There are risks in everything, stay home if you can't take the risk of going fast on a catamaran. We have "tourists" bungie jumping, riding worn out carnival rides, etc. etc. Gelcoat is a sacrificial layer over the real structure of the boat. It has nothing to do with the structural integrity of the boat. I have 8 sailboats, two of them catamarans, cracks in gelcoat it is just normal stuff. I sailed with these guys and would do it again anytime.
We love these guys. We've sailed with them on both boats for the past 9 years. Always had the best time! The Lanai accident was a freak thing. I would recommend going with these guys if you want to sail and have a blast.
In the charter bus. you hurt someone due to stupidity, you go out of business. I don't know why these idiots are still in bus. They broke a poor ladies collar bone in a capsize off of Lanai, and hurt some other people. They have dismasted twice. There is no catamaran that is designed to be sailed at 20 knotts day after day after day. Look at the sails...they are crap. Cracks in the rear beam. These morons don't get it. Tourists don't really care if the boat is going 10 knotts, or 22.
Based on my sailing experience on monohulls and my own trimaran in a wide variety of conditions, the day I was out with them the boat was under control. But I have to say that if I had been out cruising, I would not have been sailing as fast as they were sailing!
Still, the evidence you mentioned can't be denied.

Was that before the mast fell down.
Or was that before the capsize with passenger injuries.
Too fast with customers = reckless.
