If you read Hannibal, you'll find out that Sterling and Hannibal are really in love. The movie watered down this idea, but it hints at it when Hannibal sacrifices his own hand instead of hers - a symbolic gesture of love perhaps?

Yeah - I've never liked that idea, and it was around that time I started to go off Harris a lot. Lecter, as a sociopath, is much more effective when he is portrayed as loveless, and it is totally against Clarice's character to go loving after Hanni. Harris has some very good ideas for characters, and stories, but since Hannibal, which was in itself excusable, I've completely lost faith in him. The changes the movies make are completely for the best. In my opinion, of course.
