Just saw there documentary. They are an awesome band. This is a dumb film clip but and the glam thing doesnt do them justice. The Benny Hill chase, wtf. Also saw them playing this live in Montreal on youtube, they kick ass live and would love to see them in oz one day.
What can I say about my favorite song from my favorite band and the best album they ever did.Its funny and it really rocks. It lifts my spirits when I have had a shitty day so I thank them for that.
Don't feel too sorry for these guys They became huge in Japan Rob is a friend of mine and he owns a house most of us would drool over. So Just because they didn't get big in NA means little. They have been a band for nearly thirty years
First Anvil jam I heard was this one. I requested it to a girl I had a mad crush on in high school just to piss her off because she was so mean to me. She flipped me the bird...again.
I discovered Anvil only by a couple of months. I watched the "Story of Anvil". I listened to all I could get from their albums. These guys deserve all the respect.
C'est dingue mais mon chien (un labrador qui aime la musique dont le hard rock je sais c étrange) adore cette chanson ou que je lui la chante xD "i'm juste a mad dog, i'm juste a mad mad dog ! hahooo! " xD
Back in the '80 's this was a hit song among us teeneagers,Wild Eyes another song, well great album .I was surprised they were a struggling band to this point.. Persistant too. Another band called "Fist" never made it either. A song called "Hot Spikes" should have put them on the map as well, but like Lips said and other artists have said they were exploited by record companys.
Just got home from the best ROCKIN METAL "trio" band, out right now!!! F'N ANVIL!!! ANVIL Mother EFFERS!!!!! in Portland' OR. Go see them in your town. You can't see a better show for the money period!! Robb is a monster on the drums! and Lipps rocks and there bass player Glenn 5 is awesome too. Did i tell you Robb is a Monster on the drums? 4ME. . Best, Tasteful, creative drum solo since Neil Peart.
I'd say they are pretty serious about making music, but prefer to write in a more humorous, light hearted manner, which some might not take seriously. Kind of like Steel Panther.
If you want to listen to "Strength of Steel" listen to it for the song "Straight Between the Eyes". If "Mad Dog" is to swine flu attacking the metalhead's body, then the song "Straight Between The Eyes" is the proper amount of antibiotics needed to get better.
Look Anvil does it as good as anyone, but they should have told their management team to go FUCK THEMselves for putting them in with the HAIR BAND POP METAL ERA, the saddest time for music next to RAP SHIT! Thank god for NIRVANA and the Seattle scene. It really saved Rock N Roll. Hair bands like BON JOVI-POISON--MOTELY CREW--TWISTED SISTER--A FUCKING EMBARRASMENT!
Thank-you. Finally someone actually took the time to read what I posted rather than some stupid overgrown 16 year old and say 'FUKK U U IZ GAY FOR DISSIN' MAH FAVORITE BAND" like a goddamn mongoloid.
I remeber this on Mtv and I thought it was a let down after being into Metal on Metal. This was a time when the videos were getting really corney and some bands were trying to worite hits for video play. This band still rocks hard and still around today. That says somthing and they like to rock. I am going to see them Jan 21. Support Anvil because the next piece of crap band the industry supports will suck and you will be saying how come there is no good music.
5. Last but not least...remember the time this album came out, 1987...that was one year between albums like "Master of Puppets", "An Justice for All", "South of Heaven" and "Reign In Blood". It was fucking doomed from the get-go. You really think kids are going to want to listen to this when at the time the Big 4 were all hitting their creative peaks? Use your head. Not to mention "Mad Dog" sounds like fucking Georgia Satellites trying to cover Motley Crue with twisted Sister humor thrown in.
The reason for this song and the overall commercial feel of Strength of Steel was because there was pressure from the second guitarist Dave Allison and Robb Reiner to go to a more commercial sound but Lips was vehemitly opposed to changing Anvil's sound due to integrity, so this album is a compramise to go with a lighter more commercial sound but still try to retain some hard edge in a few of the songs. You can read all about it in the book Anvil! the Story of Anvil
this was the first song i heard of them when seeing the video in 1987. they didnt seem like a serious or heavey Band. i like this song but their other songs are good also. was never huge on Anvil, i was surpised to see in a small theater "the story of Anvil" i was like ? Anvil there not even a "Big Band"
The documentary is about just what you mentioned - this band influenced dozens of others (including Metallica, Anthrax) but themselves disappeared into obscurity.
IMO, They deserved it. These guys treated Metal like it was a big dumb cartoon, and there were plenty of them during that time period. I could barely stand the state of Metal at that time, and was reverting to older Priest/Dio/Sabbath/Accept material to suffer through the glam period.
