The sponsor for this show was Motts Applesauce. Everytime I see Motts in the supermarket I think of Amos & Andy. Was a fun show to watch and the GOP still thinks black people should act like this.
The early 1660s I was serving in the United States Marine Corps. Every day you could pass the day room. You could hear screams of laughter. There would be 15or 20 African American Marines rolling on the floor and howling at the TV..What were they watching ? Amos and Andy.I would.observe from the doorway and laugh myself..
Along with The Beverly Hillbillys Amos and Andy.made us laugh at ourselves..
At least with these laugh tracks the tracks match some real genuine humor...These gentlemen were the greatest of the big time radio shows long since past...I recall these guys making me laugh as a Kid...I was never able to see the picture portion of the show just the sound...we were poor.....I am so glad they are available through YOU TUBE!! I would watch every one of these!!!!.
(cont'd) AND TO THE IDIOT POSTER "CROCKASACK" RACISTS BREED WITH OTHERS----DOESN'T MAKE THEM ANY LESS RACIST, OR ANY MORE INTELLECTUAL---HENCE, YOUR STUPID-ASS POST. STROM THURMOND HAD A BABY WITH AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMAN.....HERNAN CORTEZ SLAUGHTERED THOUSANDS OF INDIGENOUS TRIBES IN MEXICO---AND HE HAD MALINCHE AS HIS MISTRESS.....YOUR LUST FOR ANOTHER TRIBE IS NOT A "PASS" FOR YOU TO BE A RACIST. DON'T CONFUSE LUST/DESIRE WITH ACTIVISM, OR INTELLECT.
Some of you can try to sound so "progressive" if you want to. But, the issue wasn't necessarily the stereotypes of the main characters.....but the fact they were next to NONE as far as shows or movies in "mainstream" (code word for marketing to majority Caucasian, or international audiences....who are also raised on majority Caucasian-American movies, Euro movies and culture). If there is no balance----then yeah, that's a problem.
Amos and Andy overall was well written and the actors were ever so funny BUT the Kingfish as much as i loved him always tried to cheat a good friend Andy and had no redeeming qualities which left a negative moral feeling about the show
I loved this show as a small boy - one of the first shows I can ever remember watching. Tim Moore was my hero. The Kingfish was so cool. Strange how the NAACP jumped all over Amos and Andy and got it taken off the air. Nobody complained about Laurel and Hardy being anti-white, or Jackie Gleason and Art Carney being racists. The Three Stooges were Jewish and no Jews tried to get them banned.
I love black folks my wife is black and my son is half black and chicano cuban.i must say though yo niggas are way too bitch sensitive i still can't believe how they get so but hurt over stupid shit like this. Instead of scrutinizing this great art of comedy and turning it in to some'em positive as in these jews and white folks couldn't come up with ideas of their own they gotta display our culture of our black people.
I see Amos and Andy as black Beavis and Butthead, only much more wholesome. To me its just some really funny black guys, not a commentary on race. I can see how A&A perpetuated racial stereotypes, especially in the 50's, but here in 2011 some of us have moved on from silly racial issues.
The fact that the clips from this show have persisted for so long and are as popular as ever is a testimony to the talent of the actors and writers of this wonderful program. For many of us, it was our introduction to all-black casts. Yes, a lot of this is way over the top, but the writers were careful to ensure that Kingfish always got his just desserts. There was always a moral lession mixed in with the comedy. Today's "comedy" shows on television are not fit to watch.
The racism isnt really blatant... its subtle remarks... like how the "rushing" rant was obvious sarcasm about him actually being lazy... and Andy bought all of what he was saying... so the stereotypes are laziness and stupidity... Well considering they worked for free for 300 years I wouldnt call that lazy... lol... I also wouldnt say that the old time blacks are stupid but rather UNEDUCATED!!! If you arent taught you cant learn... proven fucking fact
@michaelaaronmahoney You're a white guy who is reading way too much into Amos and Andy. These characters are portrayed with no more derision than many, many white TV characters of the era. For God's sake, look at the white characters in Mayberry County. A little lesson in comedy- caricatured portrayals are funny.
@nealkassanoff Im glad you didnt go and call me a cunt like poopstain up top lol... but I can see where youre coming from but the issue I have with the show is not really the show but the media of the era... all black people were portrayed as ignorant, lazy, hungry bafoons that the society called Niggers... There were plenty of well respected white people portrayed in film but how many well respected black people in media before Sidney Poitier hit the scene???
@michaelaaronmahoney Frankly, I don't know enough about Amos and Andy to come out swinging. What I can tell you is that when I bothered to actually look at any of the episodes, I didn't find the negative racist stereotypes that I was expecting via the oft repeated reputation of the show. As far as Poitier goes, I am far more offended by the patronizing idealized portrayal in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner than anything I've seen on an Amos and Andy episode.
@nealkassanoff how so?? the end of the movie was beautiful... I mean the father came to grips that he is a decent guy!!! and watch Heat of the Night for a better look at the type of people Sidney played... Like I said its not like they (media) only had one show of an ignorant black person(s) its every black person in media at the time!!! They were either good for nothings or some wise cracking nanny or some other form of "help"
@michaelaaronmahoney Whatever dude. I'm looking at this episode of Amos and Andy and I see some silly characters who happen to be black, not racist portrayals. I've seen Guess Who's... and its a piece of shit film with a central character so idealized as to be utterly uninteresting. I don't want Hollywood righting any wrongs by patronizing me as a viewer with such obvious "racism-is-bad" cliches.
