I like Van Morrison's much more powerful version of this song. Art looks like Jesus methinks is partly from the religion Jesus was from originally. I don't know his earlier voice or version of this song but his voice is not so good now though there are remnants of a once bolder voice...just can't quite get there it seems but almost. I mean it's good just nothing spectacular now. How about a drummer? The two guitars themselves seem tame. A 12-string on a 4-track would be better.
@11xzxzxz well you're catching the man 30+ years later after the original, with an insipid guitar version and not a very good mix either frankly lol. Try this version it will knock your socks off and is IMHO THE definitive version of the song. The Organ is just perfect to give it that Phantom of the Opera type pathos and a slight touch of malevolence. v=k7MgohiD5Fk&feature=related
@BloxorzWizard Well I will listen but I think his voice is still fine now.. I change my mind .. I just think the band needs to be bolder louder for a song like this. I should have just focused on that. Take care.
It takes something to make this song your own, when you're up against Nina Simone and Screaming Jay Hawkins but he does and without Vincent Crane and Carl Palmer.
The acoustic guitar/kitchen arrangement really works.
Arthur, you have an amazing voice and an amazing history - even for me (30 years old) who wasn't around back in the days. I wish I would get a chance to work with you some day, despite the fact that I am into a completely different genre (electronic dance music). Keep up the great work, and please post more acoustic clips like this if you have, I love it!
He has one hell of a voice. It's strange that he didn't make as much of a visible impact on the music scene as some of his contemporarys who he was equally talented as. I saw him doing his bit on the Who's movie Tommy, singing during "Eyesight to the blind" and I thought he sounded like a better version of Paul Rogers!
I still have my Crazy World album................................................The album has , to me, an incredible version of Spell on You, but this live recording, although his voice is still great belies this. Superb, we miss you
Hate to admit it but I never heard of him.....I like it!! Did you all know that EARLY in Bruce Dickinson's career he was compared to this guy! Thats why I looked him up...
@bent540 Listen, asshole, Arthur cut this song like 35 years ago and did it better than anybody ever did. Yeah, he's lost a little over those years but he set the fucking standard and he still deserves respect ...go listen to the 1960's version he did and you MIGHT appreciate him a little more...but i doubt it, ya fucktwit Philistine. And WTF ARE you doing here? FUCK OFF. I bet you think Bob Dylan sings shitty too. You just don't get it because yer an unsophisticated jerk .
"strange" that someone 5 below would think this is a cover musician? one of the first albums I ever bought is by this "cover" musician, it's still in the old collection.
Not "strange" at all. He sez the song's a cover not the artist... and it is. Screamin' Jay Hawkins wrote it. BTW, there's also a James Brown cover on your old collection.
shit ..old arthur looks pretty damn good 30 yrs after i saw him on fire in LA the night i saw him with fleetwood mac..and a little group called the Who...in 1968.
I thought a kitchen witch was somebody who makes meth. Ohhh, was that how his head caught on fire? Just playin'. Seriously, I wish my vocals had half his range and half his strength!
His voice is still good since the time I first heard him in 1968. Good show, Arthur, you can sing probably because you don't smoke and from your looks, you are taking care of yourself.
Amen to that. Brown was/is out there with an incredible range the 1st crazy world of.. is a classic not only psychedelic but blues & as for the keyboard.. DAMN !The Zombies & Brian Auger did some magic but Arthur was/is a wizard. As for the LSD it helps but never distracted from his genius.
Thanks for posting this - puts me back in touch with my own inner turmoil years ago, when I befriended this guy and his loony mum.
He and I were contemplating on perhaps getting something together musically, but then he suffered a brain haemorrhage on stage in Southend-On-Sea in June 1994 during his 'come-back tour'in England.(I sat by his bedside as we talked) Took him months to get well again. Then he returned to Austin, Texas and treated me like trash. End of. Still like his music though ...
A. Brown does have a great voice. Very well in tune. For reference A. Brown doesn't mean Ayla Brown form American IDOL .Singers I love are old school also like Greg Lake , Todd Rundgren , and Ian Gillian just to name a few. Nice acoustic set done with intensity .
hm....perhaps a bit too much nostalgia going on, imo. The guy has an ok voice(much better than mine, anyway;hehe) but no near equal to the praise being leaped upon him here. Fogerty as well as Cocker each put forth much better renditions....not knocking the guy but don't understand where all the praise is coming from other than from old hippies waxing lsd memories ;)
Arthur Brown is one of the best vocalists ever no matter what instraments hes singing with. one of the best ever...? show me one person with a voice as good or better then his.
I completely agree with you, although I could show you people with voices as least as good as Arthur Brown's: Ronnie James Dio, Peter Hammill...to name two.
Arthur of course had a cameo role in the rock opera Tommy and he is in the newly released movie Freebird. He plays a dope growing New Age freaky type :) This new British movie is destined to be come a cult classic.
Arthur Brown is a true legend! This clip shows he's not only made the distance, but his voice is still crisp and sharp . . . and able to deal with this acoustic environment. This track, Nightmare and Fire are among my all-tim faves - and at 53, I still play 'em regularly.
