This version is very beautiful. My voice teacher took lessons from Tebaldi, so I'm a little partial to her voice and technique. But this does well for listening study....

The difference between the 1982 in Verona, the 83 in ROH and this 1992 is like heaven and earth. In the 82 she vocalizes beautifully, but there is a detachment that makes it not work dramatically. The 83 ROH is a little hysterical, and the Italian not very idiomatic. This clip is the culmination of it all: It has the immediacy of the text, the beauty of the singing and the calmness of certain, but welcomed death.

I could not live without this clip, and i am not a Kiri fan.

I have seen many different productions with Dame Kiri as Desdemona and she has turned the role better every time! Fleming sings it lovely with emotion, but just too much manipulation. Kiri....thats why we call her Dame.

She makes a great Desdemona, it goes without saying. However, I can't help it, I like Renée Fleming's Desdemona better... I guess it's simply because of the.. colour in their voices. Kiri's astonishing, though.

agree to disagree there. Fleming has to color in her voice to make Desdemona more "human" just like Dame Kiri and her Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni but...This production with Domingo....totally right. His "Helden" tenor to her smooth, flowing lyric. Simply amazing!

I agree that both sopranoes have beautiful instruments - my money is with Kiri, though, since she sings the aria 'straight', ie. she doesn't embellish the written music at all; Fleming, sadly, re-writes the music and swoops around so that no two bars have the same meter, which is unforgivable.