2. Just because they are an influence of bands like Metallica or Slayer doesn't grant them the same level of success as the big 4. Would you say the same about other NWOBHM bands and proto-thrash acts like Blitzkrieg, Diamond Head, Raven, etc?
3. Even Lemmy said "if you're not doing the right thing at the right time, you're not going anywhere".
4. This song is a fucking joke to other albums that I LOVE by Anvil. Compare this to anything off "Metal On Metal", or "Forged In Fire".
Anvil wonder why their popularity went down the shitter, well here you go. This is the equivelent of Twisted Sister's "Leader of The Pack".
This is probably the worst thing they did to their career. not to mention the rest of the album "Strength of Steel" wasn't that great when compared to the two albums that came before it, and the albums they would make afterwards.
I am an asshole because I am telling you the truth?
I love how people come in here and whine about how they weren't bigger and repeat the same shit they heard from the documentary. Not to mention constantly reminded by VH1's great promotional team every 15 seconds during commercial breaks.
Anvil did not get big due to a few reasons;
1. Their time was up. Their brand of metal was usurpered by Metallica and Slayer and the likes.
I completely agree with you gerneralfuckpants. When this video was made, Metallica's more serious brand of metal was wiping out all the hair metal bands like motely crue, which were getting too silly, too juvenile, and too irrelevant. And then grunge wiped out heavy metal because it came at a time when the kids listening to metal in the 80's grew up and needed a more introspective music.
I like it how they make Lips seem like this really giant guy. Judging by all the footage related to the documentary on VH-1 Classic, he actually looks average height at best. BTW VH-1 should just change their name to the Anvil Channel and get it over with!
This video is the very reason why Anvil sunk into obscurity. I mean compared to "Metal On Metal", this shit sounds like E'Nuf Z'Nuff or Trixter at best.
I'm happy for their overnight success with their documentary, but that doesn't mean everything they put out is pure gold. This song just sucks.
I remember seeing these guys with The Killer Dwarfs, in London Ontario back in I think, 1984-85?? Anvil was the pre-cursor to alot of heavy bands that were up and comming at the time. Good to see they are still getting attention! Metal on Metal was an anthem for me growing up as a young metal head at the time!
Kinda weird to think about, but without knowing it, all my fav. metal bands preformed at the 1984 Super Rock in Japan. Anvil, Michael Schenker Group, Scorpions, Whitesnake etc.
Only a few of the bands got sucessfull though. And the best ones (MSG, Anvil) remained in obscurity.
well thats the reason why they didnt have commercial success, they never wrote commercial music.this is about as commercial as they get.they are a true metal bang, not a sell out.
Yeah, but still. A lot of commercially succesfull metal bands havent sold out, take Iron Maiden for example. They're still playing the same style of music as they always have. I mean, sure, their late 80's stuff was kinda pop-ish (IMO), but they were already big before they 'sold out'.
@glynnracing79 commercial music huh? I suppose that is one way of looking at it.But for me and many others we are now getting to see the band achieve a lot of recognition and I am very happy for them.
I'd hardly call them thrash....more like second-rate glam rock. There is nothing thrash about them. Go buy an Exodus or a Defiance album if you want thrash. I was never into Anvil in the 80's and 90's and I know why now...their story is compelling and I will see the movie....but let's be honest. The music is not very original or good.
You're gonna talk about heavy and then talk shit about death metal? You might wanna check your ears man.
Anvil by no means is all that heavy, but neither am I saying they're not a great band. Seriously though, I can't think of an Anvil album that's heavier than a Deicide or a Morbid Angel album.
yep I sure did talk shit about death metal cause lyrically thats what it is... I like the Instrumental stuff the heavy stuff of it but when they start screaming nahhh thanx
Haha wow. Do you even bother to look at lyrics for the classic death metal bands? Death is a fine example, I'm sure their later albums will exceed your expectations. Also there's a major technique difference in screaming and gutterals, sounds a lot different too.
My favorite metal video ever!! l actually have a Metal Blade VHS tape with this video on it, plus other vids by Lizzy Borden, Armored Saint, Candlemass, Bitch, Fates Warning, and lots of other bands. l should watch it again just for old times' sake.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The reason they didnt get popular is because they suck! Always have and always will. I would put their music style next to Ratt. They in my opinion are not any form of Metal at all.
dwnar hit the nail on the head. We are watching videos of these old bands that guys like me were lucky enough to have influence us while growing up. The kids today don't get that since MTV doesn't even show music videos anymore. Damn shame. It was fun back then, bands did some crazy shit.

