  • We had more talent in Iaa than now!

  • @MrTurkeybeard3 No doubt! Vinny Curry and Aaron Dobson would start on the 96 team (obviously), but our talent was so deep, the BACKUPS on this team (John Grace, Rogers Beckett, Doug Chapman, Jason Starkey etc) went 13-0 in 1-A in 1999 when their chance come up. Even Chad Pennington and Paul Toviessi, two future first-day NFL draft picks redshirted that year. And that doesn't even include Moss. Also, Chris Hanson, the punter, played 11 years in the NFL averaging 42 yards per boot.

  • i need pair of those socks

  • 2:23 get off me bitch!

  • moss the boss

  • wow randy used to block and play? Man I wish he was still like this.

  • @ChevyManSS350 watch games. He has been blocking great, sadly he asked for that trade from New England. Terrible, terrible mistake.

  • back when moss was not all about him self

  • @possessedllama33 Ya know, Moss may have very well taken plays off at Marshall, but he was so much more talented than the corners and safeties he played against in college. I think the only two NFL DBs Moss faced in college were Blaine McElmurry of Montana and Clarence Love from Toledo . . . . . yeah exactly! But Moss also actually had something to prove at Marshall. He had been kicked out of FSU and Notre Dame, and Marshall gave him a chance. In return, he helped put MU on the map!

  • The PiKes called the '96 team the 304 Mafia so this song is fitting for the video....lol

  • lol the mascot fell at 3:09

  • @skylar009 I knew the mascot from back then and saw that game, he did it deliberate and what the video didnt show was Marco pretending to blow on on his finger nails then rub them on his jersey

  • its almost a crime to think the MONTANA GRIZZLIES had to play against randy moss in the national championship...now look at moss, one of the greatest in the NFL...damn...But this year marshall and montana played in the chipper, im a proud griz though!

  • @westbear78 Montana was a great 1-AA team. To think if they had come along almost any other year they would've been 15-0, and people would've asked "which 15-0 team was better?" Fortunately for all, they were perfect the same year. Two undefeated teams in the title game has never happened before and will likely never happen again (esp with expansion). I feel for you, westbear. That happened to you TWICE now. As a herd fan, I rooted for Vill because I want no one to question Marshall was the best

  • @dylanrocks83 oh no doubt! and i went to UM :) proud alum. but anyways, i can just be proud like you said they made it.. And im dissapointed you rooted for nova :( but i guess i can see your logic. but just like marshall fans bleed green and white, i bleed maroon and silver! hopefully we can see this griz team back in the chipper this coming season (highly doubtful) but soon enough i hope they can get back and actually win!

  • @westbear78 Yeah don't take that as any disrespect toward Montana. Had they beat Nova I wouldn't have shed one tear. You guys were respectful in defeat and victory (as I know you remember, the Griz beat Chad Pennington and Olandis Gary's Marshall team the year before in our house.) I wish we still played you guys, though we all know Montana would have won the last few years (New Hampshire beat us, Southern Ill came close). Montana will be back in it. I hope MU can keep winning bowls. :)

  • As a lifelong Marshall fan, I just wanna say I respect the hell out of the Griz...they brought great crowds for those two title games from 2000 miles away. I still root for them in the playoffs...hopefully they'll join the WAC or MWC someday or keep doing their thing in FCS. Good luck Montana!

  • @PicketOnlineVideo hey man, thats what i call respectability. not doggin on a team no one really knows. I can respect that! i also hope we move up, we just gotta make sure we can afford to, and can compete in a few years.

  • whose #86?

  • Billy Lyon. He was undrafted into the NFL, but played 8 years (starting three of those) for the Chiefs, Packers, and Vikings.

  • I always said, imagine if Moss stayed his remaining 2 years and would have been on the 1999 Marshall team.

  • Marshall went 12-1 in 1998 (when Moss was tearing it up as a rookie for the Vikes). If he would've been on MU's team, they certainly would've beaten Bowling Green. And if he stayed for his senior season in 1999, they would have a 25-game winning streak heading into the bowls that year, which means they probably would've been the first mid-major to play in a BCS game (instead of Utah in 2004). Just imagine . . .

  • marshall is the best team ever go herd and if you like football marshall or skating come to jaybird5372 go to that account and rate the videos and comment

  • was marshall d1 or d1aa in 96?