@nealkassanoff also they black faced the already black actors lmao... I will say that some of the criticism on this particular series is heavy at times but if I was a black person of the era I would be kind of pissed that the only blacks I see on tv are moronic and downright ignorant... this has nothing to do with me feeling a sense of guilt because Im of heavy Irish decent... we had our rough patch in American Hi*STORY* also... But I wont complain because we got our freedom rather fast
@michaelaaronmahoney I think we need to be more aware of how racial tensions are amplified and exploited by a ruling elite to divide us and our common interests rather than worry about how much black face make up was used for the Amos and Andy Show. I am not trying to be contentious. I'm just offering that for consideration. A rather broad tangent, but worth considering nonetheless.
@nealkassanoff on Facebook I made a list comparing the black "thug" to that of the white "rednek" and the comparisons are staggering. They share so many common interests without even realizing it! As kids we were taught intolerance.less my generation than the generations before me though but I was raised in the South and still a lot of hatred. It truly shows how the educational system and parents have failed the future of this nation.although the Nation was built on the principles they were taught
@michaelaaronmahoney Comedian who died in early nineties. Talks about the "demons of mediocrity" who are the staple of pop culture personalities. The essence of the pop culture machine is about dumbing us down and dulling our minds.
@michaelaaronmahoney Of course you are, you're the typical white guilt filled asshole that thinks that you're in a position to tell everybody what they should think and feel because you think you're smarter than everybody else. People like you are the reason why music, movies, and tv are for the most part shit because its so watered down because if theres anything that can even be misconstrued as offensive it gets taken out because cunts like u with too much time will complain about it
@poopstainmcgoo damn dude. you a computer thug huh? gettin big behind a keyboard? lmao. I gave an educated opinion and you managed to fire back by calling me a cunt. Its not like I said this shit is extraordinarily racist but rather how society saw the stereotypical black person of the era. Sidney Poitier is like one of the first black men in Hollyweird that didnt act like a. dare I say? Nigger. He always played well respected roles and did quite well.. when was he big?? 1960s
@jamieblond1. Right, I am 100% ghetto( I was being Sarcastic stupid whore) -___-, and if you were referring to my username I was unaware that the city or urban area is "ghetto" but whatever. On the other hand could you get a life and stop commenting back because I dont want to see you in my email anymore and i'm not going to respond back because this is old so you will be talking to yourself. Well, sayonara bitch! :)
I listened to this show on the radio - It was the most popular program on the air with over 40 million listners for 30 years or so - It than moved to tv in 1960 & was just as popular - unfortunately it was taken of because of some "do-gooders" who called it racist and put out of work some of best black actors of the time. I continue to listen and enjoy this show on youtube and on the web - If this program was racist so was the Beverly Hillbillies.
Never seen it before. Racist. ? I don't think so, though the steriotypes are all through it. But then, the movies were full of stereotypes, so I find it no worse, just typical of the times.
I don't understand the Naacp. They took this off the air. B ut a program like Sanford & Son about a lazy, lying good for nothing they loved. Or Good Times with that retardedJJ & his {dynomite}By axing this show they put two really telented performers Tim Moore & Spencer Williams out of work.
@macemcguire Naacp didn't take it off air, It was the Pittsburgh Courier, which made a better argument than the NAACP. You really need to research it, before writing your failed post.
@macemcguire You know perfectly well they took it off due to pressure from the Naacp. That doesn't altar the rest of my statement. Tim & Spencer were still out of work.
Well the NAACP black listed Hattie McDaniels also. They almost destroyed her career; the poor woman making a honest living and a great actor who in real life lived with pride and dignity. Listening to this, I still don't get the offensive dialogue the NAACP was so up in arms about. Today, God forbid a black man speak like Bill Crosby and its the same old, talking white and trying to be white. You just can't win!
this was flat out the , repeat THE funniest thing ever seen on the small screen. If that makes me a racist be sure you print it in a big R big A big C in fact bit letters for the entire word. But Mr. Lincoln general grant is a drunkard. That so? Then send a barrel of whiskey to all my generals. If it takes racism to be this funny then every TV show should be racist to the core. Man o man was this show funny.
Amos and Andy paved the way for shows like The Beverly Hillbillys, All in the Family, The Jeffersons, et. al. They pioneered television comedy. There was no "racism" about it. Even the blacks listened to (the radio version) and watched (the television version) and thoroughly enjoyed it. But, I guess, that's when people could truly sit back and laugh at themselves without playing the race card. We whites laugh at the Beverly Hillbillys. No diff.
Amos 'n Andy was a show about people, getting into situations that are common to people of all races. If you really listen to this show, you will be hard pressed to find anything that approaches some of the edgy references made on shows like Good Times and The Jeffersons.
The radio program was so popular the movie theaters would stop a movie while the program was on(15 min) and continue the movie. They were suffering from lack of attendance. Farmers during the day ate lunch when the program was on. At one time 80% of all radio listeners listened to this program. That is a record that will stand forever. Glad Laurel & Hardy, the 3 Stooges ,etc were not black. We'd be missing much ingenious humor.Redd Foxes favorite.