Well, they didn't really sell out. They just changed their sound in the late 80's to a more pop-ish sound.
But that's just my oponioun :)

@glynnracing79 commercial music huh? I suppose that is one way of looking at it.But for me and many others we are now getting to see the band achieve a lot of recognition and I am very happy for them.

anvil kicks ass! always has and always will! long before the movie got em 'overnight fans'
i've been a fan since 82 and they've always delivered killer tunes and plenty of energy!

Girl in video is not Rob's wife, has the same hair, but it's not her, i know his wife well.
This song was an obvious attempt at being Ted Nugent!

How well do you know her? (Rim Shot)

GREAT video.
Very underrated 80s thrash band.
hopefully the Story Of Anvil film will finally get this band some much needed respect.
I saw the film the other day and it was incredible.

Heavy sounds man, lyrics are all fucked up tho hahahahaha but on that note... anything better then all that death metal yuk!
pescador1 2 years ago
You're gonna talk about heavy and then talk shit about death metal? You might wanna check your ears man.
Anvil by no means is all that heavy, but neither am I saying they're not a great band. Seriously though, I can't think of an Anvil album that's heavier than a Deicide or a Morbid Angel album.
fendermustang123 2 years ago
yep I sure did talk shit about death metal cause lyrically thats what it is... I like the Instrumental stuff the heavy stuff of it but when they start screaming nahhh thanx
pescador1 2 years ago
Haha wow. Do you even bother to look at lyrics for the classic death metal bands? Death is a fine example, I'm sure their later albums will exceed your expectations. Also there's a major technique difference in screaming and gutterals, sounds a lot different too.
fendermustang123 2 years ago
listein to their album plugged in permanent and tell me that isnt heavy

Worth the waith!
Brilliant album!

The singer looks like a mix of Ozzy Osbourne + Noddy Holder (from the 80's) + Gene Simmons, or something like that

My favorite metal video ever!! l actually have a Metal Blade VHS tape with this video on it, plus other vids by Lizzy Borden, Armored Saint, Candlemass, Bitch, Fates Warning, and lots of other bands. l should watch it again just for old times' sake.

The reason they didnt get popular is because they suck! Always have and always will. I would put their music style next to Ratt. They in my opinion are not any form of Metal at all.

Oh yeah ! Slipknot is it !
New Metal is not equal Heavy Metal and never will be!

You'd have to be utterly clueless, not to mention tone deaf, to compare Anvil to Ratt. That's like saying Slipknot sounds like The Mars Volta.
SabuPtolemy 2 years ago
Anvil is a Kanadian band. They're only like 75% metal with the exchange rate.
rockdaddio 2 years ago
dwnar hit the nail on the head. We are watching videos of these old bands that guys like me were lucky enough to have influence us while growing up. The kids today don't get that since MTV doesn't even show music videos anymore. Damn shame. It was fun back then, bands did some crazy shit.
