OK, this video makes Holland look like we are all Dutch and all about the one week festival in May. Not something I'd like to show people if I wanted to brag about my hometown.
The past 17 years of my life in this town have made me who I am today.
Morning visits to downtown, maybe meeting up with some friends for coffee, or just taking in the positive atmosphere, hot days spent on the pier with friends then getting ice cream at the General Store, and cool evenings spent watching the sun go down as you walk along the beach. There's no place like home, there's no place like Holland.
I think it's the most beautiful town ever. Life is very peaceful here, except having to walk through 3 ft. of snow... still is worth it for spring and summer time!
YO! I diffently wana move now. My cousin lives there just talked to him a few minutes ago I been living in California most my life and I can't stand it anymore the taxes, gas price, cost of living, bad air quality, too many gangs, and the unemployment is sky rocketing here.
Anyone wana give me advice before I make my decision?
@MisterRobespierre YO,yo, yo, watcha mean, know what i'm sayin'? Fosho I gots the green cheese all day.
Well, hello. How are you doing today white person? =)
I am absolutely appalled by your comment. Well, excccccccccccuuusssseeeee me. That's how you want me to talk? Trust me I got the best of both world baby. That's why Imma get me a cute little white girl make some cute little mixed babies and pretty soon there will be no more whites, hahaha (demonic laugh).
Why do all american people think dutch people are farmers and stuff with live in a small country with many people so there arent much farms and we dont dress like that just WTF
@hoihoihoihoihoi5x Hmm, really bad English grammar again! It's "with many people, so there aren't many farms" and we don't dress like that. Just WTF? What an absolute moron you are!
I have to say being a Holland, Michigan native, Michigan as a whole doesn't get enough credit for its beauty. People think it's some washed up good for nothing state but it is one of the most beautiful places I've been in and had the pleasure of living in. Yes a lot of us are dutch but so what? It was a dutch settlig ground, I'm sorry that another nationality wasn't there to claim it first. Your loss.
We've lived here for the past six months and have fallen in love with Holland, Michigan! And that was through the winter months! You won't be disappointed when you come for a visit, no matter what time of year.
As an Irish Jew, born and raised in Holland Michigan, I must point out, possibly the obvious, that we are NOT all Dutch, and that is NOT what the entire town is about. For a week in the spring, locals hide in their homes from the tourists and tulip festivities, and yes, look through the phone book and you will not believe your eyes when you get the the section of last names that start with, "Van." Although beyond that, it isn't that dutch...
Holland Michigan isn't ruined by 50 years of left-liberal policies. We are trying to learn from the past and fix those mistakes we have made. Unfortunately for some people it to late, as they have turned into complete morons already(Petj3pet). He's actually proud that Holland has turned into one big dump.
Well, I might be a moron, but I'm just glad every coffeeshop-owner here has to follow rules (instead of dealers who will sell you toxicated trash they call drugs), or that our prostitutes get paid well and are their own boss (instead of 'slaves' of pimps) and that we thought from young age how to drink alcohol (instead of secretely playing shot-games with friends).
We might be/have morons, but Americans have them to. Only they keep them in underground circuits and don't notice them...
Of Switserland vanwege hun bancaire. Of Frankrijk vanwege hun wijn en cuisine. Of italië en hun sportwagens. Wat hebben wij? Juist...
I am an american but married to a dutch man and my children are all american and dutch citizens. My twin sons were born in the Netherlands. To the Flying Dutchman, yes my husband speaks native dutch, he should since he lived there for 30 years. And to calywa, the others are right, there are no coffeeshops in Holland, Michigan, and if you ever go to the Netherlands, ask for a cafe not a coffeeshop! They sell marijuana in coffeeshops.
Cool, they even have dunes at the beach! And they are celebrating Sinterklaas :P. And a field with tulips :) As a Dutchman I think I will feel like home there. There's only one very important thing missing... No coffeeshops?? I can't live without my weekly joint :P and I think it's very cool to see they actually wear dutch clothes, while people living in the Netherlands don't wear them (and yes, we don't walk on wooden shoes anymore :P)
@Petj3pet I live in holland. There are plenty of coffee shops. Lemonjello's is the best and they are right downtown on 9th street. Downtown also has JP's, Alpenrose, the Good Earth (Though their coffee sucks), and we have about 5 starbucks outside of the downtown, plus other coffee shops. There is definitely no shortage of coffee in holland, mi
@calywa Dear calywa, its nice to hear that there is plenty of coffe in holland, mi. Here in the Netherlands is a Coffeeshop a place where you can buy and smoke weed, hasj, spacecake, etc. I dont think they have those kind of coffeeshop in Holland, mi xD
@Petj3pet haha, funny, the difference between a Dutch and American coffeeshop. I actually lived in Michigan for a year and joined in a parade during tulip time, wearing a "Dutch" costume from my host family. It was great fun, but a bit weird to partake in it as a Dutch person. It was also fun because you could get Erwtensoep en other Dutch foods there, but they all tasted a bit different though!
@Petj3pet Yeah pot's illegal over here :(... we have coffee shops that sell coffee and only coffee though, lol. We wear dutch clothing during tulip time when the tulips are in full bloom. It's a tribute to our ancestors from the Netherlands... Also is it true that putting your trash can under the sink and putting potatoes in a wood box a dutch thing? My family does that and was curious if it was true.
@ichbinstark Thinking about the fact that my mom also has a box with potatoes and a trashcan under the sink, you may be right! Many friends of mine also has the trashcan under the sink. Maybe it creates space in the kitchen? Did you know dutch stairs (or common european stairs) are way more steep than the american ones? The reason is that large stairs will waste more precious room in already the small houses we live in.
@Petj3pet By the way, I thought that weed is already legal in the US. It's pretty strange to see that we, known as left-winged, can do softdrugs, allow gaymarriage, can legally drink when you're 16 years old, can go visit a prostitute and many more. While americans, who are right-winged, are not allowed to deal with such privileges. I always thought that America is the land of freedom where you can break or build your live by making individual decisions and chances.
hahaha that's so funny! I'm Dutch, I was born in The Netherlands and it's so cool to see this. you even celebrate 'sinterklaas' how cool is that!
i really wanna go there some time. are there any people over there who can speak dutch?
@TheFlyingDutchman111 Yes when I was in MIchigan in 2007/2008 some of the people I met with still spoke Dutch, in particular the older people. It is fun to go there and see all the Dutch names on buildings!
i was born and raised in holland also but i grew up on 18th and clumbia and i live in PA now but every day i think about moveing back home i love Holland theres no other place like it