its funny the naacp put the squash on this show, but the other "shuckin and jivin" shows of the 70's were much more offensive and stereotypical. most people seem to think "black" television started with "julia" and "i spy" in the 60's.
Amos and Andy similar to Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello and other innovative comedies were among the most popular comedies of their time. Even though all depicted characters as silly and sometimes ignorant as a base for laughter, their intentions were to unite the people in hilarity. The white kids in our neighborhood never missed an episode, growing up. It is a double edge attitude for those who would construe the good to be bad. Besides these folks made a profitable living.

All I have to say is that this show has a hell of a lot more entertainment value and class than a lot of the crap that's on TV today. At least it isn't a bunch of gansta rap and crap like that.
@AnalOrgy Not a lot of "death by Nazi" in the 1950s. Schools used to teach kids well enough for them to know that. This was back before Anal Orgies brought about AIDS too. Better times, better times.
I remember Marla Gibbs explaining why the NAACP became offended by this series and The Beulah Show (perpetuating stereotypes, etc). I think we're past that now so could we please just bring these funny sitcoms back?
I remember when I was a kid watching the Amos & Andy Show on our new B&W TV. We would have our friends over to watch after school. Have a room full. I think we were the first family in our area to get a TV. Thats when a TV show was a show.
Not like at the stuff on TV now. No wonder kids are like they are now. You had to be 18 to see stuff like that in the movies when I come along. Now its on TV for all to see from 1year old to 18 year old.
Why did the NAACP end this show? It looks look they're portraying African American's as country, and using broken english. Ain't ya momma type of stuff. That really upsets me.
This show enforced established black stereotypes, but also helped whites identify with blacks a little more at the time, still, the bad definitely outweighed the good, which led to the short time it had on television. It's amazing how the first, movie(Birth of a Nation), the first radio sitcom(Amos N' Andy) and the first television show in U.S. culture all dealt immensely with the concept of race.
I dunno this just looks like a black version of peti coat junction. The people on sitcoms are sometimes complete exagerations the bundys are an example or HEE HAW? much ado about nothing....
The only black Folk this bad with money are the ones scripted this way for television. If you want to see Black Folk good with money, watch The Bill Cosby Show.
you have to remember up til this show there were almost no blacks on tv but it still portays blacks in a somewhat negative light, but in the 50s it was funny i was around
Put down the KoolAid, macton; you're the insane one.
Every chance that loons like you get, you scream "racist."
This was a show that people of ALL colors enjoyed.
You're simply incapable of appreciating a very funny show because of your vacuous, neo-fascist idelology
If Amos and Andy is "racist," then so is the Beverly Hillbillies. Why aren't you upset about that show? Oh, that's right, racism against whites is ok, isn't it?
Take your "r word" and shove it sideways, you clueless cretin !
I agree. In fact I would go as far to say that this show was to promote racial equality during its time. People will always work in the context of there time and I would imagine that an all black show was considered very progressive during that time. I would also say as a hillbilly form N.C. seeing a bunch of yankees try to play hillbillys never offended me. Nor could I imagine that this show offended anyone during its running. If our generation is offended, to bad it was not made for us.
Thanks, clyff. Maybe one of the unintended consequences of Amos & Andy WAS to promote racial equality to some degree.
Btw, I didn't mean to imply that the Beverly Hillbillies was a racist show. I was just using that to make a point to the clueless one, macton, if he was so upset about perceived "racism."
@logansGT Forget classic, this piece of crap show is demeaning to african americans because they are acting like coons to sell the show, and they agreed with it to make money. Your so dumb you just cant analyze the racism because it doesn't offend your race.
@logansGT What does my user name have to do with anything. 2. I'm not easily led i have a mind of my own which apparently you're missing. 3. If you look at the episode or more episodes its obvious that most of their family members and friends are crooks, and that they act like complete idiots. 4. A leftard would be more like someone who would say something like- this video has devil worshipping. And finally you should really try the spell check before you call someone a dumbass. DUMB BASTERD!!!!
@logansGT Well said sir. I salute you. Dave Chappel and Chris Rock figured out making fun of everybody PAID good. Amos and Andy were ahead of their time, not behind it. This is great art here, not racism. There is so little real racism anymore, everybody is tired of the subject.
@logansGT You can tell the racist person by the stereotype comments. Spit facts you caveman, genetically recessive, co-existing Neanderthal, manifest destiny, enslavement, genocide, and lack of human compassion zoophilia ass to the caucASS mountains in which your dirty ancestors crawled from begging the Africans for knowledge, food, and technology. Learn your history you sun-burnt piece of shit. This proves time and time again that white people have no soul (no rhythm mothafucka)
@843Killaville And you can tell a delusional, semi-educated dumb-ass by their stereotypical, ignorant racist comments. Assholes such as yourself are the reason that there's still racial problems in the world.
wow that's messed up, racist, and i like tyler perry. to each is own i guess. and what tyler perry shows have you been watching. madea is not rich at all just a very no non sense type of woman.
