The 10mm has nothing to do with the 9mm actually. The 10mm Auto or 10x25mm cartridge was developed to be a median between the 9mm (velocity) and the .45ACP (impact) later the 10mm was shortened down and is now known as the .40S&W or .10x22mm slightly less recoil than a 10mm. You can still find and buy 10mm weapons especially in 1911 design however ammunition for them is quite a bit more expensive than the more common .40S&W (nick named the "short a and week" by many fans of the 10mm).
