What these prestigious colleges forget is once these stories come out and they're revealed to have covered these stories up, the reputation is smeared far worse than if they did tne right thing for their students and for justice. In most instances it could only help
with sexual assault, i think it is better to cover it up until a verdict is reached. in this culture, men are vilified just for being accused. even if the guy is found innocent, the damage to his reputation is done as soon as the accusation is made public.
The Yale daily news did not cover it up, they refused to report on it.
An anonymous person accuses someone of sexual assault and before any actual investigation is done people are already looking over their shoulders at the accused? The job of a newspaper is not to lampoon people in a closed environment where not much is forgotten.
If a case is built of it, fine, report on that. An accusation? No.
Its not a cover up, if the police were aware of these accusations then they were investing it. I cannot imagine being falsy accused of rape, yet alone having these accusations in the public and being judged in the court of public opinion.
As horrible as sexual assult is, I think tyt university tends to forget that some colleges have ridiculous sexual harresment policies were everything from telling a dirty joke to unwanted comments is sexual harresment. Some colleges under the influence of feminists have tried to remove the right of due process of those who are acused. I'd recomend looking at fire.org
@tytuniversity I feel that it is rather a gray area for Journalism. You don't want to smear a person's reputation just based on the notice that there were allegations of sexual assault no matter who the person was.
Rape charges are extremely under reported in my college town and at my college. Why? Because it would mean less students and thus less money. It's really sad..
I can't stand when they let sports stars get away with things. When I was in High School, Kevin Whaley (former Univ. of Minnesota star) beat the crap out of this girl in the cafeteria. Everyone saw it. What did they do? Nothing because they felt he was too valuable as a leading rusher. His bad ways ended up catching up with him in college, but it's a shame that they never punish these guys for the things they do.
"No means Yes" is not even a outrageous saying. Unless you are a virgin, you have had sex with a girl who has said no then said yes then proceeded to moan.
I agree with almost everything they said. If they wanted to cover the football player they should have either talked about the sexual assault or they should have not covered the football player in the paper. They could do whatever they wanted to, but seems to do what they did lacks morality and it misleading the reader.
For some clairity Patrick Witt has been arrested twice before(at least one case was dropped but Im willing to bet both were) and Rhodes supposedly withdrew his application for the scholarship BEFORE he withdrew from the Interview meaning Rhodes knew about his rape case. Also unless this worman goes to the police I doubt any action will be taken against Witt. Also he is a Poli-Sci Major. Witt def. has a future in the Republican party.
John, can you wear something nicer than a t-shirt? I feel like Ana makes the effort to look really nice all the time, so you should at least do the same =]
haha oh wow. he is a football player AND in a frat? Guilty! No question. He may as well walk around with a shirt that has "I AM A RAPIST" written on it.
Sexual assault allegations are very serious, and sadly are almost always true. The newspaper had an obligation to report on the allegation, especially if she filed criminal charges (which it appears she did).
I call BS. Football players are known sociopaths who take pleasure in abusing others. Why would you socialise with such people if you don't want to be raped?
@BradODonnell I am not saying it it the fault of the victim. If anything, it is society at large that is to blame for tolerating football hooliganism and promoting promiscuity in all genders at the expense of depth of character.
We idolise athletes and fail to hold them accountable for their harmful actions as a result, where anyone else would be condemned. Of course, there are others who we generally fail to hold accountable, celebrities and religious leaders for example.
There is a big difference between a coverup and ignoring some bullshit claim form an anonymous source for which there is no fucking proof.
Making news reports about shit like this is irresponsible as fuck and you are cunts for doing it. How about waiting untill there is more evidence than just some accusation from an anonymous fucking source...
So some completely random bitch makes anonymous accusations about sexual assault and the newspaper has to publish that shit like the guy was guilty? Fucking seriously?
Maybe they are one of the few news sources with the common sense to understand that idiotic accusations can ruin a career even if they guy is proven innocent later.
Anyone can make these bullshit accusations for any fucking reason, reporting this unsubstantiated shit will just make him look guilty and is irresponsible as fuck.
Why would the news paper report it? I don't think they have any ethical obligation to do so and it would make the university look bad and may deterr people from attending. Besides, given the high number of false sexual assault claims, I actually think it is ethical for newspapers to not name the individual until they are found guilty.
I only have a problem when universities pull strings to get outside news sources to not cover the story.
Colleges are starting to be exposed for their "serpent under the flower"-like complex. Everyone thinks they're amazing, but that's because they don't report it.