Say what you want....we have the right to disagree...but I deleted my comment anyway. It's obvious it offended the young race police crowd. Maybe when you guys get a little more world experience under your belts, you'll look back and realize how "insanely racist" modern blacks actually are and how the world has to stop turning to try and heal wounds that your courageous ancestors had to endure. I might recommend a movie that will suit your 'anger towards Whitey mood'...The Pursuit of Happyness.
lol i have seen pursuit of happyness plenty of times. it's a very good movie, but i dont know what it has to do with your comment saying that black people are unaccomplished people. and yes you are right black people are racist just like white people are racist. look i'm a very educated person who reads alot. and i think that is the problem with not only with the young black race but other races as well. we dont take the time to learn from our previous generations mistakes.
i think it's time out for all of this black vs black, black vs white drama. if we took the time out and actually observed one another we would see that we have alot in common and that we are fighting over stupid things. i believe love will conquer hate. and i hope that we will get it right one day before it's too late. your welcome to talk me anytime.
Thanks for the dignified reply...But, I never said anything about Black people being "unaccomplished people". Only that modern racism is totally different than the old true racism that used to affect black lives so drastically. And that so many modern Blacks are doing their best to keep that dying racism alive: Wanting the world to stop turning as punishment for the wounds their Ancestors suffered. Black people ARE VERY capable of accomplishment.....just too mad at "Whitey" to move on sometimes
@naml1984 "black people are racist just like white people are racist" the difference is that our so called "racism" holds no power or institution. If it was fair in the beginning there would not be any black "racism" or imo resentment.
I listened to Amos 'n' Andy on the radio when Freeman Godsen and Charles Corel did the voices and our family never missed an episode when they came on tv. In fact the entire country loved the show.
The reason that the NAACP protested this show was that it was the only example of blacks on TV at the time. Black people wanted more positive images to be shown. Whites were shown as heroes as well as buffoons. All the same, the actors on this show were outstanding and the show was a great example of ensemble acting! Spencer Williams, who played Andy, was an independent filmmaker and was the Spike Lee of the 1940s, and Tim Moore, who played Kingfish, was a brilliant comic actor.
This show was an exaggeration like all TV, but in a lot of ways it was accurate as hell, too. Being a musician, I've hung out with lots of Black guys who truly act about like Kingfish and his buddies. Why is it that every time someone tries to portray ONE SMALL group of Blacks for what they are...a bunch of uptight assholes get offended and suggests they're claiming ALL BLACKS are EXACTLY like this or that? What's the matter with you guys? Who are you really pissed at? Be yourselves, have fun
Compare this with the much more offensive, but hilarious "Sanford & Son".
Fred, Grady & Bubber were almost copies of Kingfish, Andy & Lightning. The "N" word was never used in Amos & Andy, but was used a lot by Fred Sanford.
Why was Sapphire so offensive, yet the ranting Aunt Esther wasn't? Sanford & Son was applauded as a breakthrough in TV, but Amos & Andy was condemned and finally taken off the air. Go figure.
Like that so-called racism that resulted in the lynchings of blacks and the jews that went to the south to help them? Or the so-called racism that profiles non-whites as "suspects" ? Or the so-called racism that did not allow blacks to gain full employment or vote for their representation?
Btw... there are shows like this, whites just don't care anymore... The Parkers was on TV for quite a while (although, the Parkers was less positive than this show, honestly)
It's the "I Love Lucy" of black comedy! The cast was a very talented group of actors that did their job with skill and professionalism that any person or group should be proud of. Thank god that this show lives on. By taking this show off the airwaves it surely deprived these people of the accolades they deserved! Shame on the small minded percentage of the population that perceived racism in a purely genius work of comedy. Through humor they showed we're all god's children. They got ROBBED!
I was arguing with my friend (who's Caucasian) about Amos & Andy being a racist show. Now I have to admit, I have never seen an episode of Amos & Andy until my friend sent me the link to this site. And to be honest, so far in this clip, I don't see anything racist about it.
*I'll let you know after watching the other parts of this episode...gotta run to the supermarket now ;-)
which are bought an paid 4 from white men 2 b shown an broadcasted 2 make us black people an other races think of our selfs as infeior an others 2 think the same way, just like this show did,all propaganda
This is a comedy show. If you think this is racism then you my be a racist. The show is great. Not making fun of anybody. These people are actors. Get off the racism thing. Give it a break.
this show was out when racism an stereotyping was alive an well an was apart of the american culture at one time, notice I said at one time.because I pointed out a troubled american past an even some of the stuff that still goes on even now 2 day,im racist??U will never see Andy Griffin or Leave it 2 Beaver episodes when there at the bank with no money or N the unemployment line, those show never touch on real struggle an or made jokes about it
There were plenty of Andy Griffith shows where characters were lazy or were stupid. And funny you mention Andy Griffith. They played up to the "Stupid southerner" stereotype. Remember Gomer and Goober Pyle? Otis the drunk? All of Andy's ditzy girlfriends? They stereotyped too. Besides, a comedy by nature makes people appear foolish and ridiculous. It's a comedy for heaven's sake. No racism here, just good comedy. Don't let the hyper PC crowd play heall with ya. ;-)
