At 6:33, my father is the Marine reaching up to help the other Marine lower down the Marine who had just been killed by a Japanese sniper. He said right after that the Japanese unleashed a ferocious bombardment on them. Actually that particular footage is taken from actions on Peleliu.

Guadalcanal should have been a lot easy if not for the US Navy. Poor coordination and over confidence almost cost the US the battle. But unlike some, US learned of its mistakes and got better.