  • Marshall was 1-AA. It was their last year in 1-AA, but since they knew of the jump 3 yrs earlier, they could (unfairly some said) promise recruits a chance to play in 1-A as juniors and seniors. That plus the fact that a local superstar (Moss) got kicked out of Notre Dame and FSU and had to come home, made Marshall unbeatable at that level. Now they have the "Marshall Law" in 1-AA where teams cannot participate in the playoffs two years prior to making the jump because of recruiting advantages

  • was nate poole on this team?

  • I just looked at the program from the 1996 championship game to be sure, and he is not on the roster. Poole played as a true freshman in 1997, and wore jersey number 89. As a sophomore he switched to number 3 and saw a significant increase in reps after Randy Moss went pro following the '97 season. In 99 with Pennington, he was the number two option behind James Williams (who played a few yrs for the Seahawks). In 2000, as a senior, he was sophomore Byron Leftwich's go-to guy.

  • thanks man

  • and after he left u know who came in...Darius Watts! man, him and byron where awesome together. sometimes i still wish we were still in the MAC. i use to always look forward to the games against Toledo and Miami.

  • . . . and remember, this was before the entire playoffs were on national tv. The only 1-AA game on national tv in 1996 was the championship. It was a lot harder to recruit to 1-AA 10-15 years ago than it is now.

  • @dylanrocks83 that is very true...1-AA can practically be called 1-A now, and div. II can be called the I-AA...really if you think about it...1-AA now is sort of like NFL europe...that doesn't exist anymore lol. but you get what i mean, can 1-AA teams play with 1-A teams? sometimes, but more often than not, no. Simply cause they are just smaller, doesn't mean the talent isn't there though!

  • The '96 team could have beaten anybody in the country that year. Go Herd.

  • any d1aa team, but not any d1 team.

  • You're f*cking retarded. LOL!!!

  • Well one year later, in 1-A, Marshall went 10-3 with a much younger team. They lost 34-31 to an 8-4 Ole Miss in the Motor City Bowl. MU also led West Virginia 31-28 going into the fourth quarter that year. So they could compete with most, but their defense wasn't fast enough for the top tier teams. Plus their lines were small. But no college team could stop Moss. Teams that beat Marshall in 1-A simply outscored them. So it isn't too far fetched, but highly unlikely that MU would beat "anybody"

  • lemonpoundcake i have seen you all over the marshall video and message boards. talking your trash and degrading the herd. and all you are doing is showing the world your true ignorance with these childish antics. so grow up and stop being a moron ok bud. because some of us mature diehard wvu fans have respect marshall, and remember when the herd was a football powerhouse that brought respect to the state. and the herd will rise again someday and we might get caught in their wake. PEACE!

  • who is # 3 and #22

  • Erik Thomas and Doug Chapman respectively. Thomas played one year for the Arizona Cardinals and Chapman was a second or third round pick of the Vikings, He played for them a few years then went to San Diego. Now he calls games for the Ohio U. Bobcats.

  • Here are the players on that team who were eventually drafted, the round, and the team that selected them. 1997 Draft Billy Lyon--undrafted but had an 8 yr career--Chiefs, Packers, Vikings 1998 Draft Randy Moss--1--Vikings John Wade--5--Jaguars 2000 Draft Chad Pennington--1--Jets Rogers Beckett--2--Chargers Chapman--3--Vikings 2001 Draft Paul Toviessi-2-Broncos!
  • Sweet blocks, some of these guys make

  • MOSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • 86 is fucking crazy

  • @NATIVEkingMS13 Bill Lyon all the way

  • yes, VERY loosely based on a true story. First off, Red Dawson wanted the job but they didn't want him to have it. Second, Lingell was the FIRST person offered the job, not the 7th. Third, the main character/narrator was completely fictionalized, and McConnahey did a horrible job portraying the real Lingell. If you want to know how it really happened and hear from the REAL people involved, watch the documentary 'Ashes to Glory.' It is MUCH better than the movie.

  • Marshall is a movie called "We Are Marshall" and it's very very sad the Marshall team has been through a lot, I suggest u see the movie, then u will understand the meaning of the Marshall team!

--It's based on a true story--

  • what song is this.

