It'll be great having her back alongside Tom Baker in the upcoming Big Finish plays. Now that the shackles that bound her character ie poor and lazy writing, bad attitude from Tom Baker (Baker and Louise are friends now) we should really see what she can do if the Gallifrey series, her Jago and Litefoot and companion chronicles appearances are anything to go by.
Best Leela tribute I've seen, well done indeed! And the quote at the end is her best ever, from her most shining moment, 'The Sun Makers'. God bless Leela! :~D
I like her character a lot, but i can't understand why the doctor was so mean to her some times. This is just my opinion, but i really think they should have done what they did with Ace's character with Leela.
One of the best things about Who is the variety of locales where its stories are set. In the first six stories there's a really interesting array of well-designed environments that contrast well with one another: shame that they become bog-standard drab SF locations in the last three.
i like this song and leela was excellent nice change i hated how she left she sould have died in battle or in the doctors arms a true warriros death not marrying some guy she barely knows
I know, that was a lame denoument to Leela's saga. Perhaps if she'd stayed two stories longer she coulda got together with Bruce Purchase's Pirate Captain? ;)
really wish that they could bring Leela back, or a child thereof. They brought Sarah Jane back after all. Having a somewhat bloodthirsty warrior type would make for a better contrast against the Doctor's own attitude.
(pictures the Lucy Lawless version of Leela.) OK. THAT could work. Besides, who *wouldn't* want to see Davros or some similar baddie getting some suitable stabbity action?
@Metroanime Well we got the next best thing, starting next year she and Tom Baker will reprise their roles in a series of Big Finish Doctor Who productions.
I can't believe they got rid of her by marrying her off to Andred; where did that even come from, seeing as they were barely in contact with each other for the duration of 'The Invasion of Time'!
I see to remember Louise Jameson once remarking that her character would have had a more memorable final story if she'd sacrificed herself to save the Doctor or something similar, and I think she was right (even if it would have been very sad).
@glnelson1956 Indeed Baker was something of a bully towards young Louise at the time. Eventually she stood up to him and he backed off a bit but they never quite got on by all accounts. Recently though they've become friends he even apologised to her for his behaviour back then and now that they've reprised they're roles for some Big Finish productions we'll no doubt see what Leela should have could have and still can be.
@Hecatean Also there was some fairly poor and lazy writing to blame as well. To be fair though they did have a great season lined up with some (appearantly) cracking scripts with a vampire theme, but then the BBC got all precious about their production of Dracula that year and pulled the rug from under their feet at the last minute leaving the writing team with little choice but to route around in the dustbin for scripts which quite rightly got thrown out and clean them up as best they could,.
@Hecatean It seems that Tom's attitude went downhill immediately after Lis Sladen left. I feel that Tom is "at the edge" stability-wise emotionally and mentally. Not unusual for those in the acting profession. I base my view on Tom's writings, interviews and DVD commentaries. He is very strange and off-the-wall at times.
Lis was remarkably stable, with a normal family life. Tom trusted her and her stability "anchored" him. It is VERY noticeable to me in their DVD commentaries together.
What a magnificent character Leela is. Trouble was she was only written properly by Boucher and Holmes. Everybody else wrote her as thick(including Terrance Dicks in his novelisations) which she most certainly was NOT. If everbody else had written her properly together with Jameson's superb performance this characters potential could have been tapped a LOT better.
Aye, Agree with you both there. Leela has now had the most powerful and engaging post Doctor histories of any companion maybe Bernice. Great character finally being treated properly mind you I'll be contentious and say Tom Baker's primadonna attitude during Jameson's time probably didn't help.
Speaking of great companions I think one of these days I'll have to get my backside trained so I can be this good at editing footage ect and do one for Ian and Barbara the originals and IMHO still the best!
would have loved to see Leela's son or daughter in the new series, sort of passing the torch on. Being half Gallifreyan, that would still leave the Doctor as the last Time Lord. (Haven't seen beyond Lazarus Experiment yet.)

Now... if Leela doesn't prove that girls arn't just the stupid screaming sissies that they are usually broadcast as then i don't know what will.

Brown eyes Leela kicked butt and was jaw droppingly beautiful. When here eye color and costume changed, it was a sad, sad day.

In the middle and latter stages of Baker's DrWho run, his attitude slowly and gradually, slid downhill.
The Leela character had great potential, but never allowed to grow, became a cartoon character for much of her time in the series.
Most of the limitations Leela faced as a character were probably due to Tom Baker's progressively worsening attitude at that time.
Louise Jameson deserves a lot of credit for making the best of her situation through the 9episodes Leela was in!
