It's typical John Mayer, pop lyrics, with average blues riffs behind the words. And as for the SRV comparison, yes they both play Fender Stratocaster's, but SRV's sound is raw and gripping, Mayer's is not. Mayer's is just that typical Strat sound that everyone has. . First he needs to get some of the right lyrics, or cover the right songs and then he needs to find that raw sound that he should have if he's going to try and imitate SRV's playing style (Mayer's sound is just not raw).

Srv was not a "blues rock player" he was one of the last of a very long line of true blues musicians. meaning he did not classify himself as a blues guitarist, but a musician who chose to play blues. Mayer is a juke box who does horrible renditions of once sacriligous blues standards while regurgitating the most basic of blues licks. Mayer is a pop senstaion who leanrt the pentatonic scale and basic I-IV-V blues progression. fuck you J.M
This is a somewhat decent starting point for John Mayer to step out of that horrid acoustic pop balladeer image. I personally was never a fan, but like I said, after reading that review, I had to hear for myself. I am not saying I'm a blues expert, but it has always been my favorite genre of music by far. The SRV influence in Mayer's playing is obvious, but with the exception of a couple of covers, this is not a good blues album
John Mayer is a great guitarplayer who as many many guitarists i.e. SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, Jeff Beck a.o. have based his playing on the blues style. Through his choice of the trio format and his dedication to blues classics, brings this style to a wider pop audience. If people like it, which it seems, they will look back and find joy in old Muddy Waters albums as any blues lover has done.

I don't have the energy for this. Please, go to your library and get out a few Howlin' Wolf or Charles Brown or any of the countless real blues artists albums. His new album isn't blues or anything close. It's pop, plain and simple. And being an SRV hack doesn't make you any more of a blues artist. I definitely would agree that his new album isn't pure blues but it certainly has blues influences and a couple of the songs are very bluesy. He's admitted on interviews that in order for him to make a blues "revival" it's ironic that first he had to become a pop singer. He can't completely ditch his old stuff and do pure blues or he'd lose his fanbase. Personally I disliked the old stuff but find his new stuff really good.
For everyone saying he's no SRV, Guy, etc., we know. No one wants a poor imitation of old blues legends. What's great about those guys is the unique style each one brought to the blues genre. John Mayer is infusing his own, new style to the blues. Music needs to evolve or it gets boring. Any great musician will say the same thing.

okay..all of you who think JH has 'the blues' need to watch a movie called 'Leadbelly' from 1976. It's about Huddie Ledbetter, and the movie shows you pretty accurately just how one really gets 'the blues' Clapton scores because he was a junkie and kicked it. I just don't see or hear any great conflict in JH. He's just like a really really good parrot. But it's good that you enjoy his music. Now.. I dare you..maybe learn something about where it comes from and who he is imitating. Seriously.

He's just imitating a style created by men who created the blues because they lived them. Read JH's bio. He's a papmpered kid from Bridgeport Conn. Probably the roughest he ever had it was raking the leaves in his parent's yard, or having to figure out what to wear to the prom. Real inspiration for the blues, honestly. Read about Leadbelly..that's how you get the blues: railroaded to prison, breaking rocks with a sledghammer. That'll give you the blues. Working in the fields 14 hours a day.

Money means nothing to the emotion you experience. just because someone had enough money to go out to eat every night doesn't mean that they can't have their heart broken. many people with money still have issues. so you can't take away someone's right to play the blues because he had a little money when he grew up

Yes, I agree, you are right. My thing with JH is that I just don't hear it. I actually fear a little for him; and I hope he's too dumb to learn the difference. I think he has a lot of people who are making $ off him and telling him he's great, and he might believe it. I just hope he doesn't realize one day that he's just a Saturday morning cartoon character 'blues player'. I doubt JH could survive what happened to Clapton, it's somewhat alike. Broken lives are tougher than broken hearts.

JM's greatest talent is seen in his willful participation of self promotion. Watch Reggie Wooten and Victor Wooten play and then tell me how talented JM is as a musician. It's typical John Mayer, pop lyrics, with average blues riffs behind the words. And as for the SRV comparison, yes they both play Fender Stratocaster's, but SRV's sound is raw and gripping, Mayer's is not. Mayer's is just that typical Strat sound that everyone has. . First he needs to get some of the right lyrics, or cover the right songs and then he needs to find that raw sound that he should have if he's going to try and imitate SRV's playing style (Mayer's sound is just not raw).

Srv was not a "blues rock player" he was one of the last of a very long line of true blues musicians. meaning he did not classify himself as a blues guitarist, but a musician who chose to play blues. Mayer is a juke box who does horrible renditions of once sacriligous blues standards while regurgitating the most basic of blues licks. Mayer is a pop senstaion who leanrt the pentatonic scale and basic I-IV-V blues progression. fuck you J.M

This is a somewhat decent starting point for John Mayer to step out of that horrid acoustic pop balladeer image. I personally was never a fan, but like I said, after reading that review, I had to hear for myself. I am not saying I'm a blues expert, but it has always been my favorite genre of music by far. The SRV influence in Mayer's playing is obvious, but with the exception of a couple of covers, this is not a good blues album

John Mayer is a great guitarplayer who as many many guitarists i.e. SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, Jeff Beck a.o. have based his playing on the blues style. Through his choice of the trio format and his dedication to blues classics, brings this style to a wider pop audience. If people like it, which it seems, they will look back and find joy in old Muddy Waters albums as any blues lover has done.

I definitely would agree that his new album isn't pure blues but it certainly has blues influences and a couple of the songs are very bluesy. He's admitted on interviews that in order for him to make a blues "revival" it's ironic that first he had to become a pop singer. He can't completely ditch his old stuff and do pure blues or he'd lose his fanbase. Personally I disliked the old stuff but find his new stuff really good.

John Mayer is infusing his own, new style to the blues. Music needs to evolve or it gets boring. Any great musician will say the same thing.

First off, JM picked up the guitar because his influences were blues legends, and before he became a famous pop singer, he was performing the blues at small venues. Also, how can you say that the more famous you get, the worse your blues material is? You're wrong about two things: that famous people have perfect lives and that the blues is about complaining. You don't have to have complaints to write/sing the blues. The blues is about expressing yourself. That's why it's such a great genre.

The reason John mayer made poppy songs was to get famous, if you look you can see that all of his songs off of the album heavier things, use blues chords. This was a smart idea because now he is very popular and he could release his true passion, blues. So don't bring him down because of his poppy reputation.