This is the second time in probably less than 18 months or so that Yale has dropped the ball on matters of sexual assault. Between Yale and University of Bridgeport, or was it New Haven choosing to err on the side of anti-muslim bigotry as apposed to the black female victim of sexual assault on campus; CT is really beginning to make quite a name for itself.
@mrgraybutler She's just an attention seeking whore who wants to destroy his reputation. If anything, if she truly was sexually assaulted she would have called the cops. Hello?! Am I right or am I right?! Dumb bitch.
@mrgraybutler I think the problem might be that the school is the police. I went to a UC campus and they had "UC Police" in it. It's the immediate police to the campus if you go report something. Does anyone know if she had gone to another police station if they would have taken the case or referred them to the police where the incident happened?
@mrgraybutler In many places the police aren't much better, for most violent sexual assaults the best place to go is a hospital, doctor or calling a rape crisis phone line.
Pepper spray and kick to the nuts solves all sexual assaults, And if your a guy being sexually assault by a girl, just go with it unless she is going to kill you.
If he was black, they would have made a big deal about it, even at the expense of Yale's reputation. With that said, The Ivies always cover up their dirty laundry. Harvard did a great job covering up an drug-related execution style murder in one of its undergraduate dorms but ultimately left its own to dry because the related parties were black.
Not blaming them, in the sense I wouldn't blame someone who walks down a poor crime-ridden neighborhood with money spilling out of their pockets and get robbed.
In both cases, the one who committed the illegal act is wrong, but still, something should be said about the victim.
@AsAboveSoBelow01 i'm sorry officer, she was just too attractive, and her skirt was a tad too short. I know i'm to be blamed, but so should she. She was scantily clad officer. It's not all my fault that I raped her!! BLAMING THE VICTIM IS NEVER JUSTIFIED!!! don't embarrass yourself by continuing to argue this point.
Once again, I'm not blaming the victim (entirely). I'm merely stating to be responsible for ones action. If you're a slut and get drunk at some party, your actions are partly to blame for being sexually assaulted.
Please use your brain rather than a knee-jerk emotional responses.
@AsAboveSoBelow01 I was on a plane when terrorists hijacked the place. It's my fault, I should have known that airplanes are a major target for terrorists.
@AsAboveSoBelow01 Some asshole stole my identity by hacking into my computer and stealing my personal info. It's my fault, I shouldn't have been using the internet, knowing that there are criminals online. It's my fault!
Ya know, Ill bet that if that douche says something inappropriate at, oh say a gay biker bar, then gets his ass kicked for it, that he won't take it for "bringing it on himself" to paraphrase his idiotic idea.
@AsAboveSoBelow01 Your honor, that rich guy's house was just so nice. I saw the car in the garage, and it was tempting to steal the car. Your honor, it's not all my fault, it's the rich guy's fault. Why does he have so much money. He deserves some blame too!!. IT IS NEVER JUSTIFIED TO BLAME THE VICTIM!!!!!
If you walk down a poor crime-ridden neighborhood at night with money falling out of your pocket and gold necklaces, yes, your stupid actions did partly lead to individuals stealing your stuff. Same thing applies in certain instances of sexual assault. If you're a slut and get wasted at some frat party at 3 am, your actions led to your getting sexually assaulted.
@AsAboveSoBelow01 Ok so if you find yourself suddenly getting beaten by a hail of fists boots and the occasional bat for "being in the wrong place", you wont press charges provided you live because you "Deserved it" somehow?
My guess is no. Blaming the victim is reprehensible and denigrating to all compassionate and just people. I would suggest you feel shame but I doubt you have the empathetic ability to do so, nor the brain power to understand such big words.
I never claimed an individual shouldn't press charges, or that an individual deserved what occurred. I merely advocate that people take some responsibility for their actions. If some female is at a party at 3 am, being slutty and completely wasted from alcohol and gets sexually assaulted, her actions are partly responsible for it occurring. This doesn't mean she deserves it, or shouldn't press charges.
@AsAboveSoBelow01 explain! What exactly should be "said" about the victim. Let us all know exactly what you mean. Stop being a coward, dancing around the issue. SAY WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY!
It would depend on the situation. In the example I provided of a female at a party at 3 am, slutty and completely wasted and getting sexually assaulted, the victim is irresponsible, and their actions are partly to blame for the situation occurring.
@AsAboveSoBelow01 For your own good, don't ever become a lawyer. I would rip you apart in court, and a judge would literally embarrass you to oblivion.

I never claimed an individual shouldn't press charges, or that an individual deserved what occurred. I merely advocate that people take some responsibility for their actions. This doesn't mean she deserves it, or shouldn't press charges.