I havent seen this since the 1950's and still think that it is brilliant comedy. The show presented positive images of black people to a white audience, many of whom had little or no contact with African Americans as society was still segregated at that time. As one of the previous posts mentions, there were many characters who were professional and articulate. The Kingfish character wasnt a buffoon, he was a clever and smooth-talking con man whose schemes unfortunately usually backfired.
What about Jimmie "J.J." Walker, one of black TV's worst offenders? A 4th rate actor and comedian at best, Walker was Stepin Fetchit and Willie Best reincarnate. His saucer-eyed mugging and rubber-legged gait only served as a backdrop to the fact that "J.J." was functionally illiterate and sporadically employed in menial jobs. The show's saving grace was the dignified work of Esther Rolle & John Amos. After their departure, the show, sadly, became "Coon Times." (Anyone seen Ben Powers lately?)
One of the things that you haveto understand about stereotypes is that part of the trick is to make you think that somethings wrong were there is nthng wrong. Like having full lips for example. Remember that movie with Denzel where racist white guy called him a Ethiopian and Dnzl replied(paraphrazing a bit) Your stupid enough to think you offended me.
I'm a African American and I tell you, Ive seen modern movies with with far worst sterotypes and racial derogatory subliminal messaging. First of all , these shows like Goodtimes, are comedys, you need a clown or baffoon element. JJ wasnt bad, he showed prsality and class , he stuck to and won with his dreams, and was a ladies man
2ndly there are blacks derived from the south that do sort of talk like this(even in my family). Its not degrading because they hav e an accent or dialect.
Now, about "J.J." First, why do you think Esther Rolle complained to Ebony magazine about the "J.J." character in 1975 and eventually left the show briefly? She came back in 1978 after Walker's character had been modified somewhat. Was it a coincidence he wore the same foppish Stepin Fetchit hat? Walker running around yelling, "Kid-uh...Dyno-MIIITE!!!!" was amusing at best. A ladies man? "J.J."? Please! He looked like a mule eating peanut butter. Secondly, a southern accent is totally beautiful!
First, white buffoonery on TV has been historically less egregious than black buffoonery. We've seen whites--foppish, foolish whites--on corny TV sitcoms. Yet, you can turn the channels and quickly find other positive facets of white life. For us, we were handed only one card to display since 1912. Since then, our portrayals haven't come close to balancing out yet. And yes, most of the reasoning for the stereotyping stems from insecurity and ignorance. We're beloved as long as we dance and sing!
22aeris: I love "Cops" as well! I live for it. I love the fact that they show lowlifes of all races. You can find drunken, slack-jawed, two-teeth dolts of all colors arguing, spitting, cursing and judo-kicking at one another in the street at 1:30 in the morning in Anytown, U.S.A. God bless "Cops"!
Your points are very well taken, MROSEN62. I must admit, I watched the "Kingfish Slips Up" episode here and I couldn't stop laughing. I did take note that the supporting characters in the episode were professional and articulate. The only bufoon, really, was Kingfish. And yes, why was "Sanford & Son" not coonish? Fred Sanford was conniving, bigoted and manipulative. And poor, infantilized Lamont. And shall we include Esther, Grady, Bubba, and Leroy & Skillet? Yet, Redd Foxx was a comic genius!
We all must remember that this is a comedy show. Comedic characters are not Einsteins. I remember A&A when it first ran and never thought it was racist with the exception of the Lightnin' character. Tim Moore's scheming but loveable Kingfish is one of the great sitcom characters of all time. What is overlooked is that A&A was the first show to portray blacks as professionals (in minor roles, but they were present nonetheless). Why was A&A racist but not Sanford & Son?
White producers can afford to make successful shows with slack-jawed, two-teeth, George Bush-looking hicks on shows like "The Beverly Hillbillies," "Hee Haw" or "Cops" because whites are shown in a variety of genres all over TV. We are mainly shown as jive-talkin', pop-lockin', eye-buggin', bling-wearin' clowns with either a mic in one hand or a McNugget in the other. We are loved only for our "natchel" rhythm, our ability to run with a ball. Anything other than what whites expect confuses them.
This shameful exploitation of these cooning, behind-scratchin' black actors without any dignity or pride has been going on since "Birth of a Nation." This minstrelsy crap is another reminder of whites expect from black actors. Oh! And in case we think the cooning stopped at "Amos 'n' Andy" in 1953, we can fast forward to 2008 with "Tyler Perry's House of Payne." Yet, black director Oscar Micheaux, who tried to show blacks as intelligent humans in his films can't even get a mention today. Damn...
I'm glad you mentioned Oscar Micheaux. I thought I was the only one that heard him. I saw a movie SWING! on TCM. I saw the most articulate black actress Dorothy Van Engle who is forgotten. She was not loud,**itchy acting or anything. And Agree Tyler Perry is worse than Amos and Andy to me because these were the first black actors in a series. Here is a black man that can do more but this is modern day cooning
I really appreciate the insight. I must check out that Micheaux movie. There were so many unsung black actors/actresses who never got the play they deserved-only because they didn't stoop or bend over. White America will allow the Tyler Perrys of the world to pimp our own people as long as they can share in the profits. And a particular shame-on-you to Allen Payne. He is a good actor who has been in some really good stuff in the past--now he's become sold brotha #1.
If this was degrading to the black race, then "The Beverly Hillbillys" was degrading to white - NOT! We laughed at The Beverly Hillbilly's reruns for over 30 years now. The actors have reaped big money in royalties and became part of America's culture. These wonderful actors on Amos & Andy were denied all that. It's a terrible thing that this was done to them. Shameful.
A number of the plots used on Amos and Andy were later used on Leave it to Beaver because the producers (Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher) produced both shows!
is this racist?