  • Dangerous Posse-- by: Three 6 Mafia

  • I think 1996 team would have went 12-2 with last years schedule. I believe 1996 is the best MU squad ever...better than the 1999squad. I would nearly guarantee the 1996 team would have went undefeated with the 1999teams schedule. Of course I could be completely wrong :P

  • I think the 96 team was better mostly because of Randy Moss. And most of the stars on the 99 team were backups in 96 (Rogers Beckett, Doug Chapman, Jason Starkey). Even Pennington redshirted. In other words, the 96 team was deep. The backups on the 99 team, especially on defense, couldn't cut it when it was their turn (the defense ranked near the bottom of 1-A in 2000-2001). Obviously Leftwich and some receivers are exceptions. But the 96 team was better top to bottom. So I agree with you.

  • '96 was mostly good because of Moss, really. What about Eric Kresser, the same QB who almost beat out Danny Wuerful at Florida for the starting job in '96 and went with Pruett to Marshall. And that defense was too dominant in '96. The 1996 team was 15-0, had no game closer than a two touchdown win and was ranked No. 1 all-season. It is considered by many as the greatest I-AA team of all time.

  • You are right about everything except they weren't ranked #1 all season. You forget that defending national champion Montana was also undefeated and riding a two year, 21-game win streak heading into the championship against fellow 14-0 Marshall. Montana was the #1 seed going into the playoffs. That's why Marshall wore white jerseys in the championship. They were TECHNICALLY the away team.

  • back in their glory days, its too bad that they will never win like this again, always get romped on by wvu and be made fun of in ESPN's bottom 10 list. Should have never went D1

  • they were really good in D1-A for about five years until their luck ran out. Let's face it, getting Pennington, Moss, then Leftwich was sheer luck. And they played CRAPPY teams. Now they play really good teams and all superstars are gone. Even though this '96 team was great, if they played last years schedule, they'd go 12-2 at best. Probably 11-3 or 10-4.

  • I'd say Bob Pruett was a big part of the success also. He is an underrated coach, IMO.

  • are you kidding? marshall belongs in D1 way more than most of the other mid-majors.

  • Hella sick video nice job

  • thanks what happend to him in the pros he looked good in college was he like joey harrington, ryan leaf, ken dorsey kind of qb or what

  • He was an undrafted free agent who went 10-21 passing in his 3 year career with the Bengals as a backup. Keep in mind, this was when the Bengals were one of worst franchises in all of sports. He was a consistent starter for a year or two in NFL Europe for the Berlin Thunder (I have no stats). Kresser was very good, but it had to be disappointing to jump from 1-AA football to the NFL and get WORSE wide receivers. He never really got a chance, either.

  • could anyone tell me whats the name of #15 the quarterback for marshall i just wanna if thats not too much trouble

  • Eric Kresser.

If you watch the whole video I tell you who all the principal names are and their jersey numbers at the end. Watch the whole the thing.

  • yall watch da catch at 02:22. lamo

  • yeah. if you look closely, you can see Moss kick the guy off of him.

  • AWSOME

    what song is this?

  • Three 6 Mafia--Dangerous Posse

  • Nice highlight vid. I was at most of those games.

  • the stripe socks are pretty sweet. who is #86?

  • Billy Lyon

  • he played 6 years in the NFL with the Packers, and Vikings and played D-end and tackle. He also spent two years on the Chiefs practice squad. Not too bad for a 1-AA guy.

  • old 86 on D was tearing it up.

  • Yeah, that was a special team for sure. I look for Moss to have a big year with the Patriots. I am a Dallas Cowboy fan,but love WVU AND Marshall..being born and raised in WV. Still,it will be ugly for Marshall this coming week..whew!

  • awesome vid. Randy Moss was unstoppable.

  • GREAT video... We STILL Play for CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!

  • and I forgot about Andre O'Neal--55--LB---Chiefs, Vikings

  • what song is this?

  • Dangerous Posse by Three 6 Mafia. I know most people do not like gangsta rap, but I thought the transitions from rapper to rapper and voice type to voice type fit well with the highlight video I put together. Besides, when you listen to this song, doesn't this song just make you want to kick somebody's butt?

  • Ma MA Mafia!!!!! i'm a huge triple 6 mafia fan. goodvid.
