I think this performance proves very much that Whitney can not really dance, and apart from the fact that she has lost most of her register these days, I think this performance shows that she has never been a terrific singer. She is completely out of breath after one minute of semi-dancing.
She doesn't do that insanely high note at 2:14. Mariah is ridiculously meticulous in that regard. She may not have as much power as Houston, but when she sings live, she does every riff, every run and every note of the studio recording. I just came over from a performance of Open Arms and was stunned. Love both.
I remember this episode. After this performance, Arsenio himself said that he appreciated her singing live depsite that she had a cold because she could have lipsynched like others have done on his show. This was around the time that Blackbox, CC Music were busted for using Martha Wash's vocals and placing skinny women in front to lipsynch to her. I actually liked her voice more around this era. Even though around the "I'm your baby tonight" era it was the beginning to where her voice cracked more. Partly due to the fact that this was one of the most extensive tours shes done to date! nearly 70 dates in the US alone, not to mention over seas. Another reason her voice cracked more was because it was changing and not for the worse but it was actually becoming powerful. She was reaching her prime. shes trying to adapt to the change.

HISTORY LESSON PEOPLE: Whitney was hoarse that night. It was thought that she was not going to sing. Arsenio pointed out in the show that her voice was hoarse, but she still wanted to perform. Unlike today when she uses that excuse, you could believe it then.
First of all, this wasn't a bad performance, it was actually really good. Vocally it wasn't her best (by Whitney standards), but it was still miles better than most of these non-singers could pull off today. Plus she also danced and didn't lipsynch! A professional is someone who decides that a cold isn't going to stop them from performing (which Whitney did), so for you to be criticizing her for actually performing the song is pretty weak! Even sick she can still sing better than you!

To address kain21 W.H. is not blown out of proportion..As someone else said she was of course hoarse prob due to touring..She was and is an exceptional vocalist..Talk what you know man...look at most of her live performances and she is on point..Its ok if you don't like W.H. but she was NEVER blown out of proportion...You're being a hater and thats not cool..Have a nice.

Not saying her voice wasnt powerful before this. If u listen it was actually more higher in the 80's. Around this time it got a little bit more range...power...and a tad bit deeper. She was becoming a lady. Thats why I jus loved her more around 91 92 era

I actually liked her voice more around this era. Even though around the "I'm your baby tonight" era it was the beginning to where her voice cracked more. Partly due to the fact that this was one of the most extensive tours shes done to date! nearly 70 dates in the US alone, not to mention over seas. Another reason her voice cracked more was because it was changing and not for the worse but it was actually becoming powerful. She was reaching her prime. shes trying to adapt to the change.

The dancing is terrible and her voice isn't anything to fuss about. As usual, another celebrity is totally blown out of proportion. Oops....I'd better be careful in what I'm saying; some mad Whitney fan (because, like Mariah, Celine and Christina fans, most Whitney fans are fanatical) might attempt to assasinate me!

HISTORY LESSON PEOPLE: Whitney was hoarse that night. It was thought that she was not going to sing. Arsenio pointed out in the show that her voice was hoarse, but she still wanted to perform. Unlike today when she uses that excuse, you could believe it then.

First of all, this wasn't a bad performance, it was actually really good. Vocally it wasn't her best (by Whitney standards), but it was still miles better than most of these non-singers could pull off today. Plus she also danced and didn't lipsynch! A professional is someone who decides that a cold isn't going to stop them from performing (which Whitney did), so for you to be criticizing her for actually performing the song is pretty weak! Even sick she can still sing better than you!

Great performance!! This is one of the few artists who doesn't lipsync! The clip had it all!! Even the 'running man'. Had the opportunity to see her in concert and this lady is the Original Diva of our time!

Regardless of how bad her dancing is, she is singing LIVE, dancing the best way she can, and SHE STILL SOUNDS GOOD! Compared to a lot of these artists today that overdance and lip-synch.

Whitney is amazing but she never was much of a dancer. Back then you were taught to dance if you couldn't. Nowadays all you need is a cute face and be able to dance to get a record deal. You don't have to be able to sing.
