@JSavic Carl Perkins started wearing a wig or rug as you say, in 1956 to cover up the cuts he received in an auto accident which occured in March of that year. Carl never had much hair to begin with so he just kept on wearing various hair systems for the remainder of his life. The rugs he wore during the 60s I think looked the best. They were short and neat. In the 70s, 80s and 90s they got too long and shaggy looking. I was always more interested in his music then his hair anyway.
im just gonna out this out there but im sure u all kno this. moviemagg has no idea wat he is talking about. im not knocking carl perkins he was cool but moviemagg is making it hard to enjoy and comment on a simple video
@Gunfighter200077 This is the last time Im gonna say this. Dude, don't take my word for it. Just go read the book, GO CAT GO written by Carl Perkins himself, and you will see that he was playing Elvis's kind of music, (rockabilly) before he ever heard the name of Elvis. Carl says it in his book. Go to page 79 where Carl's wife says to Carl they play the same style that you do, after they both here Elvis's record of Blue Moon of Kentucky on the radio. Carl had been playing that stlye since 1947!
Presley has been put on a pedestal by far too many folks. He was no king of rock-and-roll. In its earliest days he was its most successful star, hence that title from the press. Rock existed BEFORE Presley: check out Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, many others.
The Beatles did a cover version of this song. Ringo sang lead. He shouts out "Rock out George, one time for Ringo!" All the Beatles were huge Carl Perkins fans. Paul did a duet with Carl on Paul's 1982 Tug Of War album while George and Ringo both appeared on Carl's mid-80's cable TV special.
You are so wrong! Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash were playing their own style of Music long before they ever heard of Elvis. Bill Haley and the Comets were the first real Rock and Roll Stars ever. Then came the true King of Rock and Roll and that was Chuck Berry. Chuck Berry is the one who inspired Buddy Holly and Elvis himself. Roy Orbison was Inspired by Johnny Cash who got him into Sun Records. You may be right about Gene Vincent. But Perkins was playing his style of music since 1952!
@moviemagg Actually you are wrong. Listen to any interview with Carl Perkins he always says it was when he heard Elvis' version of Blue Moon of Kentucky that got into this type of music. Prior to this he was strictly a country singer with his band. They played honky tonks & what not. Monroe's, original, Blue Moon of Kentucky was Carl Perkins favorite song, but when he heard Elvis' version that changed his life and went to Sun Records immediately after.
@moviemagg Also listen to early interviews with Chuck Berry, again it was after he heard Elvis' That's Alright & Blue Moon of Kentucky, that it inspired him to re-write and old country song called Ida Red and called it Maybeline. Which was Chuck Berry's first recorded song.
@moviemagg you sir r wrong bc carl and johnny didnt think of rockabilly until they heard elvis. johnny was playing gospel and carl was playing hank williams type country. also buddy holly was inspired by elvis bc he himself was playing country until he heard elvis in concert. so if u dont kno the facts dont go knocking ppl
@Gunfighter200077 No! you sir could not be more wrong. Carl Perkins WAS playing rockabilly way before he ever even heard of Elvis. At the time, (1951 to 1953) the term rockabilly was not widley used so hence, Carl had never heard of it. Just read the book Go Cat Go written by Carl Perkins in 1997 and you will learn for yourself that Carl and his brothers were indeed playing that style of music (rockabilly). Carl never copied anybodys style. So don't go getting your cowbells in an huff.
@moviemagg u obviously have no clue wat ur talking about. ur just an obsessive fan who has no idea wat ur talking about. cowbells in a huff? lmao tht was terrible
@Gunfighter200077 Ever feel like your talkin to a brick wall? Carl Perkins was playing the same type of music (rockabilly) in the local Honky Tonks since 1947. He says that in his book, GO CAT GO on the bottom of page 79. Go read it for yourself. Don't take my word for it. Carl and his brothers did not learn that style of music from watching Elvis and thats a fact. Sit down for a spell. Take your shoes off. Ya-all come back now, ya here!
everybody needs 2 stop knocking elvis, it was elvis who inspired gene vincent, buddy holly, johnny cash, roy orbison and even carl perkins 2 play rockabilly and rock and roll. so yes elvis is the king of rock!
@Gunfighter200077 Gene Vincent predates Elvis. Vincent was a star before I ever heard of Elvis Presley. Don't get me wrong, I loved Elvis, but Gene was there first.
@14nomonkeys not to say you dont know your facts but Elvis was before Gene. Gene came into the game because he heard Elvis play and it transformed him and then studios wanted ppl tht sounded like Elvis. thts when gene came in. lol
@14nomonkeys Just because you heard of Gene Vincent first, does not mean he predated Elvis. Gene Vincent 1st recorded song 1956, Elvis 1953 and first Elvis commercial record 1954.
I don't believe that Sam Phillips used "poor judgement" in not releasing "Honey Don't" on it's own. Sam didn't know that "Blue Suede Shoes" was going to be a hit. Rock and roll was new and unpredictable. Hindsight is 20/20.
@russieross I have to say you are wrong about that. The second after Carl and his band recorded Blue Suede Shoes at Sun Studios on December 24th 1955, Sam Phillips rushed out of the control room shouting, thats a hit, thats a hit record for sure! You boys have got yourselfs a hit. You can find this info in the book Go Cat Go written by Carl in 1996. He should have used another song like "Perkins Wiggle" or "Dixie Fried" as the B-side and issued Honey Dont as another A-side later on.
@moviemagg After reading some of your posts here, it all becomes very tiring to read just how many people are "wrong" in this forum. Stop pretending to be the all-knowing rockabilly expert. You don't know it all. Avoid acting like one who does.
@aluragranddad I never claimed to be an expert on Rockabilly or to know it all. That's what you said. But I will say, when it comes to the History of Rock n Roll, Rockabilly Music and Carl Perkins, I do know my facts. And that's for sure!
@moviemagg What you say and how you act are sometimes 2 different things. You are arrogant and therefore repulsive. Exactly where in "Go Cat Go" is Sam Phillips credited for saying what you have claimed? Even though you may prove your point on that little matter (I don't know; I haven't read the book), nevertheless you come on as a know it all. You know your facts? I doubt it.
Carl always presented himself as a true gentleman, and you can see how much he really feels his music everytime he takes the stage. One of the overlooked pioneers of rock n' roll who sadly is no longer with us. His influence outweighed his commercial success.
That was great. Carl was great. Paul is so lucky to play with all the legends that come on the Letterman show. There probably isn't anyone he hasn't played with.
I love Carl but I gotta say, I think he is sporting a rug. I'm surprised no one ever mentioned it before. Likewise Scotty Moore in the 68 special.
