More like Boy Next Door. Akito is a guy in the anime and a girl in the manga. Two different things! I wish people would stop getting them mixed up. If you don't believe me, check out Episode 26 when the kimono slips off his shoulders! Akito has no boobs at all. He has a man's chest.

Akito is a guy in the anime ONLY because the 26 episode anime is made up of only the first few episodes which mean that yes, Akito is a guy because in the first few volumes of the manga it is said to us that Akito is a man since, ya know, one of the stories biggest secrets cant be told just in a 26 episode anime.

It is NOT 'two different things', the creators of the anime just didnt want to ruin the manga for those who hadn't read it yet.

Not to mention that the anime was made during a time that Takaya was in the hospital and thus taking a break from her writing, she allowed the anime to go ahead so that the fans wouldnt miss out on their Fruit Basket fix whilst she was in hospital. So the anime couldnt really know what was going on in Takays mind anyway, it was made when Takaya was still in the middle of writting the manga.

Sorry that people have spoiled it for you, but yeah Akito is actually a woman. It says "he" because she used the Japanese "ore" and on occasion "boku" to refer to herself, "ore" being the boastful way- both terms only used if you're male. And with the Japanese "they" instead of he/she it made it easy to disguise in the Japanese that she's a woman. In the english it's translated as "He", which is kind of true, but there's a lot of backstory. Enjoy Furuba!