Amos and Andy overall was well written and the actors were ever so funny BUT the Kingfish as much as i loved him always tried to cheat a good friend Andy and had no redeeming qualities which left a negative moral feeling about the show
mikebgoode005 4 months ago
I loved this show as a small boy - one of the first shows I can ever remember watching. Tim Moore was my hero. The Kingfish was so cool. Strange how the NAACP jumped all over Amos and Andy and got it taken off the air. Nobody complained about Laurel and Hardy being anti-white, or Jackie Gleason and Art Carney being racists. The Three Stooges were Jewish and no Jews tried to get them banned.

If you arent taught you cant learn... proven fucking fact

michaelaaronmahoney 10 months ago
@michaelaaronmahoney You're a white guy who is reading way too much into Amos and Andy. These characters are portrayed with no more derision than many, many white TV characters of the era. For God's sake, look at the white characters in Mayberry County. A little lesson in comedy- caricatured portrayals are funny.
nealkassanoff 9 months ago
@nealkassanoff Im glad you didnt go and call me a cunt like poopstain up top lol... but I can see where youre coming from but the issue I have with the show is not really the show but the media of the era... all black people were portrayed as ignorant, lazy, hungry bafoons that the society called Niggers... There were plenty of well respected white people portrayed in film but how many well respected black people in media before Sidney Poitier hit the scene???
michaelaaronmahoney 9 months ago
@michaelaaronmahoney Frankly, I don't know enough about Amos and Andy to come out swinging. What I can tell you is that when I bothered to actually look at any of the episodes, I didn't find the negative racist stereotypes that I was expecting via the oft repeated reputation of the show. As far as Poitier goes, I am far more offended by the patronizing idealized portrayal in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner than anything I've seen on an Amos and Andy episode.
nealkassanoff 9 months ago
@nealkassanoff how so?? the end of the movie was beautiful... I mean the father came to grips that he is a decent guy!!! and watch Heat of the Night for a better look at the type of people Sidney played... Like I said its not like they (media) only had one show of an ignorant black person(s) its every black person in media at the time!!! They were either good for nothings or some wise cracking nanny or some other form of "help"
michaelaaronmahoney 9 months ago
@michaelaaronmahoney Whatever dude. I'm looking at this episode of Amos and Andy and I see some silly characters who happen to be black, not racist portrayals. I've seen Guess Who's... and its a piece of shit film with a central character so idealized as to be utterly uninteresting. I don't want Hollywood righting any wrongs by patronizing me as a viewer with such obvious "racism-is-bad" cliches.
nealkassanoff 9 months ago
@nealkassanoff also they black faced the already black actors lmao... I will say that some of the criticism on this particular series is heavy at times but if I was a black person of the era I would be kind of pissed that the only blacks I see on tv are moronic and downright ignorant... this has nothing to do with me feeling a sense of guilt because Im of heavy Irish decent... we had our rough patch in American Hi*STORY* also... But I wont complain because we got our freedom rather fast
michaelaaronmahoney 9 months ago
@michaelaaronmahoney I think we need to be more aware of how racial tensions are amplified and exploited by a ruling elite to divide us and our common interests rather than worry about how much black face make up was used for the Amos and Andy Show. I am not trying to be contentious. I'm just offering that for consideration. A rather broad tangent, but worth considering nonetheless.
nealkassanoff 9 months ago
@nealkassanoff on Facebook I made a list comparing the black "thug" to that of the white "rednek" and the comparisons are staggering. They share so many common interests without even realizing it! As kids we were taught intolerance.less my generation than the generations before me though but I was raised in the South and still a lot of hatred. It truly shows how the educational system and parents have failed the future of this nation.although the Nation was built on the principles they were taught

