@robbie211 The reason they have it in a contest format is simply to draw a larger crowd and therefore spread the word to a larger audience. I'm pretty sure if it was hurting the image Daniel Ilabaca and Ryan Doyle wouldn't be there

@Isosyth i just think its a bit of a cop out to change the meaning of somthing purely for publicity. I mean parkour itself doesnt need a bigger audience does it? i prefer the way you sometimes see parkour in movies etc and people think "wow that looks cool", rather than turn it into a competition going against the very nature of it. Once again MTV is exploiting something from the underground for profit.

@robbie211 They didn't change the meaning of it, they state clearly in the show that it isn't something you can just go out and do, that it takes time to build up the skills as well as the good that it's done. It pretty much saved Ilabaca, Turner and Arroyo's lives.

@Isosyth yeah but thanks to mtv the point isn't really stressed enough to make much of an impact. people are just seeing parkour as running round doing flips. the large crowd that something like this may draw to parkour is going to be completley ignorant to any of parkour's core philosophies. To me that's more of a setback.

@robbie211 True, trust me I can see where your coming from and I am in no way a fan of MTV. The thing is, people that watch this show see the professionals demonstrate it and talk about why they do it and how it helped them. Someone could watch a couple videos on youtube and think "oh hey, this looks fun" and then go out and try it as well. Really it comes down to the person learning to find a way to discover the meaning.

@Isosyth fair enough, it usually will come down to the individual in question. But even still MTV really isn't helping with the way they are portraying this. I'd be a bit less angry if they had at least mentioned that parkour had a history to be learnt, even if they themselves didnt go into detail

@robbie211 that's your opinion they shouldn't they didn't distort it they infact have put up little history lessons before episodes about parkour.just last night they explained what it is and what it is about and then went on to say this competion is out of fun.

Honestly, what is gonna be kept on the streets now If MTV keeps exploiting it? I believe when it's on the streets, it's in it's utmost purest form. when it's brought in the mainstream, it has to be ego-driven, competitive and made lucrative. Instead of what it should be, progressive, creative and an avenue of self expression.

@baonero Accept it. It's happening. There is nothing you can do to stop it. Parkour and FreeRunning are exploding in popularity everywhere around the world. You should be happy. This will bring many new comers to the sport/discipline. The only problem is that they will try the big roof gaps and junk and get hurt. Overall I think that this is going to help the Parkour/Free Running community as long as we educate people properly about the disciplines
