@loltitapota the background's laugh is to make you think that there are people near to you and see this. many series have that, like fawlty towers have that efect.
I will always envy the british for this masterpiece of art. Blackadder is the foremost display of historical `accuratesse´ in humoristic craftmanship on tv.
I agree with NonesensicalHandle. However, I can't blame a lot of people here in th U.S. for not knowing. I was raised in a house that watched a lot of public television and I grew up watching Hugh, especially in "Jeeves and Wooster". It's nice that he is getting to be known over here, but I'm always trying to remind people of his earlier work. He's a great actor all around.
Yes it is. Hugh Laurie was a very famous actor in Britain for a long time before he started work on that series. Blackadder is considered one of the finest works of British comedy, and he's been in it since the beginning... Usually playing an idiot, I'll give, but he's still been in there.

"Well, possibly." The pure resignation in Blackadder's voice makes me love those two words.

It's a weird question to ask but... did anyone ask themselves why exactly did a good part of television series had laughs in the background?

I always want to cry a little when people don't know about Hugh Laurie in Blackadder, Jeeves & Wooster, OR A Bit of Fry & Laurie.
Sigh.
