It's good seeing my old encoding up on Youtube.. I remember when I Had my original account put this together from the VHS I had. Since then I have re upped in HD... Thank you...
the spacing of the comping by basie in the beginning is soooo perfect and unique. jesus that bassist can rip. his bass playing reminds me of slide guitar. this is just absolutely awesome
Man, these cats are smokin"!!! If anyone ever heard of "Mama don't wear no drawers" by The Count let me know because that's another sizzlin' jam session.
Incredible Count ! Always genereous toward the band with a guiding piano touch. Few notes but always accurate with enormous emotion effect. A really great artist.(sorry for my poor english).
I'm a bass player. I wish I could play like that. What was wrong with the bass playing? This cat KNOWS what he is doing and is a master of the upright bass.
@kcbigbandjazz I also play Bass, and it takes years to learn how to play like that but if you love jazz and love the bass, youll learn. Yea, Mr Eaton was killing that bass. If you like great walking basslines, also check out Mr Ray Brown the master of walking basslines.
the count is soooooo cool ! lotta humor and precise playing..I'm not talking about chops but precision... the ability to play EXACTLY the right note or notes at the right time
So Zoot was listening to Count and Cleve . . . Big deal. If I was there I would probably be listening to them also. They are great. This is a really great video -- I listen to it all the time! Zoot just swings. Marvelous group and session.
I'm not sure what happened, but it seems like he was caught up into listening to Cleve, Count, and Duffy and forgot he was supposed to come in! But when he did, he did it in a "cool" style, as if though he meant to do it that way!
i agree, he just knows how to dig. Its like the ideas just flow from his brain out his horn with no delay. I find Zoot to be just a really interesting Icon. Ive watched this video over 200 times. Always find something interesting about it.
It's sad that only 2 600 people have seen this video :P Count Basie is the king =D Ever heard his version of Watermelon Man on the "Coctail Jazz" collection? Nice track, man ;)
magnifico video. lo hermoso es como disfrutan al interpretar su mùsica. y nuevamente reitero la introducciòn de basie a su bajista de lo mejor. disfruten el video amantes del jazz porque de èsto desgraciadamente ya no hay.
Who is this Cleveland Eaton cat? Damn! Duffy lives in my town now. I've seen him play live in a close setting a buncha times, he's a monster. And the most entertaining guy on the planet!
At the time Duffy was the new drummer for Basie's band and that was an honor. I'm a washboard player myself and I have made the same mistakes as Duffy. Much like Duffy I tend to get too excited and I am sure that he worked to correct it like I'm working to correct my flaws.
i didnt mean it as an insult, i love this video and duffy is one of my favourite drummers, im a drummer myslef although no where near duffys level and everyone makes mmistakes. i just thought the look that eaton gave him was funny.....
I love this video too and I also like Duffy. I'm glad that you didn't mean it as an insult! Obviously we have an understanding for each other since both of us are percussionists and that is good!
After Duffy turned around the beat, Basie and Cleve looked at each other with that (oh poor little white boy) look. hehe. No offense everyone, its just a joke. hehe. But, yes, he does swing hard. And Cleveland, what else is there to say. Legend...
Duffy doesn't mess up he just rushed the solo a little, and the band didn't follow him.happens to all of us from time to time.Duffy's plays hiss ass off all of the time, most swing'in drummer ever!
Thanks for posting this. Until recently it was on YouTube but, for whatever reason, was taken down. Everything about it--Bill Basie's rhythm, Zoot Sims' lyricism, Duffy Jackson's timing, Roy Eldridge's smoothness, Cleveland Eaton's electricity--is diabolical. I can listen to it indefinitely.
I had downloaded this video earlier, and I'm glad I did! I was sad to see it disappear when the account closed that it was posted on. Zoot was caught sleepin a little bit...but it was no big deal for the Count; he just rolls with that kind of thing.

it seems like Zoot was suppose to start his solo 12 bars earlier and CB looks a little pissed. What do you think?

Well, the number of viewers to this just keeps going up and up. Great music and
great musicians have a way of doing that.
Look at all the TALENT here on one stage!
The legends of Swing. Duffy Jackson keeps the flame burning here in Middle TN now. We are so lucky to have him. He
is a walking encyclopedia of Jazz. This is so good. I watch it over and over.