Well the NAACP black listed Hattie McDaniels also. They almost destroyed her career; the poor woman making a honest living and a great actor who in real life lived with pride and dignity.

I might recommend a movie that will suit your 'anger towards Whitey mood'...The Pursuit of Happyness.
drumwraith 2 years ago 2
lol i have seen pursuit of happyness plenty of times. it's a very good movie, but i dont know what it has to do with your comment saying that black people are unaccomplished people. and yes you are right black people are racist just like white people are racist. look i'm a very educated person who reads alot. and i think that is the problem with not only with the young black race but other races as well. we dont take the time to learn from our previous generations mistakes.
naml1984 2 years ago
i think it's time out for all of this black vs black, black vs white drama. if we took the time out and actually observed one another we would see that we have alot in common and that we are fighting over stupid things. i believe love will conquer hate. and i hope that we will get it right one day before it's too late. your welcome to talk me anytime.
naml1984 2 years ago
Thanks for the dignified reply...But, I never said anything about Black people being "unaccomplished people". Only that modern racism is totally different than the old true racism that used to affect black lives so drastically. And that so many modern Blacks are doing their best to keep that dying racism alive: Wanting the world to stop turning as punishment for the wounds their Ancestors suffered. Black people ARE VERY capable of accomplishment.....just too mad at "Whitey" to move on sometimes
drumwraith 2 years ago
@naml1984 "black people are racist just like white people are racist" the difference is that our so called "racism" holds no power or institution. If it was fair in the beginning there would not be any black "racism" or imo resentment.

mojomars 2 years ago 2
The reason that the NAACP protested this show was that it was the only example of blacks on TV at the time. Black people wanted more positive images to be shown. Whites were shown as heroes as well as buffoons. All the same, the actors on this show were outstanding and the show was a great example of ensemble acting! Spencer Williams, who played Andy, was an independent filmmaker and was the Spike Lee of the 1940s, and Tim Moore, who played Kingfish, was a brilliant comic actor.
soulgriot 2 years ago 3
This show was an exaggeration like all TV, but in a lot of ways it was accurate as hell, too. Being a musician, I've hung out with lots of Black guys who truly act about like Kingfish and his buddies. Why is it that every time someone tries to portray ONE SMALL group of Blacks for what they are...a bunch of uptight assholes get offended and suggests they're claiming ALL BLACKS are EXACTLY like this or that? What's the matter with you guys? Who are you really pissed at? Be yourselves, have fun
drumwraith 2 years ago 3

There's plenty of stuff today that is more stereotypical than this, ie. the Chris Tuckers, Mike Ebbs, and Flavor Flavs of this world.

Absolute comedic genius. Why should sitcom humor be limited to a majority of white actors whose characters portray complete buffoons?
Stephanjnj 2 years ago 3
Awesome! I love Tyler Perry's stuff. Is this the new trailer for "Colored Folk Done Say the Darndest Things?"

These guys are the best. By contrast P. Diddy is insulting and a damned buffoon.

This is a comedy show. If you think this is racism then you my be a racist. The show is great. Not making fun of anybody. These people are actors. Get off the racism thing. Give it a break.

this show was out when racism an stereotyping was alive an well an was apart of the american culture at one time, notice I said at one time.because I pointed out a troubled american past an even some of the stuff that still goes on even now 2 day,im racist??U will never see Andy Griffin or Leave it 2 Beaver episodes when there at the bank with no money or N the unemployment line, those show never touch on real struggle an or made jokes about it
Knowledge088 2 years ago
There were plenty of Andy Griffith shows where characters were lazy or were stupid. And funny you mention Andy Griffith. They played up to the "Stupid southerner" stereotype. Remember Gomer and Goober Pyle? Otis the drunk? All of Andy's ditzy girlfriends? They stereotyped too. Besides, a comedy by nature makes people appear foolish and ridiculous. It's a comedy for heaven's sake. No racism here, just good comedy. Don't let the hyper PC crowd play heall with ya. ;-)

@voodoo1957 well im black. i think this may ahve helped decrease stereotypes for blacks. whites realize that were human

Let us all agree that the Amos and Andy Shows live in our hearts. They were all brilliant actors and we miss them dearly.....
JetfireK 3 years ago
I havent seen this since the 1950's and still think that it is brilliant comedy. The show presented positive images of black people to a white audience, many of whom had little or no contact with African Americans as society was still segregated at that time. As one of the previous posts mentions, there were many characters who were professional and articulate. The Kingfish character wasnt a buffoon, he was a clever and smooth-talking con man whose schemes unfortunately usually backfired.

my 71 year old father loves this show. I for one am not offended by it. I think it funny as hell. Thanks for posting.

