If not for the success of that album none of them may have been heard from again. Hag has been going strong since the late 60's himself.

  • I agree, this is country music. This kind of country does not exist anymore..miss Paycheck!!!!

  • agreed, I love everything from Lefty Frizzell to Joe Diffie but the mid 90s is about where i stop. The new stuff from Mark Chesnutt, Clay Walker, etc... is about all the new stuff I listen to. I lost my faith in Nashville after the neo-traditional/honky tonk guys of the early 90's were COMPLETELY fased out unless they sold out to the more pop oriented stuff (COUGH) kenny chesney, tim mcgraw

  • forget aldean, antebellum, rascal flatts and all that, give me Paycheck, Jones, Whitley,Young,Twitty, Chesnutt, Lawrence, and Singletary

  • @BrennanBarrier hell yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @BrennanBarrier This country today isn't shit. They think they are but not. Amen brother~ This generation of country rules! always has, always will! Down with the bullshit wannebes today.. They cannot and will not ever touch Paycheck, Hank, Haggard, and the classic timeless ones.

  • Great old song. But there isn't anything wrong with Jason Aldean though!!

  • Johnny P är en stor favorit!

  • I LOVE THE JHONNY PAYCHECK!!!!!!!

  • now that is country!

  • John Denver??!!! Do you not remember what Charlie Rich did?

  • Great song, great man. brings back memories of my mum who passed away two years ago. My mum loved this song.

    Thanks

    Arlene

  • This is the best classics of Johnny Paycheck!

  • Awesome song!

  • fuck i wish i could sing!!!

  • Jim Ed Brown and Jerry Clower are hosting. Whats the name of the show???

  • @mikecio1 "nashville on the road"

  • go Johnny!!

  • This is country. Pee on Big & Rich, with a full bladder!!!!

  • You mean Big & Not So Big

  • @chevellejack if that aintt country, i'll kiss ur ass, damn straight!

  • JP did a private show for the atlanta falcons at the furman univ. dining hall around 1973 or4. They let the furman players come to the show. It was awesome, thanks still to Claude Humphries for getting him there.

  • My favorite Paycheck song BY FAR!

  • ok,, the real Johnny ....

  • jammie like johnny is the real deal' but like johnny nashville would rather promote rascal flatts or big and rich with cowboy troy or jason aldean. DON'T IT MAKE YOU SICK.

  • Sure as hell does, I don't think I've ever even heard Rascal Flats, but I assume they're the same as all the other pop stars they call country today

  • Consider yourself lucky, they suck! Bring back real country music! George Jones, Johnny Cash, John Denver, Johnny Paycheck, Faron Young and many others

  • @mdbpowerwash well aldean and eric church and randy houser and jamey johnson are the real country singers of today but no one is better than johnny paycheck!

  • @mdbpowerwash Don't forget tim mcgraw. It's all about the younger media. All about the glam. It's what sell the most. Murder on music row.

  • This is an awesome performance. He was in his prime during this era, and I forgot how good looking he was too. Thanks for posting this gem. Faved and 5'd.

  • What a great video indeed. That day Johnny also played "I Did the Right Thing". What I'd give to see it again!

    Anyway, GREAT video. 10000 stars!

  • The other guy is the great Jim Ed Brown.

  • GREAT STUFF....... Johnny only as he could do it. Jerry Clower... does anyone know who the other dude is? Mel??

  • I was trying to watch American (ugh.) Idol and witnessed MURDER...

Some gay guy was killing ...(in a very ugly way ) Johnny Cash's, "RING OF FIRE"....I had to leave the room before throwing up.

This show should be sued in court.

  • What a great voice !! The talent he had was off the charts. I think our younger generation of country fans should listen to him. I know he had personal problems that may have overshadowed his art , but the talent , ability, and voice made him a legend.

  • paycheck was a great and still is, thank you youtubers for posting and remember the old honkey tonkers. my new guy is jamey johnson, he's good, he's real good, take it from someone who knows dfown here in south kacka lacki.

  • Greenfield, Ohio's native son; God rest his soul!

  • Paycheck never had the marketing of Waylon or

Willie, but really just as good in most ways.

Willie and Merle wrote all those great songs but

Paycheck could put over honky tonk as good as anyone.

  • paycheck is one of my favorite singers I grew up on him.and ya i know what yer saying lol The guy playing the steel guitar looks like super mario bros.but hey its the 70s

  • Paycheck is the man, RIP johnny..........

But WTF is that guy wearing at 1:26 LOL

  • Yeah, that is a pretty interesting outfit the steel players wearing.

  • that is country RIP johnny

  • RIP Johnny Paycheck & Jerry Clower

  • a huge Amen to nccountryboy90.

Would love to add... I love JP, and this is a favoirte! (I love them all)

  • damn right JP

  • Love Johnny paycheck. Rip

Didn't the electric harp guy play with K.C. & the Sunshine band ?

  • This is really good!

  • Paycheck still comes to this one horse town to a biker bar on the river:)

  • I meant David Allen Coe :) LOL !

  • OMG another classic. This was when music was real music.

  • what year is this?

  • JERRY CLOWER son, you better recognize

  • He didn't kill the man. He shot him in the forehead.

  • how can you not love this song or any of his songs. he managed to get 11 hits to the top ten. i think thats an accomplishment. yet ive heard from several people that he was a one hit wonder. honestly he had songs better than shove it. i lkie me and the irs and im the only hell my mama ever raised. those are my favorites.

  • johnny paycheck has made some mistakes. but havent we all. he deserves more recognition than what hes gotton. he should be inducted in the country music hall of fame.

  • amen!!! he really did make some good music. but you still have old hypocrits in nashville tn! time 4 them to reconnize the true country instead of this hip-hop country crap

  • Paycheck tells it like it is..

  • Well, Lord knows, he put the rot in rot gut country. Man is he cool.

  • paycheck did time for killing a man

  • I'm no typical country fan,but I can't help loving Johnny Paycheck and his work.

  • Yep.That's him.

  • is that Jerry Clower at the first of the video

  • the man did some time. yrs ago when he came to missouri to do a concert he was picked up on a outstanding warrant. always did wonder why the man crossed the state line. heard georges jones pd to burry the man. music is good. guess we overlook the lifes of the people's. flesh and blood. the man crossed the line on the "out law movement".

  • i wish country was still like this...im 21 but appreciate the good ol stuff.

  • anyone post" I did the right thing"or tell me where this is from?

  • I'm lookin' for it too - please let me know if you find it.

  • he recorded i did the right thing about this error' it's on the same albun as satin sheets

  • anyone heard of a rare rare rrare deut with him and george called "outlaws last ride"? something along those lines been looking for it for years

  • yeah, what happend to country music?? Where are the paychecks today? Insufficient funds is where. JP for all times...

  • Smiley Roberts

  • Who is playin steel?

  • Damn i love this music....these clowns now a days are just posers.

  • Is that Buddy Emmons playin steel?

  • NOPE

  • can't get a good look but maybe jim murphy