After their departure, the show, sadly, became "Coon Times." (Anyone seen Ben Powers lately?)
hmsheppard 3 years ago

Its not degrading because they hav e an accent or dialect.
shariefwat 3 years ago
Now, about "J.J." First, why do you think Esther Rolle complained to Ebony magazine about the "J.J." character in 1975 and eventually left the show briefly? She came back in 1978 after Walker's character had been modified somewhat. Was it a coincidence he wore the same foppish Stepin Fetchit hat? Walker running around yelling, "Kid-uh...Dyno-MIIITE!!!!" was amusing at best. A ladies man? "J.J."? Please! He looked like a mule eating peanut butter. Secondly, a southern accent is totally beautiful!
hmsheppard 3 years ago
First, white buffoonery on TV has been historically less egregious than black buffoonery. We've seen whites--foppish, foolish whites--on corny TV sitcoms. Yet, you can turn the channels and quickly find other positive facets of white life. For us, we were handed only one card to display since 1912. Since then, our portrayals haven't come close to balancing out yet. And yes, most of the reasoning for the stereotyping stems from insecurity and ignorance. We're beloved as long as we dance and sing!

Your right and I love the "COPS" show as well.
22aeris 2 years ago
22aeris: I love "Cops" as well! I live for it. I love the fact that they show lowlifes of all races. You can find drunken, slack-jawed, two-teeth dolts of all colors arguing, spitting, cursing and judo-kicking at one another in the street at 1:30 in the morning in Anytown, U.S.A. God bless "Cops"!
hmsheppard 2 years ago
Your points are very well taken, MROSEN62. I must admit, I watched the "Kingfish Slips Up" episode here and I couldn't stop laughing. I did take note that the supporting characters in the episode were professional and articulate. The only bufoon, really, was Kingfish. And yes, why was "Sanford & Son" not coonish? Fred Sanford was conniving, bigoted and manipulative. And poor, infantilized Lamont. And shall we include Esther, Grady, Bubba, and Leroy & Skillet? Yet, Redd Foxx was a comic genius!
hmsheppard 3 years ago
We all must remember that this is a comedy show. Comedic characters are not Einsteins. I remember A&A when it first ran and never thought it was racist with the exception of the Lightnin' character. Tim Moore's scheming but loveable Kingfish is one of the great sitcom characters of all time. What is overlooked is that A&A was the first show to portray blacks as professionals (in minor roles, but they were present nonetheless). Why was A&A racist but not Sanford & Son?
MROSEN62 3 years ago
White producers can afford to make successful shows with slack-jawed, two-teeth, George Bush-looking hicks on shows like "The Beverly Hillbillies," "Hee Haw" or "Cops" because whites are shown in a variety of genres all over TV. We are mainly shown as jive-talkin', pop-lockin', eye-buggin', bling-wearin' clowns with either a mic in one hand or a McNugget in the other. We are loved only for our "natchel" rhythm, our ability to run with a ball. Anything other than what whites expect confuses them.
hmsheppard 3 years ago
This shameful exploitation of these cooning, behind-scratchin' black actors without any dignity or pride has been going on since "Birth of a Nation." This minstrelsy crap is another reminder of whites expect from black actors. Oh! And in case we think the cooning stopped at "Amos 'n' Andy" in 1953, we can fast forward to 2008 with "Tyler Perry's House of Payne." Yet, black director Oscar Micheaux, who tried to show blacks as intelligent humans in his films can't even get a mention today. Damn...
hmsheppard 3 years ago
I'm glad you mentioned Oscar Micheaux. I thought I was the only one that heard him. I saw a movie SWING! on TCM. I saw the most articulate black actress Dorothy Van Engle who is forgotten. She was not loud,**itchy acting or anything. And Agree Tyler Perry is worse than Amos and Andy to me because these were the first black actors in a series. Here is a black man that can do more but this is modern day cooning
YourAuntEsther 3 years ago
I really appreciate the insight. I must check out that Micheaux movie. There were so many unsung black actors/actresses who never got the play they deserved-only because they didn't stoop or bend over. White America will allow the Tyler Perrys of the world to pimp our own people as long as they can share in the profits. And a particular shame-on-you to Allen Payne. He is a good actor who has been in some really good stuff in the past--now he's become sold brotha #1.
Signed,
Your Uncle Woody!

Well...to each his own. I think they were wonderful talented actors and their talent should not have been buried.
